Umm, I know I'm being picky, but polar bears live in the Arctic (up North near the North Pole), not Antarctica (being the far south near the South Pole). The polar bears are only shot when they repeatedly come into the towns up north, and it doesn't happen that often. They do trank and relocate them whenever possible. I may be wrong here, but I believe that the hunting of polar bears is restricted to First Nations for whom the hunt is traditional, and even that is strictly monitored and very restricted. Most of the polar bear territory is now a national park, which means hunting is not allowed.
Polar bears are on the radar for the Canadian government's Ministry of the Environment as they are becoming endangered due to changes in their habitat, caused by global warming. What is happening is that the sea ice in Hudson's Bay is melting earlier every year. The bears go out on the sea ice to hunt for seals and fish, but because the ice is breaking up too early, the bears don't have enough time to eat enough to get them through the summer. Consequently, they may stay out on the ice too long, and sometimes drown trying to get back to shore. And, when they do get back, they are still hungry and may stray into towns, attracted by food smells. All this is a direct result of human actions that cause global warming.
Antarctica, on the other hand, is on the southernmost tip of our planet. There are no polar bears there, but there are lots of penguins. Antarctica is almost entirely made of ice, unlike the Arctic, which is earth covered in ice. Antarctica is indeed breaking apart, which is a cause of great concern as the melted glacial ice that results from the breakages could raise sea levels and lower sea temperatures. The consequences of that are as yet unknown, but could well be devastating for many species of marine life, and for many more species of birds who rely on that marine life for their food. As far as I know (and again I could be wrong) there are no land mammals in Antarctica.
