Rambo V - Sylvester Stallone

I saw the movie yesterday and allthough it was a great hardcore action movie I had some issues with the movie.

I felt the movie was rushed. You get the feeling that some scenes were missing. For example, Rambo and the bad guys are travelling to places in a blink of an eye without further explanation how they know where to be exactly. So the plot is very very thin. Every scene comes straight to the core. It would be nice if every scene and dialogue would have more breathing space. I hope you guys understand what I mean.

Also it doesn't feel like a Rambo movie. This one doesn't have the tone or the feeling of the other Rambo movies.

I also didn't like the opening sequence. Felt a little bit out of place.

So that was the negative part......

BUT, off course it's about the action. And the action is very hardcore (maybe the last kill was a little bit over-the-top).
Also Sly acted great as John Rambo. I also liked the supporting cast. Yvette Monreal did a great job playing Danielle. Very emotional.
The bad guys are also real a**holes and you can't wait till Rambo kills them. As I mentioned before, I wish there was more time for the bad guys to breath in their role.

For me it's a 7/10

How would you rank it with the other movies in the series?

Yes enjoyed it too, as you say didn't really feel too much like a normal Rambo movie except for the last 15 minutes.

As for rating it against the other 4, i would say it would probably be the worst of the lot, maybe about the same quality as Rambo III.

Notice on ManlyMovies comment section that there was a longer cut of the movie in other places such as Australia including the beginning!!

That is correct. There are 2 different cuts! In the UK and the US there are some scenes missing, for example the opening sequence where Rambo is saving people from a flood.
Luckily I got to see the extended version.

I don't know exactly where to rank it. I think rank 4 or 5. Going to see it again tomorrow.

Just got back from the cinema, and I really enjoyed it. Some real gruesome stuff near the end....but not as effective as the carnage in Rambo (2008)

But....

As others have remarked, it doesn't feel like a 'Rambo' movie (and I don't just mean the tonal or geographic shift, either) Stallone (for all intents and purposes) plays it like an R-Rated 'Rocky' movie (in terms of character, dialogue and demeanour) Rambo is (usually) monosymbolic in these movies (likely due to being either shell-shocked from his war experiences, uneducated or just plain unfriendly) But here, his speech pattern (and delivery) are just too upbeat and wordy in the first half (and it's hard to believe that his medication for PTSD would alter him that drastically?)

Secondly, when Rambo first went to Mexico....he exhibited no-signs of the 'Tactical-Stealth-Like-Reconnaissance-Expert' traits, that the previous four movies had established. And despite being clearly outnumbered on the rooftop (by around 30-1) he made zero effort in defending himself once the fists started raining down (to be fair, this is probably a more realistic scenario....but very out-of-character for a 'Rambo' movie?) It set the scene for the revenge that was to follow, but seemed odd that he just handed himself on a plate like that in the first place?

As I said, as an actual standalone movie, it was great, and none of the aforementioned 'problems' I had with the character, would even exist, if this wasn't a Rambo movie. But as it stands, 'Last Blood' is a worthy 'Stallone' flick.....but a totally misplaced entry in the Rambo franchise.

Yeah I thought that wa s odd also...letting himself be seen in the first place..
that and it only took 4 days to recover from that massive beat down.

Did your version have the flood rescue opening scenes?

Nah, they'll likely be saving that for the inevitable 'Director's Cut' release (somewhere down the line?) :)

Having said that, 'Rambo - Directors Cut' (2008) is still unavailable to buy in the UK (I had to get mine imported from the states)

Thanks for the heads up about an extended 'John Rambo'(Rambo IV)...I didn't know about that...I see it added 9mts.
on Amazon it comes in a pack with the theatrical version

Although, beware as the 'Extended' version actually trims some of the gore from the theatrical version

I saw the extended version with the rescue mission at the beginning. Please be mindful that this comment may contain potential spoilers.

Overall, the film was pleasing in its own right - the action was effective, focusing more on stealth rather than theatrics hence suited to Stallone's age. Some of the dialog was also quite moving.

There were only two aspects which were a little disappointing.

Firstly, as others have pointed out, Rambo's dialog occasionally felt a little too "animated", almost like Stallone was channeling Rocky. Somehow, the character - particularly in the first half of the movie - didn't have that weariness about him. I appreciate that the medication sequences would have addressed that change, but the compromise was that it felt like a different character.

The other issue is that the film at times felt rushed transitioning from one setting to the next. The ending in particular was really affected by this - physically, the story couldn't go much further without destroying the ambiguity (in my opinion), however it felt quite rushed and I'm not sure how well it serves as the end of the franchise, if this is in fact the last film.
