Half Past Dead Review

I watched Half Past Dead here in Australia on Sunday. The movie may have started slow, but when Steven arrived at the prison there was non-stop action. I loved Steven's fight scene with the commando when he continually blocked lots of punches, before doing his own moves, and a great stop kick. I really enjoyed the fight with another commando when Steven finished him off with an aikido throw, great stuff. Wonderful and different to see a man (Ja Rule) get beaten up by a woman. The bad guy played his part well also. Just proves that you shouldn't listen to the critics, saying Steven's hardly fights, and he isn't in the movie. Steven was in the movie as much as any of his others. Steven had just the mix of fights needed for the movie, with great support from other actors. As Steven said in an Australian interview he doesn't want to make the exact same movies each time, he wants differences. I liked seeing Steven beat a lie detector as well, with his calm manner. If you put Steven's influence in this movie aside, and be objective, which the critics aren't, you see that Half Past Dead is just a fun action movie. The critics could see that if they weren't so obsessed with personal attacks on Steven and trying to make him look bad. We as true fans don't care what the critics say. I rate Half Past Dead as a 7/10. Thanks Steven Seagal for another great action movie.

Ok... to be fair, here's my mini review of HPD.

*Basically it was a rehash of his biggest hit, "Under Siege", minus the budget, the good supporting cast, quality action scenes, etc. Seagal had one dinky fight scene which was horribly edited. He couldn't even move, yet thanks to a fast cut, he throws a guy across the room. The main problem I had with this was how uninterested Seagal looked in this flick. He looked very bored. At least Ja Rule injected some humor into the story (what story), but even his tough guy act wore thin. Morris Chestnut was the worst part of Under Siege 2, so why they tapped him to be the bad guy is beyond me.

The wire use was heavy. People jumped from high places, yet you never see them land. Plus, millions of bullets are shot off, but nobody gets hit, and there's no blood. Seagal was in most of the movie, but he didn't do much. He had very few lines, and he basically waved a gun around and let Ja upstage him. This was a bad movie, which flopped accordingly. Whenever a movie gets over 50-60 negative reviews, and 1 positive review, that says something. I read reviews of critics who had given past Seagal movies positive reviews, yet didn't like Dead. I don't like critics myself, but sometimes they're right. I go into movies wanting to like them, and I take most of them for what they're. If they're bad, I will trash them. HPD was lame, almost as lame as "Exit Wounds" was, the other difference being, at least DMX was cool, and the movie was released by Warner Bros., not Sony Screen Gems.

*/****

(I'm being generous by giving it one star)

Tommy's Review

Tommy

The critics of Steven have always panned him and his movies, mostly attacking Steven personally. I would never support them over Steven, the critics are old and fat and need to look in the mirror before attacking Steven. DMX and Ja Rule were merely secondary support, and without Steven annoying and uncool. Morris Chestnut was a great support in Under Seige 2, and there was no worst part in that movie. Apparently like the critics, you mistake Steven's calm manner, as in real life as a lack of interest. You don't know Steven's martial arts has brought this calmness to his life, as well as buddhism. There was less wire work in Half Past Dead than Exit Wounds, Steven's fights were even more realistic in Half Past Dead as well. Tommy go and watch the movie again and get your facts right, no blood and bullets hitting people means this is a movie not real life, so who cares. As Steven said at the end of Half Past Dead, have we got issues, you obviously have with Steven, so keep them to yourself. I loved it when Steven beat the lie detector with his calmness in Half Past Dead as well.

I agree with your first statement, but I mentioned in the previous post how some critics gave several of Seagal's earlier films solid reviews. That was when he was younger, in shape, and alot more motivated. There's a difference between having a calm manner and looking like you want to crawl into a ball and die. I'm exaggerating a little but you get the point. Seagal doesn't seem to know what to do at times on camera. He stares blankly at the screen, and seems bored. This could be because he knows a particular movie sucks, or maybe because that's just how he is. Regardless, not every critic is "old" and fat". These same critics have slammed some of Hollywood's best actors over the years (Pacino, Deniro, Costner, Douglas). They've also praised them when they make good films, so it all depends on the quality put into the project.

DMX and Ja Rule weren't "secondary" at all. You need to get your facts straight there. DMX shared top billing with Seagal in "Exit", and many people referred to it as X's movie. (Ex: Entertainment Weekly, and various movie reviews). Ja was shown doing alot more in the trailer and T.V. previews than Seagal was. Why do you think they put these guys in Seagal's movies anyway? One, because they help expand the audience, and two, they have good screen presence. There was alot of wire work in HPD. So you assumed the people jumping off of railings, or flying through the air on chains was done without them? LOL

As for the lack of blood, I never said it was pertinent to the movie, but when you watch hundreds of rounds shot at somebody and yet no blood, and nobody gets hit, it gets annoying and dumb. Finally, I've said this time and time again, I like GOOD MOVIES. Seagal has sung downhill, and is closing in on Van Damme territory. That's fine you still like his recent films, but you definately are in the minority. Anybody who admits to liking crap like "The Foreigner" needs to be schooled on what is good and what is bad in film.
