Putin Welcomes Seagal to Moscow Festival

MOSCOW - Judo enthusiast Vladimir Putin (news - web sites) didn't try out any moves out on action star Steven Seagal (news) when he spoke Sunday to actors taking part in the Moscow International Film Festival.

The Russian president welcomed Seagal along with Italian actress Gina Lollobrigida (news) and Fanny Ardant (news) of France to his country residence outside Moscow.


Putin thanked the stars on behalf of their fans throughout Russia, and said he hoped they would return despite this year's relatively cool Moscow summer.


While in Moscow, Lollobrigida had also opened the first exhibition of her sculptures at a Moscow museum.


The film festival ends Sunday.

MOSCOW (AFP) - Russian President Vladimir Putin (news - web sites) received at his country residence three international film stars visiting for the 25th Moscow International Film Festival, his spokesman said.

Putin played host to American action actor Steven Seagal (news), Italy's Gina Lollobrigida (news) and France's Fanny Ardant (news) at his Novo-Ogaryevo country retreat near Moscow on Sunday, said Alexei Gromov.

The presence of the three stars at the film festival in the Russian capital shows that the event has assumed international stature, Gromov quoted Putin as saying.

Nikita Mikhalkov (news), an Oscar-winning director and festival president, was also present, Gromov said.

With Russia's next presidential election due in less than a year, Putin, who met with Paul McCartney (news) in May and attended the ex-Beatle's concert on Red Square, is never loath to meet with the big names in show business.

"All political men are actors, but I liked his reserve, his simplicity and I saw that he has an air of intelligence," Ardant said after the meeting.

Ardant's movie Callas Forever is the last one due to be screened at the festival.

3 Film Stars Get Invited to Putin's to Chit-Chat

President Vladimir Putin played host to U.S. action star Steven Seagal and two other international movie stars, in town for the 25th Moscow International Film Festival, at his Novo-Ogaryovo residence on Sunday.

Local television showed Putin chatting with Seagal, Italian actress Gina Lollobrigida and Fanny Ardant of France. Oscar-winning director Nikita Mikhalkov, the film festival's president, was present as well.

Putin said the attendance of the three movie stars at the weeklong film festival, which ended Sunday, has sealed its status as an international event. He also said he hoped they would return despite this year's cold and wet summer.

Ardant said after the meeting that she was impressed with Putin.

"All political men are actors, but I liked his reserve, his simplicity, and I saw that he has an air of intelligence," Ardant was quoted by Agence France Presse as saying.

Seagal, the star of action movies such as "Under Siege" and "Under Siege 2: Dark Territory," has told the local press that he is a big admirer of Putin.

He also said his father was Russian and that he knew Russian well as a child. He conceded, however, that he now only remembers the swear words.

Meanwhile, the film festival drew to a close under a rainy sky at the Pushkinsky theater Sunday night. Seagal presented the prize for best film to Spanish director Miguel Hermoso for his "La Luz Prodigiosa," or "The End of a Mystery," a drama set during the Spanish civil war.

No, I don't think it's Arissa - the hair's too short, and it's the wrong colour. Besides, if it was Arissa, she'd be hanging off his arm.

Hey guys,don't you know how Putin looks like?It's not him behind you.
Here's what I've found at the Russian sites.This video is about Putin's reception of the guests so it might also include Seagal.It's supposed to be via media-player.I can't view it but maybe you can.

By the way Suzi,it's great that you managed to find a photo from the festival.I've walked through all the Russian sites mentioning Seagal at the Moscow festival but no photos published anywhere.I think I'll contact them and ask them if they have any more Seagal pictures taken while he was there.Good job Suzi!I'm proud of you.

Yesterday I saw the closing ceremony of the festival and was thrilled and captured by the shivers of excitement when I saw this man walking through the path to the entrance.He was shaking hands of his fans and smiling and then he was walking along with some man and talking to him.
Later on when the ceremony began different personas would walk past him to the stage and they often showed him.And in the end he was invited to the stage to give and award to the Spanish director.First the director gave a speech and when he left Steven gave a speech himself.You folks have no doubt I've recorded everything on my tape and hung on every single word he said.And you know what,he said such nice things about Russia and it filled me with such a pride when he said he's Russian himself,he woke that old patriotic feeling within me that I'd had buried at the buttom of my soul for a while.And after that speech I have even more respect for him,more admiration,more love.And what's most fascinating-he's Russian!Common blood,I can already feel it in my veins!
