Hi is anyone as high in Aikido as Seagal?

Littledragon

Above The Law
Nope. I am a 3rd degree blackbelt in Tae Kwon Do though testing for 4th soon.

I studied Aikido but I want to go to Japan to study Aikido so now I study Brazilillian Jiu-Jitsu.

facts

IT would take some doing considering its taken him 30 years to atrtain what he has. there are some that are a 10th dan but were talking lifetime committment there. if you see Aikido World Journal.com it will show photos and ranks of senseis including Stevens (7th)

I would love to hear from some high officials too!

Still, thought, about Seagal's rank...

I clearly remember the original official site saying that Seagal had received an 8th dan in Aikido...

P.S. It should be noted that :
a) this list is not intended to signify that ranks are all important;
b) it makes no comparisons between ranks in different organizations. The Fugakukai has the same number of ranks as in Judo (10); Tomiki Style goes only until 8th Dan; and so on;
c) According to my personal tastes there are some 8th Dan that I may consider equivalent of another 4th or 5th Dan and there is at least one 3rd Dan which I consider very much worthy of a 6th Dan. Well, so's life...
Good morning to all

Thank you for the information..

Thank you for some of the link to the various website, I did not know that Karl Geis was the highest; doing some reading on him...SAS you said that it would take 30 years to reach 10th dan?

If so then i would have a long way to go not if they used meditation with Aikido? Dragon maybe you can enlighten us?

With blessing,

Within aikikai there are no 10 dan alive. Steven Seagal is 7th dan (he received it 1995). You don't "earn" a 8th dan. If you promote aikido and are doing a great job at it and are generally recognized and beloved teacher, and have had the honor of a 7th dan for a decade or so then you might be bestowed the honor of 8th dan (all within aikikai of curse nothing else).

Dan Ranking

Hello All,

Dan ranking requirements and time in rank varries widely from martial "organization" to another. Traditional lines of Judo tend to promote slowly. For example, my teacher began his Judo training in 1955 in Okinawa--nearly 50 years and still training and teaching (he's 70 years old). He holds a 7th dan in Judo. He started training Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate-do in 1956 and holds a 9th dan. The following are our guidelines for dan promotion:

Shodan: About 4-5 years regular training;
Nidan: 6-7 years regular training;
Sandan (3rd dan): 9-10 years regular training;
Yondan (4th dan): 13-14 years regular training;
Godan (5th dan): 18-19 years regular training;
Rokyudan (6th dan): 24-25 years regular training;

7th, 8th and 9th dans are based on your contribution for the arts and are not "tested" as such. They also require certain age requirements--9th dans should be in their 60's or 70's, etc.

At the same time, there are many other systems and styles that have their own promotion standards. I have heard of a TKD practitioner who, at 8 years old, held a 4th dan. I often see schools that promote quickly mainly as a means to generate revenue through testing fees. It is not unusual to see students who have trained for 1 year sporting a black belt. That may be alright for some, but seems unfair to the student--just my opinion.

As another bit of information, I have lived and trained Daitoryu at the Daibukan in Japan and found they promoted much quicker than our organization--2-3 years for Shodan, etc.

FYI

Best Regards,
Gary Gabelhouse

Something I heard about TKD...

... I've heard that beyond 6th dan, it's the experience in TKD that will promote you further ... that's how Chuck Norris got his 8th dan...
