Steven Seagal: A Foundational Figure of Modern Martial Arts Cinema
Steven Seagal occupies a singular place in the history of action cinema. Emerging in the late 1980s and early 1990s, he redefined the genre through a restrained, efficient, and philosophy-driven approach to combat, heavily influenced by Aikido.

Unlike contemporaries who relied on explosive spectacle, Seagal’s screen presence was built on control, posture, and minimalism. Films such as Above the Law, Hard to Kill, Marked for Death, and Under Siege established him as a global figure and shaped a generation’s understanding of martial discipline on screen.

Over the decades, his career expanded beyond acting into production, music, and international cultural engagement. His later roles reflect a shift from physical dominance to symbolic authority — portraying leaders, mentors, and strategists whose power lies in experience rather than force.

In Order of the Dragon, Seagal embodies this mature phase of his career, anchoring the narrative with historical weight and continuity within action cinema.

Here we go......

There are problems with the movie. It seems director Vlekoslav Katusin is not a pleasant person to work with

OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM RETRO GOLD 63

Unfortunately, we must share some highly unpleasant news. Following multiple breaches of contract, we terminated Dream Team Pictures d.o.o., represented by Mr. Vjekoslav Katusin, with immediate effect from all activities as of February 13, 2026.
In this context, the film has been unlawfully withheld and misappropriated by Dream Team Pictures d.o.o., represented by Mr. Vjekoslav Katusin. Mr. Katusin holds neither the copyright nor any licenses required to legally or lawfully release the film. Our legal team is currently working intensively to recover the seized material.

The copyrights as well as the distribution licenses are held by Filmworkers GmbH in co-production with Retro Gold 63 UG and Shamrock Media.
We have repeatedly appealed to Mr. Katusin’s reason and were always willing to find a fair and mutually agreeable solution. Instead, we were subjected to both psychological and financial pressure and were effectively extorted. We were presented with two options: either pay a six-figure sum and receive the film in a cut that Mr. Katusin was neither commissioned nor authorized to produce, or he would release the film independently and unlawfully.

Naturally, we did not agree to these demands.

Any advertising or publication related to “Order of the Dragon” distributed by Mr. Katusin is done without our consent and without any legal basis. We therefore ask that such content be reported, as Mr. Katusin holds no intellectual property rights to this project.
Furthermore, cast members were encouraged to participate in promotional activities against their own wishes. Mr. Katusin also independently and without prior coordination filmed additional scenes for himself and his role. These scenes were at no point part of the agreed and finalized script.
The composer we engaged for the score, David Michael Frank – known for Above the Law, Hard to Kill, and Forrest Gump – was also prevented from continuing his work, as the film, as mentioned above, has been unlawfully withheld.

In addition, the actual producers as well as several cast members were wrongfully removed from IMDb, creating the false impression that Mr. Katusin is the main producer and holds the rights.
At no point did Mr. Katusin show any willingness to engage in constructive, solution-oriented discussions with us. Furthermore, he commissioned a third party to handle the film’s post-production without our consent.

During a visit to Croatia with the intention of retrieving the material—material to which we are contractually entitled at all times—we were prevented from doing so and were instead accused of acting unlawfully. From our perspective, this visit was portrayed in a criminalizing manner by Mr. Katusin, as if we had no right to reclaim our own material.

In addition, we were filmed against our will in this context in order to stage his version of events.
These and numerous other incidents ultimately led to a clear line being crossed for us.
In order to protect our cast and the film, we are prepared to take all necessary legal measures to put an end to these actions. We will prevent any illegal release by all means available to us.
We will not allow the hard work of the entire cast to be discredited.
We will, of course, keep you updated on any further developments.

Oh dear, this isn't good. The director must be off his head, what's his side of the story in all this then I wonder? I bet we'll never get to see this "classic" movie now.

Wait so...the Katusin guy (director?) basically hijacked the movie, made it into his own movie without regard to what the studio actually hired him to make...and now refuses to turn over the footage?

Interestingly, Order of the Dragon 2's IMDb page says that Smoorenburg will be directing and Katusin isn't involved. Safe to say that if Seagal sides with Katusin, he won't be involved either. The way Smoorenburg worded his post about Katusin and Seagal, there is some bitterness there and rightfully so until we hear Katusin's side.

It seems Katusin did this before. In Germany there some articles about him. It seems he threatens people to get what he wants. These are mafia things

It's really sad, after years Seagal finally appeared in a movie again, but maybe it will never be released...

They say you should never meet your heroes in real life so you won’t be disappointed, but Steven Seagal didn’t let us down!

Steven Seagal was very motivated and professional. Seagal went above and beyond what was required of him and even wanted to have one more fight scene in the film – and he got it. The screenplay was written by me together with Jean Rises to bring Seagal back, and Katusin worked entirely on our behalf. He drew up the contracts with the actors on our behalf (Filmworkers, Retro Gold 63 and Shamrock Media). Katusin breached several clauses in the contract and was sacked by us, but he refuses to accept this and is blackmailing us; he has also put pressure on his agent to ensure that his poster is posted on his Instagram page!

Long live Seagal
We’ll do everything we can to release this film, because this film is hard to kill and we’re out for justice and Katusin isn't above the law, and David Michael Frank has to produce the soundtrack so that this film sounds exactly like his early classics

There are no issues between Ron Smoorenburg and Seagal either, and we want Seagal to be part of the second Order of the Dragon as well!
Seagal proved on the set of *Order of the Dragon* that he is a true master, even at the age of 73!

Best Regards

Fascinating. Can you tell us any more about the situation? Do you not have a physical copy of the footage? Can you say what sort of clauses you believe he breached?
