Jet Li's "Kiss Of The Dragon".........

I just received Jet Li's "Kiss Of The Dragon" on DVD from Amazon along with "Romeo Must Die" and have to say it f*cking rocks!

I only got around to seeing it but it was worth getting as it contains some really brilliant martial arts scenes. Li who I've saw in some earlier Hong Kong films is really watchable and find he has a cool screen persona as the quite guy who just beats the f*cking crap out of all the bad guys. You know the hardness of a guy who accidently walks into the training dojo of a police station (numbering around 30 members) and hands them all their asses. Bridget Fonda also did well in this film and is an actress who can convey both tough brashness with underlying vulnerability. It also contains one of the nastiest villains I've seen, played by that french guy who was also the baddie in "Bad Boys"(1995). The thing which may impress a lot of martial arts film fans is that it contains next to no fights on wires (unlike "Romeo Must Die") and is almost all traditional if very violent and improvisational (snooker table scene anyone?) hand to hand combat.

And finally it showcases one of the best, if unusual, villain death scenes I ever seen in a film of this type. Without giving much away, when blood starts to pour profusely out of the bad guys eyes, you know he has met with a satisfying demise.

Anyone else watched it?

Peace.

Yep...I have it also....I think it's great and liked it better than RMD...mainly becasue he went back to the standard no special effects fighing......did you notice the Jet Li wrote it???
and I think KOD has the hidden tralier....or is it on RMD DVD....one of them has it ..I know that....when you go thru the menu selects...look for the "dragon"symbol" that will illuminate...that's where the hidden tralier is....
....out of the 3 I have(Western films).....RMD,KOD & The One......KOD is it....all the DVDs are packed with extras...good buy..great DVD

Hi J Lucus.

I would agree with you that it is better than "Romeo Must Die" for the same reason as you stated, that it contains no CGI or wire tricks in the fight scenes. I don't mind wire work per se and find a lot of it exciting to watch but conversely it is also nice to be reminded of a martial artists natural ability once in a while without relying on gimmicks. I also noticed that Jet Li had someting to to with the writing (I think actually he came up with the story idea similar to what Seagal did with "Above The Law")of the film and maybe that is why the film was a bit more relient on old fashioned MA combat. By the way, what did you think of the scene in the laundry chute where Jet Li puts the grenade into the fat guys baggy shirt? I thought the messy result was cool and a little unusual to be as graphic as it was.

I have'nt saw "The One" but have heard mixed views on it. Some say it is good, with him fighting a clone of himself, others say it contains to much CGI and wire stuff.

Is it worth buying?

lol..I thought the scene was original.....and great ...tho' I have had the video of KOD and I did notice a different dialouge when he took the video tape from the surviellence room(I noticed an audio difference in Seagal's OFJ also)...he stops briefly to listen to what's being said over the 'com'..in the tape version we hear the French Inspector saying that he wants him found dead....i=on 'my' DVD all I hear is comotion...and no such line is heard....which makes that particular scene less effective on the DVD.....

Well....being we all have different tastes in films....I can't say whether to but it or not.....it does go back to alot of wire work and even CGI...due to the fact that in a few scenes a 'fake' Jet Li'(that's what they call him in the doc that come with the DVD) is used and they even cut in the real Jet Li's face in a scene...
after watching KOD...I really didn't care for it at all......a somewhat interesting scenario...about the multi-verse....that we exist in real time within mutiple universes.....when traveing between these universes became possible...the "fake Jet Li" realises that if he kills the other "him" in the other universes.that he in turn gains there strength and energy...so the story takes place that the fake one has killed all the other Li exsistenses..exceot one...and that's the real Jet Li character......nobody knows what exactly happens if all our counterparts are all killed and only "The One " remains...some think the universe will end......some think the surviving one will be a god......special effects, etc....but I found it kinda boring because eveybody knows it's a double....but I have to say that Li did a great job acting both parts...he really knows his s*** as far as I'm concerned......but as i said after KOD........I found it back to the (now old) CGI & wires...
to me KOD was a refreshing break in between these types of films......and out of the 3 I have...The One is "The One" I least watch and enjoy....I'd rent it before buying it unless you're a Jet Li fan and can pick it up used for a few bucks like I do...it does have alot of extras too...no alternate endings or deleted scenes tho'...mainly the behind the scenes docs..which I find interesting in the fact to see Jet Li working on the set.
Oh.being you got the RMD DVD.....how about that scene made of 3 parts put together...pretty impressive for the wire work CGI team...

Thanks for the info on "The One". I think I'll probably rent it first to see what its like.

Also I did'nt know that about the scene in "Kiss Of The Dragon" on video being different from the DVD. I have saw that before with other films differing from their video to DVD release or in the case of "Hard Target", the rental video was different to the retail video. The retail video had extra scenes that were censored on the rental one (a strange example of this occurs during the final confrontation with Van Damme & Lance Henrikson where a whole chunk of dialogue about him firing a bullet in every country and images of the gargoyle mardi gras floats are absent).

BTW, what audio difference occurs in "Out For Justice"? Just curious.

Regarding "Romeo Must Die", I hav'nt watched the special features yet but one thing which did impress me in that film was the use of x-ray shots when he breaks someones bones. That was cool to me.

Take it easy.

Really.....out of JCVD work I alwas liked Hard Target...I thought it was one of his better ones.....mainly to the "Woo man" directing it.....and it didn't have the usual Van damme "triple play effect" everytime he did a kick...I mean he would kick once..and they usually edited it show the one kick 3 times..etc..I got tired of that real fast...

It's not a dialouge difference...but a sound variation...in the bar scene befor he takes on all the patrons..Seagal fires his gun into the roof....in the tape version..the gunshot is loud..being indoors it would be.......on the DVD it's barely audible..more like a 'poof'..lol

Oh man..they have a whole segment of that "extreme pain" effect(I think that's what the guys were calling it)....

You now that scene in KOD where Li kicks the pool ball and kills the guy(hotel....in the beginning)...I always thought he was on a wire for that..when in the behinds scenes it's clearly seen that he's not...it's those kind of things I find interesting in those extras..
