Review: Exit Wounds

Ahhhhh....I don't quite write reviews for movies that often but I would like to say some things about Seagal's partically comeback movie titled Exit Wounds which opened March 16, 2001.

Let me start with this when I first went to see this movie in theaters when it came out on that day. I remember that I was around 16 going on 17 at that time. I remembered that I was feeling so excited and so happy because I missed seeing Seagal being on the big screen and it was going on 4 years of absentance from silver screen which counted that Fire Down Below was the last one before this one. I was feeling so hyped seeing Exit Wounds which is because of Seagal returning to the big screen again and I knew from that time that this movie was going to become a sleeper hit which it did. I was glad that it happened which went onto almost 52 million at the box office which broke his last 50 million hit which was Under Siege 2. That was 6 years ago before Exit Wounds came out. I always knew that Seagal would continue to do well with his movies when he's with Warner Bros. So, let me point this out, after Exit Wounds became a hit and I wished that he wouldn't have done Half Past Dead because I knew that it was going to stunk but personally, I think it was due to bad placement of a release date and the rating that hurt the appeal of Seagal's fans. So of course, that tells us something that making a PG-13 film with Seagal starring won't work because it doesn't fit his type of making films. Even it faced with Harry Potter 2 at that time which ruined the film big time. So...if he hasn't made Half Past Dead then it made me wonder about this...would he be making more films with Warner if Half Past Dead wouldn't happen? So that's the question that stayed in my mind for long time after realizing that Exit Wounds was a right film to do well at the box office.

Now, let me discuss with my feelings of viewing Exit Wounds. During the opening when there was no main credit titles which doesn't happen in any of Seagal's films which marked his first film ever that had no main credit titles but just a main title and that was it. So...after when I noticed the title of "Exit Wounds" faded away, I suddenly knew that the action was coming up pretty soon and fast which it happened. As when the camera moved down onto the ground and rotates around a car door showing Seagal getting out from the car. I couldn't even stop smiling and making a small funny noises while I was smiling because I was so glad to see Seagal on the big screen again and in my mind, I was thinking...wow...he looked great in shape and thank god for that. I even liked his haircut too which brought me back to Nico days but the hair was more done like what he did for Under Siege though. I wished that he could have left it little longer just like what he had in Above the Law.

I loved the opening with a presidental assassination attempt then the story travels through with Seagal being transferred to another police predinct. Then when I see Seagal in action again, it just made me smile even more and just realizing how much I've missed seeing him perform a movie that contained lot of action but at the same time, I knew that he wasn't doing all of his fight scenes because I knew he didn't choregraph all of his fight scenes. Then when I saw him using wire in some of his fight scenes, it was nice to see him doing something different but I felt that he should have continued using his own fight sequences because it is his style.

I was very disappointed with the fight scene between Seagal and Jai White because it wasn't staged really well enough and it was too short. I was expecting it would be that good like Seagal's best sword fight scene in Marked for Death even I was expecting it to be better than what he did for Marked for Death especially we all knew that Michael Jai White is a martial artist himself too but he has a different technique than what Seagal has. It would have been interesting though if we have seen more of that fight scene.

In conclusion, in my own words about Exit Wounds...I feel that this film is an average action flick but not the best work that Seagal has done because his earlier films were always better. However, it was great to see Seagal return in his form especially being on the big screen again for first time in a long while. There were few nice moments of the film especially great supporting cast with Anthony Anderson and Tom Arnold. I never really cared for DMX's performance and he's nothing to me. I just believed that he was just being in the film to give the film's a different taste and to appeal more people. I don't think hit at box office has to do anything with DMX's starpower in the film. It has to be Seagal, and the comedy relief between Anthony Anderson and Tom Arnold. The action itself in the film wasn't that great at all, just pretty average because it wasn't even that intense enough especially what Seagal has done in Marked for Death, Out for Justice and On Deadly Ground which had lot of good non-stop action. The number of action for Exit Wounds is about same as Under Siege, just had a thought. It was also nice to see Seagal doing a motorcycle chase which has never been done in any of his films. So right now, at this time after seeing several of dtv films that Seagal has made...nothing would match up to this film with an exception of Into the Sun which comes close to this film, in my opinion. Shadow Man comes in 2nd because it was nice to see Seagal perform a scene where he handmade weapons and stuff which reminded me of his old days.

final words...I'm hoping that Seagal's 2nd directorial effort titled Prince of Pistols would blow Exit Wounds right into the water in terms of action.

Exit Wounds was on UK tv last night and I thought it was great. nice car chases, gun fights and I loved the appearance by Bill Duke, (He is one of the funny bad guys in the Arny film "Commando") I just had t laugh when i seen him talking to Steven Seagal...I'm definatley going to buy this one.

Hard To Kill
After trying to sit through Attack Force I decided to watch one of Steven's older films in order to wipe away the memories of that lacklustre z-grade effort, and chose to watch Exit Wounds. WOW. I thought this was a pretty average action flick when I first watched it but seeing him look so fit and clearly enjoying himself was the perfect antidote. The opening action scene is better than anything I've seen in his later DTV films. Love the comedy too, especially the scenes with the anger management group and Steven getting busted down to traffic cop. I kept thinking through the movie that I'd love to see him make a big-budget comeback film where he plays a similar role...a former tough guy who's now considered politically incorrect but wins the day and the respect of the other characters at the end of the movie.
