The fifth entry in Universal Pictures' Bourne franchise has scored a new writer in Andrew Baldwin, the scribe behind the upcoming Pierre Morel actioner Bastille Day. He'll rewrite the Robert Ludlum adaptation from an existing script by Anthony Peckham.
Although the news comes just days after Matt Damon, the franchise's original star, reiterated his willingness to return to the role if director Paul Greengrass steps back behind the camera, it is expected that the Fifth Bourne adventure will, as with 2012's The Bourne Legacy, follow Jeremy Renner's Aaron Cross. Justin Lin is attached to direct with a release date of August 14, 2015 already in place.
"We're gonna follow Jeremy's character," producer Frank Marshall told ComingSoon.net about the fifth film shortly before Legacy opened. "Everything else is wide open. That's the great thing about this now. The table is set to go any direction we want to. But we will, I'm sure, follow Jeremy and see what happens. Jeremy and Rachel [Weisz]."

The Bourne Legacy also starred Edward Norton, Albert Finney, Joan Allen, Scott Glenn, Stacy Keach and Oscar Isaac.

There has been a surprise change of plans for the future of Universal Pictures' Bourne franchise today as Deadline reports that the studio is now negotiating with star Matt Damon and The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum director Paul Greengrass to re-team for a fifth big screen entry.

According to the outlet, this new film will take the July 16, 2016 release date previously assigned to a different Bourne sequel. That film, a big screen followup to The Bourne Legacy with Jeremy Renner in the lead, will remain in development for release at another time.

This story is still breaking, so check back for details on Damon's return to the
Bourne franchise as they become available!

Although we learned last month that Matt Damon is planning on returning to the Bourne franchise alongside The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum helmer Paul Greengrass, The Bourne Legacy star Jeremy Renner today assures CraveOnline that we haven't seen the last of his Aaron Cross.

"Its still moving," Renner says of the project, which has four-time Fast and Furious franchise helmer Justin Lin attached to direct. "We have our director, whos actually run off to do the 'True Detective' series right now, and then, while thats happening, theyre finishing writing the script. I know Greengrass and Damon well, I've heard have maybe cracked an idea. A reason to continue the 'Bourne' series, which is fantastic. They have created a very exciting universe, and hopefully in my mind I'd love for us to do something together. If not on the next one, sometime very soon. I think that would be really great. I know I want it. I feel like the fans want it as well."

Assuming both projects stay on the schedule, it sounds like a potential Jason Bourne/Aaron Cross crossover film will happen a bit farther down the line, if at all. That shouldn't stop fans from having some fun speculating, however, and Renner is ready to do just that.

"I think you pit them against each other," he says, explaining his basic pitch for a crossover film, "and then they go together against the bad guy. We realize that we're not the enemy. I mean, I think a thousand people can come up with that scenario, but I think you do both. I think that could be really interesting. Mind you, there have been NO talks, whatsoever, creatively about that. So that's just the fanboy in me, I suppose."

Renner can next be seen in Kill the Messenger, the biopic of Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist Gary Webb. He'll then be back in 2015 in both Avengers: Age of Ultron and Mission: Impossible 5.

A fifth Bourne film is set to be released on July 16, 2016, but no official confirmation has been made as of yet in terms of who will be starring.

Matt Damon has confirmed a recent report that he will return for a fifth installment in the Bourne franchise, to again be directed by Paul Greengrass.

Talking to E! News along with Ben Affleck (upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), the two gave an update.

"Well, [Damon's] going to be doing a Bourne movie next fall when I've just completely lost any semblance of physical fitness. So...," Affleck said.

Damon added that "it'll be in 2016 when the movie will actually come out. [Director] Paul Greengrass is going to do another one and that's all I ever said. I just needed him to say yes."

It was previously reported that the new film will take the July 15, 2016 release date originally assigned to a different Bourne sequel. That film, a big screen follow-up to The Bourne Legacy with Jeremy Renner in the lead, will remain in development for release at another time.
