I have my Shodan coming up soon and am dreading the Randori, have done plenty on controled multi attacks but not in full on free play. A friend of mine sugest using just 2 seperate items (either kaitennage or kotegaeshi) but im more intersted in the mind set required - Does anyone have any sugestions or thoughts????

This is the point I guess, to have a clear unfocussed mind is still a mind set, someone told me that what he actually did was think about his girlfriend and just reacted to the tori as and when and didnt try to flurish with great moves and footwork just get the job done using things he learnt at 5th Kyu.

Good luck with it. I hope you do well and clear your mind for it.
I've got an empty mind if you want to borrow that. :p

Aikido is the path beyond thought.
I am not as experienced at martial arts as most on this site, but I find it works best when I kind of "unfocus" my mind. Not just letting it drift and daydream, but more just trusting my reactions and instincts.

Could I come along to maybe watch and learn as this would enable me to understand the moves ! I am sure that I would manage to understand this no problem as I have great difficulty in focusing on anything (except SS movies !) therefore the 'unfocus' bit would be good for me in this particular field - yes ...........

I would first say have a clear mind. Alot of evasions and kaitennage is a good technique during randori. Also is this more than a 2 person randori. When I was up for ShoDan, and even NiDan I had to defend against 3!!!! Given that scenario it was not in my best interest to do Kotegaeshi against anyone. I did alot of locking and throwing them into eachother and it was full on (I remember getting my lip split open, good times). Iriminage and Sayunage and sumi otoshi all work good in those instances!!!! Good luck and remember ShoDan is not the end, but only the begining!!!!

You know, people feel when they should think, and think when they should feel. With Randori, you cannot think about it. You can only feel, and react. Second nature. There is a Bob Dylan song called "No Time To Think." He sings "No time to lose...No time to Prepare...No Time to Blink...No Time to think." I always equated that song with how I felt when I studied Aikido. Don't prepare, don't blink, don't think, and don't lose.
