Meanings, Reason's why or did you know?

I thought it would be cool to put a thread in here that people can write to the rest of our family here about the different meaniings of things or reasons why of certian things that member's might find interesting, Kind of like an information page. The first one in case anyone might be interested is the meaning of The South Korean flag which I think is a very interesting thing to know. Not to mention it would be a killer question in a game of trivial pursuit.

Philosophical Meaning of the Korean Flag

The Flag of TAE GEUK is the South Korean Flag. Tae geuk means "the origin of all things in the universe". The circle in the center of the Korean Flag is divided into portions of red and blue by a horizontal "S" (sine wave),which represents the bioenergy force called "Ki". These red and blue portions symbolize the UM and YANG (yin and yang)theory of the eternal duality which exists in nature (heaven and earth; light and dark; hot and cold; good and evil; being and not being). In science this theory can be represented with the symbols for"plus"and"minus", representing positive and negative respectively. These dualities exist as a principle of the universe.
The four"Gye" (bar designs) in the corners of the flag are based on the UM and YANG principle of light and darkness. The location of these gye represent the four points of the compass. The Ee-gye in the lower left corner, indicates early sunlight as the sun rises in the east. Kun-gye in the upper left corner represents bright sunshine when the sun is in the south.Kam-gyein the upper right corner symbolizes twilight as the sun moves to the west.Kon-gye in the lower right, indicates total darkness when the sun is in the north. Together these symbols express the mysteries of the universe.

Flag folding.

If anyone here displays a flag outside there home, hopefully this will help you care for it when it comes down. Keep in mind as well, if you let your stars and stripes fly in the night, the only correct way to do so is if it is illuminated during dark hours. Also, one should note some utilize this meaning of folding the flag and others claim there is no meaning to folding of the flag. As far as I know there is no official agreed upon meaning by our forefathers, Legislature nor Executive Branch.

MEANING OF FOLDING THE USA FLAG

Have you ever noticed the honor guard pays meticulous attention to correctly folding the American flag 13 times? You probably thought it was to symbolize the original 13 colonies, but we learn something new every day!

The 1st fold of our flag is a symbol of life.

The 2nd fold is a symbol of our belief in eternal life.

The 3rd fold is made in honor and remembrance of the veterans departing our ranks who gave a portion of their lives for the defense of our country to attain peace throughout the world.

The 4th fold represents our weaker nature, for as American citizens trusting in God, it is to Him we turn in times of peace as well as in time of war for His divine guidance.

The 5th fold is a tribute to our country, for in the words of Stephen Decatur, "Our Country, in dealing with other countries, may she always be right; but it is still our country, right or wrong.

The 6th fold is for where our hearts lie. It is with our heart that WE pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States Of America, and the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all.

The 7th fold is a tribute to our Armed Forces, for it is through the Armed Forces that we protect our country and our flag against all her enemies, whether they be found within or without the boundaries of our republic.

The 8th fold is a tribute to the one who entered into the valley of the shadow of death, that we might see the light of day.

The 9th fold is a tribute to womanhood, and Mothers. For it has been through their faith, their love, loyalty and devotion that the character of the men and women who have made this country great has been molded.

The 10th fold is a tribute to the father, for he, too, has given his sons and daughters for the defense of our country since they were first born.

The 11th fold represents the lower portion of the seal of King David and King Solomon and glorifies in the Hebrews eyes, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

The 12th fold represents an emblem of eternity and glorifies, in the Christians eyes, God the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit.

The 13th fold, or when the flag is completely folded, the stars are uppermost reminding us of our nations motto, "In God We Trust."
After the flag is completely folded and tucked in, it takes on the appearance of a cocked hat, ever reminding us of the soldiers who served under General George Washington, and the Sailors and Marines who served under Captain John Paul Jones, who were followed by their comrades and shipmates in the Armed Forces of the United States, preserving for us the rights, privileges and freedoms we enjoy today.

There are some traditions and ways of doing things that have deep meaning. In the future, you'll see flags folded and now you will know why.

The Law and the Martial dilemna.

I know that this is in no way enough to answer all questions regarding the subject. I am posting this however for folks that might like to drink, get rowdy and get in to bar room brawls or whatever similar type things. Something for all to think about here.

Martial Arts and the Law

When it comes to the use of force and liability, many martial artists, including instructors, often have misconceptions about self-defense, the use of force and liability. Many martial arts styles teach the use of 'finishing techniques' that could be considered 'EXCESSIVE FORCE'.

"They start it, we finish it." This or a similar phrase is often heard in many martial arts classes, yet while this phrase may seem simple and logical enough, it could get the martial artist into a lot of trouble simply because they fail to take into account other considerations which come into play under the law.

Under common law, whenever a person offensively touches another person, an assault has occured. However, what many people fail to take into consideration is the seriousness (level) of the 'assualt' waged against them. This is VERY important as courts will limit the permissable level of your response to the minimum amount of force needed to thwart the level of assualt waged againt you, and even though you may be found not guilty in a criminal trial, you may still be found liable for damages in a civil trial.

Martial artists need to be very careful in their response, as many jurisdictions will often hold them to a higher level of accountability (similar to that of a police officer) because of their martial arts skills.

What to do? First learn what the self-defense law is in your jurisdiction ( especially in 'quirky' jurisdictions such as California ), as ignorance of the law is NO excuse. Reasonable and MINIMAL force is the rule! The ancient Kung-Fu ethic reflects well here: Walk away rather than argue; Argue rather than fight: Fight rather than harm; Harm rather than maim; Maim rather than kill; and kill only as a last resort.

Lastly, do not be afraid to use force in a confrontation [if it's justified], but know the law and plan your response appropriately [As it's said in police work, articulate, articulate articulate. Or, CYA. CYA = Cover your butt].

My Dad had a Military Funeral, they gave the flag to his Mother. The young guy who came to play Taps, got the message late, he was not in uniform, so he stood in the distance, which made it sound so much sadder!
Thanks for this info Rooster I didn't know the folding had such meaning!
Now it means more to me! :apeace:

Thanks Mr Rooster-very interesting & informative for those who don't know all the details.
Having been to an military funeral not long ago they also explained that the 3 shell casings they placed in the folded Flag represent each of the rounds they fired
