Here is a close-up shot of Haruo Matsuoka Sensei that was used to publicize his participation in Aiki Expo 2003. Matsuoka Sensei currently operates dojos in Irvine and Culver City, California and was a long-time student of Steven Seagal and Seiseki Abe Senseis.

This is a rare photo of Katori Shinto-ryu swordsman Yoshio Sugino Sensei posing with famous actor Toshiro Mifune on the set of the "Miyamoto Musashi" c. 1957.

Admiral Gombei Yamamoto was a military and political leader of the Meiji (1868-1912) and Taisho (1912-1926) periods, and twice prime minister (1913-14, 1923-24). He was an early patron of Morihei Ueshiba beginning in 1925 and was instrumental in helping Ueshiba establish himself in Tokyo in the mid-1920s by introducing the Aikido Founder to important people in high social circles. Yamamoto's son, Kiyoshi, trained under Ueshiba for several years in the mid-to-late 1920s.

This is one of the earliest known photos of Rinjiro Shirata Sensei (1912-1993), one of Aikido Founder Morihei Ueshiba's most skilled prewar uchideshi. Shirata Sensei resumed his aikido career after the war rising to the rank of 9th dan. He was extremely gifted as an instructor and loyal to the Aikikai Hombu Dojo.

(29 March 1912-29 May 1993). 9th dan Aikikai (1972). Awarded 10th dan posthumously. Aikikai Shihan. B. Oyamura, Yamagata Prefecture. From a family of OMOTO believers whose mother practiced AIKI BUDO at a dojo of the BUDO SENYOKAI in Japanese-occupied Manchuria. Entered the KOBUKAN DOJO in 1933 and was known for his exceptional physical strength. Shirata was later dispatched to Osaka where he taught until his induction into the Japan Imperial Army. Shirata he resumed teaching c. 1960 continuing until shortly before his death. He supervised publication of the 1984 book in English, Aikido: The Way of Harmony by John STEVENS (see bibl. ).
