Heather - this is the second go around for Xena - it has to be causing damage and stress to her system. It does not sound good and it sounds as though she has a problem that is not going to go away. At this point I would be examining my options and deciding if my choice was one of selfishness or selflessness - simply, that means keeping her alive because I did not want to let her go. You said your vet had already suggested a course of action that you were not happy about - suck it in girl - who do you care most about at this point?
