My latest achievements:
i did my 7th kyu on Saturday...surprisingly (Despite a hangover) I did quite well. There wasn’t much I could fault my self with, I am loving aikido and improving my self every day, right now its just about the best thing in my life.
I read in a book that o sensei once said “your teacher can only teach you a little bit you must learn the rest from your self with constant practice and discipline. .you teach your self the most”
That’s not an exact quote its just like what I remember but if I think about it I think wow it really is true to an extent you can go as serious as you want. You can go as spiritual as you want. you can apply it to your life as much as you want. your in charge as to how much you learn and take in and grow.

Anyhow I will try and upload a video clip of my performance at the demonstration. is there a way I can put it here for you guys to see?

Ask Craig; he'll need to approve it, anyhow, I think.

And congratulations! You're just zipping along! I'd love to see the clip, so I hope Craig can help you out.

Wow, that was quick! Congratulations!

I, too, have received many benefits from aikido, and more than ever, I wish I could be ushi deshi... but I'll have to just go to as many classes as my poor battered body will allow.

I think I have become more patient. Certainly my physical health has improved. My spiritual still needs a little more work, though.

Happy to have you checking in, Adrian! Teaching already, too - that's fabulous!

A bunch of us went to a yoshinkan demo last year held at the sports complex at Ryerson University here in Toronto. It was interesting watching what they taught, how they taught it and how the students evolved from the stiff, jerky, almost robotic movements of the regimented instruction into the smooth flow of the black belts.

However, the most interesting thing was that there was not one woman in the black belt group, although there were some in the white belt group, most beginners. The men in the black belt group, it was also interesting to note, looked to the last man like they'd be more at home in a wrestling ring. What was really interesting to note, though, was the visiting 8th dan instructor from Japan was just a very slender man, about 5' 8 or 9, and very fluid, unlike the students in the beginners class who apparently are all taught movement in a regimented, robotic way.

As my fellow student put it, "yoshinkai starts off stiff and ends up soft; aikikai starts off fluffy and ends up soft".

Keep up the good work, and check in more frequently, let us know how you're doing!

Hey, still a brown belt, still training regulary, as there are only three belts in yoshinkan, white brown and black. It's a lonnggg progression to black, but I'm almost there, doing the steps before jun,sho Dan and then it's shodan. Which I have been waiting a long long time for. And your so right it tdwoj, it does start out very robotic which is the basics but it definately is not like that as you advance, just a beginner thing I think to teach basics. Still love aikido and always will. Osu!

Thanks to all of you aikidodkas for sharing your journies, and not destinations on the aikido path, for it' slow and long path from what I've learned being in a beginner's class years ago in south Minneapolis, MN, but it's like heaven, I know I don't/won't regret learning aikido from any format
Do any of you have any stories concerning mixed-martial arts students visiting your aikido dojo, and trying their hand at the aikido lessons for the first time?
