I was surprised when Steven got caught by those bad guys towards the end & they had him tied up to a chair in some building they were in. That was my first time seeing Steven vulnerable but of course he got himself free & kicked those bad guys asses LOL. Sharon Stone & Pam Grier looked good in the movie of course. Pam has gotten fat recently.

Above The Law: Review It.

This is the first out of all the Seagal movie rating threads.

We have never had a thread where you the members rate every Seagal film.

This is the first thread where you get to rate and critic on Above The Law. Write a brief review and score it anything out of 5 stars. Enjoy and I am looking foward on your "critical" views on Seagal's films.

My Review.

What can I say that hasn't already been said about Above The Law. This is the Seagal movie that really got me into Seagal after watching a couple of his movies on TBS. Above The Law in my opinion is one of the greatest martial arts films ever made, this film was ground breaking because it was the first to display Aikido in a movie. Not to mention it was Seagal's first film debut. From the opening Aikido scene you instantly knew this was going to be an extraordinary film that you have never scene before. The plot was fantastic and very well written as well directed. So there were a few lame acting dialouges but every film has that. The fight scenes were the best. I believe Above The Law has some of Seagal's best fight scenes. This film really showed the great skills of Aikido demonstrated by an expert master in the martial arts. The fights were so real and brutal and so street wise which made you feel you were in the danger as well as just saying hey thats a nice kick he threw. Above The Law stands to be my favorite Seagal film of all time and one of the best martial art movies stated in an article in Black Belt magazine.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars.

FU&D! Original Review - Above the Law - 3/4 guns

This is Seagal's first movie and arguably one of the best. Seagal plays Nico Toscani, an ex-CIA operative working as a commandeering Chicago cop. As director Andy Davis put it on the film set one afternoon: "What we're really doing here with Steven is making a documentary." Indeed, the intro sequence shows old video clips of Seagal training to become an Aikido master and then segways nicely into his involvement in Vietnam.

As regular readers of my website know, I don't really do story, but I will gladly discuss the violence. We get the very first Seagal vs. The Whole Bar scene which is great. It is kind of a pivotal moment for all violent action movies. From this moment on, we viewers kinda demanded our tough guy to go into a bar and kick some major ass. There's another good scene where he finishes off three guys using their machete and baseball bat, cutting off one guy's hand in the process.

There's also a fantastic scene on a city street where Nico, after disarming four guys, tells them to stand in a line. One guy talks back, claiming that Nico won't be able to drop all of them. What does Seagal do? He shoots the guy in the chest and says: "You're right, but I'll get an A for effort." Absolutely brilliant! Cold-blooded murder by a guy with a detective's badge around his neck. That's our Seagal! There also a good fight scene in a convenience story which has kinda become another Seagal trademark. So much so that the Great One recently spoofed himself in a Mountain Dew commercial!

The end of the movie is a bit of a disappointment however, with the main bad guy simply getting his neck broken. However, the movie has a unique feel and depth to it, so I award it three out of four Colt 1911 handguns.

This should deserve 4 out of 4 guns lol. :D

I think this is Seagal's greatst movie ever! Such a classic, the action and martial arts was breathtaking and this was the first movie to showcase Aikido to a widespread audience.
