Coming to a pirate near to you..?

I read the piece on Steven Seagal filming his new movie in Thailand (Outlook, April 30). Here is the last sentence: ``Belly of the Beast will be released in the United States at Christmas and is scheduled to be screened in Thailand in early 2004.''

As a former film marketer for Paramount and Universal, and a member of the anti-piracy committee of the Motion Picture Association, I guarantee this movie will be released in Thailand long before early 2004, and more than likely before it even hits US screens.

... Filmed here, for better or worse

There are two views on the shooting of Hollywood movies in Thailand. One is that it will help the domestic movie industry, related services and the tourism business. The other is that it might give an impression of the country as somewhere very mysterious or filled with crime and gangsters, like those portrayed in The Beach.

My thanks to Steven Seagal for wanting to make a decent film. We await more movie-makers with the right appreciation who want to use Thailand as their setting.

They might prefer action movies because of the better profits. But they should also look at features, documentaries and dramas (based on novels) which would make Thais proud and show off our culture overseas.

By reading that ...I almost get the impression that BOTB is not supposed to be an "action" movie.......wonder what they mean by "decent" in Thailand?????????
