My Opinion On "Belly Of The Beast"

Quite liked this latest Seagal STV film and thought it was his best directed film since "Exit Wounds". He really threw himself into the action scenes and although there was a bit of fight doubling, he was doing things which I thought he was past doing ie: one or two fancy little kicks. The director of this film seemed to have more of an understanding of the action/martial arts genre and as a result there was less cheese on screen unlike what was provided by that other famous director - Michael Oblowitz! Although it was low budget he utilized it well and as a result the film looked less cheap than a lot of other Direct To Video movies.

Overall Good

Bad Film!!

I have no idea why so many like this film. The fight scenes are so silly, you basically could see Seagal's double, just stupid! The plot was very corny and Seagal looked terrible in this film. There is nothing good to say the only part I liked is when he told off the young thug in the club,"Whats the matter junior?" (Seagal)
"You calling me a junior asshole!" (Thug)
"You look like junior!" (Seagal)
"Who the **** you think you are!" (Thug)
"Listen why don't you go back to your own genetic puddle and go for a swim. Boy."

My rating: 2.5 out of 5 stars.

Belly of the Beast DVD

I have bought Belly of the Beast DVD a while ago. I bought it when it was on special, round about $12 US dollars. I thought the fighting scene was pretty cool. Lots of cool moves in there. But I think it uses a way too much special computer graphic effects. So some moves look ridiculously impossible. Such as Seagal give one guy a push and he flew 5 metres away. How would that be possible??? And there is no way that he jumped out of the train and shot about 9 bullets while airborn. That was a way too exaggerated. He probably fired more than 100 shots in that scene and only reloaded once?????? NO WAY!!!!!

One thing I really HATE about this film and I think it should have been deleted is the part where Steven Seagal gets in bed with that Thai chick. That's just a bunch of crap. It really ruins the movie badly. All Steven Seagal movie should not have any of those dumb sex scenes. It totally stuffs up a good action packed movie.

I often found very strange that Seagal doesn't have much bonus features in his movie DVD. There is only the usual trailers and that's it!!!! It should have extra features like deleted scenes, actors interview, bloopers etc. It would really make the DVD a lot more interesting to watch.

That's my thought for the day.

Incarnation complete
I like the name
sums it up when he has the voodoo showdown and how the character must be feelin
against all odds is a seagal character to either side with or get the hell outta the way.
The muay thai boss looked promising...

After watching it over again I changed my rating to 3 out of 5 stars.

Everything was cool except those obvious stunt doubles in the fights.

i bought the dvd the other day...when it first came out i hired it and watched it...and although there were a few dissapointing things in it watching it at first..i still liked the movie i loved the action. so after watching it again....i really enjoyed this movie i mean when you compare it to his other movies...out of reach..naming one.....this movie is great he didnt look that over weight at all in this movie he looked very fit doing a lot of funning and in the mall i think most of his fight scenes were his...sure if you look u can notice the stunt double....but its nothing like out of reach...that stunt double was shocking.. they hid the stunts face all the time so u really couldnt tell, i dont know jake's partneres name...but i know he played "ryu" in street fighter...with jean claude van damn...he's a pretty good actor i thought he did a great job....now the girls acting were pretty bad....his daughter and co....but apart from that i really enjoyed this movie...the movie looked very professionally done....i noticed a bit of dubbing but this dubber is a lot better then any of the other ppl that have dubbed his movies but not much dubbing...very good.... i havnt seen submerged yet but i do hope he has picked up his act for that movie.i personally liked all the action i thought it was great...sure maybe a bit over the top...but its nothing ...it was enjoyable and fun to watch...there even was a couple of aikido techniques in there
i rate it 8.2/10
a great movie for one of his latest..seeing how old he is getting

His name is Byron Mann, He also played in Catwomen *Very Bad Movie* as a Guard. I thought he did a good job in this movie, This is my favorite up-to-date DTV. I'm glad you liked it as much as I did.

Since this DVD is still available for puchase, it's time to move this discussion to PMs, guys. ;)
But that is nice of you, Hofmae. :D

First gotta say, HUGE Ching Siu-Tung fan, love his work on House Of Flying Daggers and Hero, so the fighting was really yhe only reason I originally checked this out. The acting was good and story wasn't half bad, the Thai location must have been a beautiful shoot. The action scene where freakin' awesome, typical of Sui-Tung's over the top style, just scope out his other movies like Naked Weapon or My Schoolmate, The Barbarian and you'll see what I'm talking about. Best fight by far where the timber yard fight with the dab tai swordsman and the finale against Tom Wu, love it. Oh and Byron Mann just plain rocks!

The change of location, and use of it, helps this film. It doesn't look as confined or as grey as the Eastern European-shot films. There's a real feel for the local colour.

The plot is not the most original on Earth, but what there is is handled in a clean, uncomplicated, straightforward fashion, and this helps to drive the film. The script is not bad, as it takes its opportunity to create reasonable characters. I was particularly impressed with Byron Mann, playing Seagal's sidekick. He has a nice character dynamic and one is genuinely upset when he buys it at the end of the film. The introduction of the magic reminded me a little of MARKED FOR DEATH, and I'm not sure it was necessary. The film was moving along nicely without it, and it had a "thrown-in" quality rather than coming from the story.

The director does a better job of hiding the stunt doubles for Steven, but also manages to showcase Steven's skills as well. Not particularly fond of people flying 20 feet through the air when hit, but I guess that's the style the director wanted to use.

The obvious dubbing of Steven by another actor in certain scenes is also rather off-putting. I'm not going to bitch about Steven's weight, but it is more noticeable here. Overall, despite some flaws, BELLY OF THE BEAST is easily better than Seagal's most recent outings.

CLEMENTINE is next.

Hard To Kill
I watched this again the other day and really enjoyed it. I thought the introduction of more mystical aspects was weird when I first saw it as I wasn't expecting it in a Seagal movie but I like it more on repeated viewings. It gave the fight at the end (which was excellent, good CGI work) something extra, taking it beyond a standard action movie fight into a genuine battle between Good and Evil.

The only thing I was uncomfortable with was the romance between Seagal's character and the girl from the nightclub. There was absolutely no chemistry between them and they were paired together with very little set up. If she was a more mature woman it wouldn't have bugged me as much but she looked way too young to be the main characters love interest.
