Hi everybody

I'm Marjorie from Belgium, I'm 25 years old and happy to join ya on this forum.
I like Steven Seagal (of course) and I lika martial arts. I practiced judo for a long time i also practiced karate and self defense. Now i'm gonna start Aikido 'cos the philosophy of the other sports I've done has changed too much. People just want to make competitions and the sport has lost a lot of its charm.
Well, I'm sorry if my English is not too good. I hope it doesn't matter.
For my part I'm happy to be a new member .
If ya have questions don't hesitate.

Hello, Pantera. :) Welcome to the forum!

You're English is quite fine. Don't worry--we have lots of members from all over the world and we all seem to communicate very well. :)

Be sure to look around the forum-there is a lot of information contained here about Steven Seagal, so you've found the best place on the internet if you're a fan, as we are. You may be especially interested in the martial arts section. Enjoy yourself! :)

Welcome. I was also considering taking up Aikido. Is 23 too old? Wish i had started younger. Was trained in Tae Kwon Do before.

Seagal started at a very young age...

I've got the same feeling.

I started judo younk but I'm not black belt and I'll never have it 'cos' in Belgium to be allowed to present the exam of black belt, y& must win a lot of points in big competitions. But with my big knee operation, it won't be possible. Before this operation, i was working a lot to be able to be black belt.
Four trainings a week, working only with black belt guys. Now it's over; but ya really start learning a martial art when ya have reached out the black belt.
So after having studies all the possibilities, alll the different martial arts, I decided to start aikido 'cos' there's no competition and if I work good and hard and if I have the knowledges i'll be able maybe to be black belt and to o farther. i talked with a guy of the Belgian aikido federation and he told me that in a lot of aikido clubs, they have now people coming from karate clubs and judo clubs who don't want to be operated again or injuried again 'cos' of this competition philosophy which creates an egoistic way to act.

So aikido from your perspective is a less competitive sport and safer i guess... and im glad to hear that. Then main reason why i wish to train in aikido is to build more self confidence and master an effective art of self-defence not to compete and not to break peoples limbs haha. But what is the average age group of the folks over at the aikido club you train in ?

I don't know yet 'cos' I've just stopped practicing judo 2 years ago. During this two yaers I've moved up a lot then it was impossible to know where to go to do sport. Now I've stabilised my life: got a good job and I'm gonna move up again for the last time. then i cheked on the net to see all the clubs of Brussels where I could go (I mean depending on the location, the schedule and so on). One club looks to interest me a lot. But as the new season is just about to begin, i've to wait. First i'll go to check the lessons, see how the teachers do, see who go there and so on and see if i've got a good feeling by going there. I don't wanna rush and be desapointed by the club. Until now I did everything not to be desapointed: I've chosen a club of the official Belgian aikido federation which is the only federation which has relations with the aikido federation of Tokyo. Tokyo just recognizes one federation by martial arts and by contry so... The club I've chosen is Chu Shin Aiki Dojo.
Of course if someone else from belgium and practicing aikido can give me some advises, it will be great.
But as ya i need to have backmy self confidence. since i've been operated i've lost a lot of it. I feel a little bit beter since i've my university diploma and since i've got my job. But for my physical aspect, my physical strenght that's different. i wanna have them back! Don't think that because Aikido seems a little bit more"peaceful" than other martial arts, is not physicaly difficult! It's wha a guy of the Belgian federation told me. I guess he's right. As soon as I start I let ya know.
Normally ya should find people from all age in clubs then don't worry.
The most important is having a good feeling with the peole going to the club and with the teatchers.

Aikido is safe if executed properly...

From the articles I've read on Seagal ... they all say that it is hard to breakfall well for him... When it comes to those throws, it can get not as that safe... (physically, you must control your momentum...). Aikido isn't about you using your muscles to succeed... Although, it is a very powerful martial art. I'd love to study it one day...
