Belly Of The Beast

This is Steven Seagal's latest motion picture. This movie is released on region 1 dvd on 31st December 2003 and region 2 dvd on 16th February 2003. This thread contains important information on the release.

Budget: $14 million

Location: Bangkok, Thailand

Plot: Ex-CIA Agent JAKE HOPPER has run a successful private security business since leaving the agency when his wife died, leaving him alone with daughter, JESSICA.

While hiking in Thailand, Jessica and her friend SARAH are kidnapped by an organization that calls itself the ABU KARAF. Sarah is a US Senator's daughter. For ransom the Abu Karaf demand the release of 20 prisoners from American custody. The US Secretary of State urges restraint - he won't negotiate. An ex-colleague of Jake's recognizes Jessica on the ransom tape and tips him off. Jake knows he must rescue the girls himself.

An old CIA buddy puts Jake in contact with 'LEON WASHINGTON' an active CIA agent working in Thailand. Jake goes to Bangkok and escapes an assassination attempt by unknown forces. Leon arranges a meeting with SOKU Ð the internal security chief for JANTAPAN. Jantapan is an eccentric and scary character, a rebel military general that is making a play to be one of the most powerful men in Thailand. Secretly Jantapan is messing with some dangerous spiritual forces.

Soku provides Jake with a cover story, but the CIA wants Jake out of it - they are planning to take out the Abu Karaf with the aid of the Thai army and don't want a civilian in the middle.

Jake is a spiritual man so he contacts his spiritual master PAITOON. As Jake is in trouble, Paitoon offers to arrange a divination from the oracle of the order.

Jake enlists the help of his old friend and partner SUNTI. Together they con LULU, the girlfriend of WU an arms dealer, to steal information leading to the Abu Karaf. Jake & Sunti follow the leads to a warehouse where they discover evidence of highly sophisticated weaponry. With the dangerous drug dealer Wu now after Lulu, Jake takes her under his wing.

Jake shares some of his info with Leon - still testing the waters. Can he trust the CIA agent? Another attempt is made on Jake's life - this time Jake is sure that Leon was involved. Finally, the Abu Karaf contact Jake to arrange a meeting - the pieces are coming together.

Jake gets his reading from the old oracle. The cryptic message confirm his fears - evil and demonic spiritual forces are working against him. Jantapan tries to send the spirit of an ancient warrior demon to kill Jake but the ceremony goes wrong and the spirit enters Jantapan himself giving him amazing physical and spiritual powers.

Jake and Sunti go to meet the leader of the Abu Karaf SUNGRIT - he confirms what Jake suspects - since 9/11 Jantapan has worked to corner the narcotics and arms market. It was Jantapan who kidnapped the girls, blaming the Abu Karaf so the army would wipe out his competition. Sungrit knows where the girls are and gives Jake plans and intelligence. They both need the girls alive. With more betrayal and action on the horizon, Jake must engage in a battle that will put both his physical and spiritual powers to the ultimate test as he takes on the demon Jantapan in a wild battle that can only end in death.

Zen,
sometimes people think the wrong thing about someone, or get the wrong impression about people, that's easy to do online, as you can't see them or their body language...
This includes impressions about Steven, too...
I am sure there are some people that think many things about him which are totally inaccurate...
They don't know him or you, so all I can say, is that is their problem, not yours....
It takes a while to get to know someone well...
To me you seem very nice, and I think you seem to really admire Steven, so what's there to redeem?

I found a statement in the Steven Seagal's doubles/stunts forum that states what I was trying to say a little better than I could say it earlier and caused some confusion.

The problem is, most people when they watch a Steven Seagal film, they want to see him do what he does best - his fighting. When stunt men take over, who wants to see a stunt man doing what Steven is known for? That's what's so disappointing.

Me, I love watching him fight. To me, he's simply poetry in motion. The words "elegant" and "punching the guy's lights out" are incongruous together, and yet, his method of dispatching the bad guys has a fluidity of movement and yes, elegance, that is all his own style and is what makes him such a joy to watch, compared to other 'action' movie stars.

That's basically what I meant to say earlier. No disrespect to Steven Seagal at all. Hope maybe this clarifies instead of getting me in more trouble on this issue. :) :apeace:

No trouble or confusion at all, ZenLateralus. :) You know, I happen to disagree about Steven's stunt doubles. I watch his movies for him and the storyline, and whether or not he does his own stunts means absolutely nothing to me.

However, I respect your opinion and the way you express it. You do not bad-mouth him nor put him down. Your admiration for Steven still is obvious, and I've enjoyed all your posts since you've been here. How boring it would be if we all agreed all the time--don't you agree? ;) :D

Thank you. I appreciate that. I do agree with you. I don't really care about the stunt doubles either. I'm gonna try to just drop the issue and not talk (write) about it anymore  . There are so many more important things to talk about Steven Seagal than the issues surrounding his doubles (like his music, martial arts, clothing, attitudes, philosophies, religious beliefs, etc.).

Why should we dwell on the fact that he uses them?
All the stars do...
No big deal...
Although, it's best if they make it as natural as they can, for the most impact...
And believe me, some of the things I thought were doubles, actually weren't, so
there is no minimizing that Steven is awesome...
He always was, and he always will be...:)

As long as things stay peachy and the conversation is intelligent and the info keeps coming in I'm sure to hang about.

Personally I hated Belly Of The Beast and I think it is one of Seagal's worst movie ever. Seeing all these stunt doubles, Seagal's weight and stupid animated fight scenese just sadness me.

But I still love Seagal. ;)

I agree, he was really awesome in it, particularly so...
But I really liked some of the bit or should I say supporting actors actresses in that one too, some seemed like such good hearted folks, of course some were total backstabbers like that fitch guy, so you just never know who you can really trust, not that a trustworthy friend wouldn't be very nice, it's something like Orin says, how do you know who you can trust...
Like I told Julie, I have no privacy at all, and I mean NONE...
Hey, didn't you say that you had a pet bird?
Maybe I am just getting that bird thing from the OOR movie, have you seen that one?
If you haven't you really should...
Boy, am I a chatterbox tonight or what, have not been myself lately, not at all, very odd...
But anyway, a warm welcome to this forum...

Even though there is a list of movies Seagal is in I don't care for

(ie: Out For A Kill, The Foreigner, Ticker, Executive Decision, Out Of Reach)

I do like Belly of the Beast. There are just a few things about it that make this movie quite a bit more enjoyable than the earlier mentioned. Sure, I can agree that this movie is not great (not really even comparrable to movies with Seagal in them that I have not mentioned) (not great- ie. doubles, silly martial arts, etc. ) but despite the problems it is nicely directed, the story is clear, execution nearly flawless, and I do care that Seagal gets his daughter back.

I don't know how anyone can not like it, I loved Belly of the Beast. With it's high-octane fights, great music, solid camerawork, slick Seagal one-liners and nekked Oriental chicks it's worth a hundred "Tickers" and a million "Out For a Kills".

I agree with all of the above, Steve!! :)
Except for the "nekked Oriental chicks". :D

I watched the movie finally. Honestly the moive was kinda soap-opera. But to see Seagal in the moive was a plus point. Felt that the director should not over exggerate the sound effects in the fights... looks kinda cheezy.

I think Seagal should team up with Luc Besson to create a real good action movie...

I agree he should team up with someone! He is definitely grasping for straws as it is .
