I think people need to chill, with regards to OUT OF REACH

After seeing the review on AINTITCOOL for OUT OF REACH, I understood what the reviewer was saying. The fact of the matter might be, that OUT OF REACH is a lousy movie (god forbid) but you know what...(and this might come as a shock to some people here)...STEVEN SEAGAL is a human being (gasp)
I know most of the lady-folk on this site, adore him. And he is a awesome aikido (amongst other arts) master. I personally think OUT FOR JUSTICE is one of my favourite (if not, the greatest) movies ever.
But i think that VERN made his points clear, and do you know what?....STEVEN is larger than he was years ago. And something else, he has (shock horror) made some bad pictures. And maybe the shoddiness of this picture (OUT OF REACH) is funny enough, to be considered laughable.
What's wrong with someone taking the p*ss out of STEVEN SEAGAL (he's actually a fan, as well!) STEVEN SEAGAL is big enough (no pun intended!) to take criticism. Rich enough, not to be bothered. And (as we all know) more than capable of fighting for himself.
I have been on this site (and the official site) for over 4 years now (or so) and i've never shyed away, from telling people (who genuinly hate SEAGAL) where to go. But i think it's time, that some, grew up, and stopped worshipping SEAGAL, for something he is not. Look beyond, what you didn't like about VERN's review, and see that he's a fan, who is not adverse to telling it like it is. Let's face it STEVEN SEAGAL movies are not high-art. Just enjoyable action movies, featuring someone (who as far as i'm concerned) is STILL the top in his field. But i too, can (and could) easily rip into the many faults of a typical STEVEN SEAGAL movie. But then, i'd have to be stupid, to have posted here 4+ years, and bought all of his movies, in every available format. Lampooning someone, doesn't mean you hate that someone. But pretty soon, posts here, will start to read "i like steven seagal"....followed by..."me too" I've read on other sites, that this site is populated by angry rednecks, who won't have a bad word said about SEAGAL. Now i know that isn't true. But have you ever thought that vern's review about the movie and SEAGAL's appearence, might be correct.
Surely it's time, to not settle for second best were STEVEN SEAGAL is concerned (i mean, if he makes bad films, let him know, before he makes others) and don't knock others for having opinions. Everyone on this site has a least favourite SEAGAL movie (mines the dreadful OUT FOR A KILL) but i'm sure some people like THAT movie.
I welcome you, VERN to this site (say what you want about STEVEN SEAGAL)
i've never seen another reviewer from another site, visit this one before and what does that tell you?

peace (oh, by the way, what i have written, is aimed at those who took VERN's comments the wrong way. If you didn't, then this matter does not concern/or is aimed at you)

It's under something like MOST IMPORTANT REVIEW EVER link. Failing that, if you type the title of the movie into the search box, you should find it

Hope this helps

Lee,
As I have said on every film that Steven Seagal
has made ........"I'll wait and see it myself and
make my own decisions"! I never take the "word"
of any so called critic who may have his/her own
axe to grind.
God bless,

Mama San,
I totally agree with you. I think the big reason I was harsh on the critic (Vern) is people need to use tact if you are going to judge a actor and his movies. I know he is human. I know he is not god. I do not love him. I think highly of him, and yes I do care about him as a person. I also know that even though Mr. Seagal is famous and wealthy that doesn't mean he does not have feelings anymore. As a fan I am willing to come to his defense if I feel compelled to. It does not hurt to be honest about the movie, but tact would be a good idea. I am sure he doesn't need people pointing out to him that he has put on weight. Any person who has put on weight knows they have. No microphone, or neon lights needed. It reminds me what one of my children did. A customer came to buy eggs and my child said to me in front of the customer "Momma, she is FAT!" A woman who is over three hundred pounds does not need to be told there is a problem. That is something every person who has a weight problem needs to deal with themselves without getting insulted for it. That is my rebuttal for anyone who did not care for my input. I am allowed to contribute yet, am I not?:)

Julie you are so right, I totally agree...
And some people actually find a bit of padding attractive...
It does take some tact not to hurt someone's feelings, though...
Nothing wrong with trying to do that at all...
Unless you've had a problem with being heavy, it's hard to know what it feels like to be judged on that, especially if you were judged as a very attractive SLIM person, before...
I want Steven to know that I LIKE him the way he is...
I find him even more attractive now then I did when he was thinner...
I guess he's just so huggable and manly that way...
I don't like bony men, skinny just isn't appealing to me...
And the older I get the more I think that...
Anyway, I know it must be hard for him to hear that crap, as it is for me...
Even I stare at the really overweight people, and I tell myself that I don't want to
be looked at in that way...
So I'm trying to control my eating...
Not doing so well lately, but tommorow is another day...
All I can say is that if he wants to lose, more power to him, but I hope that he'd leave just a little extra warmth there for me to hang on to...;)
I wish I could have every bit of him, the more of him the better, IMO, I wouldn't object at all...
But I know, sometimes weight does makes one self concious...
I just hope he knows he's just gorgeous to me, in so many more ways than one...
Real love is uncondtional...:)

Second of all There are bad reviews for allmost every movie that gets released... Seagal movies or not.... allmost all movies gets bad reviews and I for onces will not pass judgement before I have atleast seen an trailer! This may not be a movie for the adverege joe.... but for a hardcore Seagal fan the movie will most likely turn out great  ;)

I liked all of his new once except OFAK & maby T.F. Seagal still does well so I dont think we will be dissapointed. 1 bad review isn't the end of the world

Out of Reach

Well still guys I'd like to hope it is a lot better than the reviewer made it sound, for one main reason - the version he saw was an unfinished, poor quality screener. I once saw a bad copy of Titanic before it was released and the heinous quality of it made even the grand scale of that film look cheap.

Hey thanks Lee, I appreciate it bud.

But hey, for the last time, I did not criticize Seagal's weight. For crying out loud, some of you I don't think even read the review. I DEFENDED what I called Seagal's "Fat Elvis period." Most people who read Ain't It Cool News, and in fact, pretty much everyone in the whole entire world, I'm sorry to point out, look down on Seagal's later period (even more than in his earlier period) and make fun of his weight. I attempted to deflect this criticism by comparing him to Tomisaburo Wakayama, who plays the great badass Ogami Itto in the Lone Wolf and Cub series (also known as the Babycart series or Shogun Assassin) and who famously sports a double chin. I have also compared him to the great chubby blaxploitation icon Dolemite. In my review of Belly of the Beast I said:

"I know, I know, alot of people make fun of Seagal for his new size, and because he moves so slow. I think in this one though they actually made him look kinda intimidating. I never noticed him being all that tall before but here it seems like he's about six inches to a foot taller than every single other character."

And furthermore, Harry Knowles, who runs the sight those reviews were run on, is much fatter than Seagal. I've seen him in person and he's pretty big. And I often enjoy "putting the smackdown" as the kids say on the little creeps in the talkbacks who attack Harry for his weight.

Seagal's speed is another thing though. If he could still move as fast as he did back in the day then I'd say hell, go even fatter. Go WAY fatter. A big dude moving fast is a great thing (see Sammo Hung, King Kong Bundy, sumo wrestling, etc.). If that was the case he'd be able to use the title BELLY OF THE BEAST with great pride. It would become his trademark. And nobody would care. I think the decline in his fighting is the relevant issue, not the size of his chin or tightness of his girdle.

anyway thanks guys

Vern

VERN
Any comparrison with the legendary Dolemite(THE GUY WHO KILLED MONDAY, WHIPPED TUESDAY, PUT WEDNESDAYS ASS IN HOSPITAL, PHONED UP THURSDAY, TO TELL FRIDAY, NOT TO BURY SATURDAY ON SUNDAY!!!!) should be seen as a compliment.
I personally feel, that the weight works in his advantage (i mean, come on, he is 6 foot 5!) and i thought he looked a little scrawny in (the otherwise excellent) ABOVE THE LAW

Even with Sensei being older now and moving a little slower(notice I said a LITTLE), I still wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of any of his techniques!!!!! I have seen him in action, and all I can say is YIKES and OUCH!!!!:D
Take care
