Mel Gibson Joins Machete Kills

Things are moving steadily forward on Robert Rodriguez's Machete Kills as Deadline reports that Mel Gibson is close to joining the cast and The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Rodriguez hopes to fully direct the sequel to the 2010 film (which he co-directed with Ethan Maniquis).

Gibson's potential role is currently undisclosed but his name has been rumored for some time.

Rodriguez, meanwhile, says that the current plan is to shoot the totality of the sequel himself but that, depending on scheduling with Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, he may turn to another director for help.

"There’s so much of it that I want to direct I’ll probably end up directing the whole thing,” Rodriguez said, “But if I have to step off, I’m going to try and shoot all of the actors and all of the main sequences. But it’s such a fun movie, and it just came out even more fun than I could have imagined.”

Rodriguez had announced last summer that Machete Kills will include a Grindhouse style trailer for the third (at the moment fictional) entry in the franchise, Machete Kills Again... In Space!.

The new film is said to have Machete (Danny Trejo) teaming with the U.S. Government to take on a Mexican drug cartel and a James Bond-style villain who seeks world domination with a satellite weapon.

The original Machete also starred Robert De Niro, Jessica Alba, Steven Seagal and Michelle Rodriguez. At the moment, there is no confirmation of who else beyond Trejo might be returning.

Charlie Sheen Joins Machete Kills

Production is now underway in Austin, Texas on Robert Rodriguez's Machete Kills and the writer/director has been Tweeting both casting news and behind-the-scenes images from his official feed.

As you can see in the first image, Charlie Sheen has joined the cast and will be playing the President of the United States.

"Who better?" Rodriguez quips.

Rodriguez has also revealed the below shot of leading lady Jessica Alba who, through her own Instagram showed off herself posing with Danny Trejo and an all-female mariachi band.

Sofia Vergara, meanwhile, via WhoSay offers a first look at her own character in the film.

Also starring Mel Gibson, Michelle Rodriguez, Demian Bichir, Amber Heard, and Zoe Saldana, Machete Killsdoesn't yet have an official release date, but check back for details as soon as they become available.

Good on Danny Trejo for getting a sequel to Machete (2010) at age 68. Not really surprising though as unlike Seagal he does keep himself in good shape. With a cast as varied and interesting as the first film this should be a lot of fun.

I guess it's a sign of the times that Trejo has gone from supporting roles alongside Seagal in Marked for Death (1990) and Urban Justice (2007) to starring roles in cinematic releases like the Machete films and Predators (2010).

Gibson has a swordfight with Trejo in Machete Kills!

http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=93461

CS: Do you get to ham it up?

Gibson:
Of course it's extremely heightened because you're working on "Machete," come on! And I get to have a sword fight with Machete. He has his machete and I have a samurai sword, but it's kind of fun and it's full of surprises, because it brings the kind of Grindhouse action thing to it, almost celebrating being gratuitous in its drive and making no apology for it and making it fun, like some twisted fairy tale.

New interview with Danny Trejo. He talks Machete 2 and also a little bit about Steven Seagal:

EOIN: Very much so. On the last Machete you got to beat up Steven Seagal which is a rare thing.
DANNY: I actually know Steven and have been in a few movies with him. In fact I was the first person to ever kill him on screen. I was talking to him and he said “damn, I wish there something for me in Machete” so I said I’d call Robert and I said that Steven wants to know if he can do Machete and Robert said “Yeah, let’s find something for him” so Robert made him the main bad guy.

Here is the whole interview:

Part II introduces cloning mostly just to allow Trejo to kill Chilean Martial Artist Marko Zaror like 5 times. Rodriguez could use the same trick to bring back Seagal too if he wanted to.
