Another VHS Screener in my collection, the first DTV of Seagal’s career, The Patriot, first te i noticed its actually getting better after 2 decades, after ive seen so much dtv crap, also i was surprise to see that it was distributed by Disney’s Buena Vista. Unfortunately no special trailer on the tape, same with On Deadly Ground and The Glimmer Man.

In the UK, THE PATRIOT went straight to SKY MOVIES (back in 1998) before limping onto video in late 1999.

I remember watching it on the night it aired on SKY and being disappointed (due to the lack of fights and overall action) but over the next few years (and given his increasingly 'ropey' DTV output) I've come to enjoy the movie. The cinematography is amazing (easily the best Seagal ever had)

Haha! I also saw it when it aired on SKY (I was 23 back in '98) and I was also filled with ultra disappoint and disbelief at the lack of fight scenes and action. But yes, as you quite rightly say Lee, the cinematography is superb in this film. Definitely something one can appreciate more as one gets older.

Oh yeah...and didn't the SKY version have a fight scene missing unlike the rental version? A fight scene that takes place outside his house? But I could be wrong and just dreamed that bit lol.

I remember taping the movie from the night it premiered (and nothing was cut or expanded)
The scene you're referring to was likely cut out (pre-production) and is briefly glimpsed in the trailer.

My best guess, is that the supposed fight was meant to occur after he (and his daughter) jumped out of the window (which had just followed on from the movies *only* other fight scene) before they made their getaway?
Given, that around this time (late 1990's) Seagal had expressed an interest in moving away from 'ultra-violence' in his movies....might explain the reason for this edit (however, it didn't deter Dr. Wesley McClaren from sticking a broken stem of a wine glass into a guys head at the finale?) :D

There's more unseen Seagal stuff on the following thread:

Sorry for spamming up your thread Krom :)

Thanks for the clarification Lee - you're right! And true about the wine glass at the end! Not much point cutting out violent fight scenes if you're going to end it on such a fashion. Oh well.

As for the lack of fight/action scenes we can probably blame that famous Buddhist (I forget his name atm) that Seagal was friends with at the time and made him a "tulku" (I think that's the right name?). I believe this is also the reason Seagal didn't make Blood On The Moon and a fair few other mooted projects in '98 and '99 (one of which was supposed to have been directed by Marked For Death director Dwight H. Little. Damn shame, eh?). Not to mention being the sole reason the Mafia were after him lol!! They blamed Seagal for backing out of violent action films that they had put money into.

Thankfully, good sense prevailed and Seagal started to make violent movies again starting with Exit Wounds in 2000 onwards. Good job too as something tells me no one (big fan or not) would've wanted to watch them if they were all a limited fights and violence free affair like The Patriot. Let's face it, The Patriot could've been a PG 13 film if it wasn't for the wine glass stab to the side of the head at the end? Now just think about that for a minute: a Seagal PG film!!! Perish the thought lol.

Never Seen before Marked for Death Making of ive got on the CBS/FOX screener made for video stores only in 1991!
Notice Predator 2 there. Not got the original version? I remember seeing one when it was released on Sky TV years ago and it had a lot more violence in it.

I remember the Sky TV premiere, it was intact except for a blood splatter when "Old Frank" is shot. The wine stem through the head was definitely in it, and there were certainly no extra fights that's aren't in the release version. It was actually released straight to cable apparently, along with an average Van Damme movie called Desert Heat aka Inferno which premiered around the same time.
