If Steven Seagal wasn't a good actor, why is he still making movies ?
One day you'll see Mr. Seagal accepting his trophy at the Academy Awards

Why is Chuck Norris making films. Why is Kevin Costner making films. Why is Keanu Reeves, Ashton Kutcher, Jason Patric, Adam Sandler, Kevin Nealon, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Dolph Lundgren, or Nichole Kidman?

Have you seen his recent films? You call that acting? Hell, I don't even call them movies....

You don't need to be a good actor to make movies...Especially if somebody pays you a lot of money to memorize lines. Seagal, and all the other names, is making movies because his movies feature a product that attracts certain people. Like us. His action and fighting, attracts us. We don't see his movies because he's a "great" actor. You don't see Seagal get awards for acting. You see his movies because they're fun adventures and we want to see Seagal whoop somebody's ass.

Hell nobody goes into an action movie looking for an award winning performance. When's the last time an action movie won an Oscar or Academy Award? Action movies don't require a good script, a good plot and definitley don't require good acting. You see dramas, mysteries and romances at the Academy Awards. (With the except of Hong Kong / Chinese action films which are beautifully done).

Steven can attract people with his fighting skills, his tough guy persona, action adventure and his good looks (10 years ago)...but not his acting. Read the IMDb message boards atleast 3/4 of the people know cinema.

And if Steven never won an academy award when he was in his prime, and actually had his films go into theaters, how do you expect him to win one where he's putting in half the effort, double the quanitity and doesn't even have the box office / theater?

Oscars are for other contributions to cinema, not just acting

Why do you think Seagal is such a great actor? And include some supporting opinions to help support your statement. Are you aware of the people who win Academy Awards? Compare them to Seagal.

Were you not aware that Steven Seagal was an Oscar presenter at a past Academy Awards show?
Now you tell me why the Academy asked Steven Seagal's permission to appear on their show?
Aside from beef cake performers(Rambo, Conan, so on...), were you aware that other actors(physically normal looking) have won Oscars and appeared on past Academy Award shows?
Do you realize that Academy Awards do not discriminate against normal looking performers(afformentioned) to be nominated for Oscar trophies?
All of these reasons support not only my predictions, but other predictions for Mr. Steven Seagal to be awarded an Oscar someday
Once again, there is no comparison, Steven Seagal is the Actor among actors, what can i say?

HA-HA! Don's a legend. What has he been smoking? Seagal can't act, in fact he's got gradually worse as an actor over the years. His best performances were in his first few movies up to US. Seagal will never got an Oscar in a million years. There are many other action stars who have actually improved over the years as actors, Lundgren, Dacascos and especially Van Damme. They are better, more interestin actors than Seagal at the moment and they will never in a billion years get an Oscar, so Seagal has no chance. Even a great like De Niro can't get near an Oscar these days! Steven is an action ICON but there's no way you can call him a good actor. He's made his career by throwing people and beating the crap out of them, not for his acting ability. If Seagal wants an Oscar he'll have to go find Phillip Seymour Hoffman, mug him of his, and scratch his name into the side of it. Even Seagal himself wouldn't say he's a great actor. Seagal has never had a single complimentary award nomination for his acting, even Van Damme and Lundgren have, so there you go.

What the hell are you talking about? Yeah, so Seagal presented at the Oscars. Key word is PRESENTED and not ACCEPTED. There's a big different.

Do I realize the Academy Awards do not discriminate against normal looking performers? Um, I don't know of many abnormally looking award winners of my generation? Of course the AA's dont discrimate, that's the most stupidest thing I've ever heard. Just because Seagal is overweight doesn't mean he's not normal.

And Sylvestor Stallone nor Arnold Schwarzenegger have NEVER won Oscar or Academy Awards. Stop making up stuff.

Also I watched Merecenary For Justice again last night, just as bad as the first time I saw it.

It’s Time To Fight Again

My Two Cents (for what it’s worth):

Yet another direct to video release for Seagal; a little better than the last several films I’ve seen of his, but still not in league with Under Siege, Fire Down Below and others. “If you’ve seen one Seagal film, you’ve seen them all.” That seems to be a common creed used in discussion of the productions Seagal has been involved with in recent years. And it certainly seems to apply here. There are no surprises. The story doesn’t really even try to keep you guessing. The viewer is always one step ahead of the players – probably more like one giant leap. I keep hoping they’ll zig hear or there, but they always zag right when you expect them too.

This time around the show is helped out by the production though. The photography and pace go a long way toward keeping things interesting. The sound design, while not incredibly sophisticated or adventurous, gives an immersive performance. If only the story would hold up its end. Seagal’s down to earth, practical Aikido thankfully doesn’t require him to be in peak shape to look convincing on screen. And the camera work accentuates his technique well in this one.

Parental Warnings (hope this helps):

Lots of military and martial arts violence, including death and gore.

VIDEO:

1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen and 4:3 fullscreen presentations are included on opposite sides of a DVD10 disc. The widescreen presentation isn’t perfect. There are limitations apparent to the photography as well as the low bitrate encoding. Not every sequence is preserved or created equally. But, overall the video looks very good – at times amazing even; showcasing exceptional detail and image depth. Color depth is often very impressive. Blacks are deep yet well delineated.

Artifacting of varying origin, both natural and more maligned, is the primary thing that prevents a more complete transparency and higher score. Film grain is usually quite dominant. At times it is minimalized, but at others it appears either exaggerated by the encoding or a different film stock was used. Scaling artifacts are more apparent in some scenes than others as well.

AUDIO:

The audio is presented in English Dolby Digital 5.1. For such a low budget film the mix is surprisingly aggressive, attempting to recreate an immersive sound field with punch and excitement. The low end remains robust from the beginning. Though the encoding seems a little thin and of somewhat limited dynamics. A cheap dub and awkward accents were the biggest detriment to the sound design. The dub often has a removed quality that doesn’t fit the scene.

BONUS MATERIALS:

A 15 minute making of that manages to lend a little appreciation for the film is the only extra included.

Scene selection is divided into 20 chapters.

Wrapping Things Up:

If there are still any die hard Seagal fans out there that haven’t given up on him being cast in a stronger production, this one’s for you. It’s better than most of what I’ve seen he’s done in recent years, but still a far cry from his former glory.

Choking On Popcorn: MFJ Review.

http://www.chokingonpopcorn.com/popcorn/?p=798#more-798

It seems nowadays actionmeister Steven Seagal is more into his growing folk music exploits than relaunching his action star status. There have been a few recent DTV efforts which had promise, but I don’t think Ol’ Sensei Steven is anywhere near his theatrical peak of “Under Siege” or even “Out For Justice” for that matter. That said, for a DTV release, his latest, ‘Mercenary For Justice” offers some things that Seagal fans have sorely missed: the good natured back to basics where you get a good share of back and neck breakings, the hand/wrist twists, an actual Akido flip! For once Seagal doesn’t totally rely on a stand in and shaky close ups. Another step in the right direction is the tanks, RV’s and cars that are photographed getting blown up very nicely. There is also a noticable fight with Seagal’s character John Seeger and a CIA thug in the men’s bathroom of an upscale dinner club-resteruant. Again, a shadow of the old school days when, Seagal’s characters would almost never break a sweat in disarming an attacker or breaking the arm of said attacker.
But, alas, let’s not get our hopes up too much. Seeger, a freelance merc for hire, is introduced by being involved with other mercs who, in order to “ensure” the escape he hostile war between the French and the Angolians (!) have kidnapped the French Ambassador and his family. The French military orders thier boys to not shoot at the renegade mercs, but shoot they do, and they knock off the French Ambassador and the next of kin with a grenade launcher. Seeger’s best bud gets killed in the crosshairs, and then quits…but not before going back to the US and ‘looking after’ his buddy’s widow and son. Those dirty old renegades from the CIA hold the late buddy’s family and will kill them unless Seeger does one more mission with the bad merc team. What ensues is a slightly confusing (and shamelessly unbelievable) plot of who is doing what and to who. Is the mission going to hack into a bank and mess up the payoffs to varied crooked Greek drug dealer and setup the bad renegade CIA honchos? Or is it an extraction of the dealer’s son from a prison?

This marks the third time where I have noticed an actor or low tier action star be opposite or appearing in a movie with Seagal, and the two hardly so much as exchange punches. In this case, it is Luke Goss, best known for ‘Blade II’ and that silly yarn ‘Silverhawk’. Still, after going against Wesley Snipes, then Michelle Yeoh…only to be underused in a Seagal flick is not good. Goss has presence, he should not be wasted away like this. But what irritated me more was that this was the second time I seen a Seagal flick where he actually kills innocent people- just doing thier jobs. In “On Deadly Ground” there were a bunch of oil workers who did not know that thier boss was a murderer. In order to get to some bad guys, Seagal has to knock off some of these people, In this movie, the innocent people knocked off are those who work in the bank or work for the French police. The French guys, it is esablished, are on the side of the ‘good guys’ although they don’t know it. Yes, I was pissed. I was extremely pissed. It’s one thing if Seagal makes pix where you know the baddies picked the wrong guy to mess with; it’s another story when the security guys at the bank are shot in the head and chest by the protagonists. Or the good cops/agents are blown up by a grenade tossed by Seeger.

Once Goss is out of the picture, though, comes more plot absurdity. The remaining baddies, knowing full well that Seeger has made moves of his own, don’t simply off or maim the hostages. They just move them to another location while planning to kill Seeger and his friends when they show up at the previous hostage location. There is not a lot of good action here in the last fifteen minutes, it is just routine and by the numbers. At least we got some cars blowing up, and one Seagal flip onscreen. We actually needed more of the latter and not the former. The loose ends coda is simply fifteen minutes of yawns. Don E. FauntLeRoy, who also directed Seagal in ‘Today You Die’, also has an early fascination with camera shutter techinques used in ‘Black Hawk Down’ and ‘Saving Private Ryan’. It’s nice to homage or be inspired, it is another trying to jump on the bandwagon that has already left.

My Mercenary For Justice Review!!

Let me just say this, I have been dissapointed with every Seagal DTV release with an exception for Into The Sun, but Mercenary For Jusitce has really pleased me. At first I wasn't too excited about this film at all, but when I saw the custom trailers for Mercenary For Justice I said to myself, wow this film looks very promising. Those short brilliant hand to hand combat fight scenes were incredible, even though they lasted less then a couple minutes, they made you leave with a feeling of estatic and amazement. For the people bashing Seagal's weight constantly, can you believe how fast he STILL moves. Anyway I popped in this DTV release and I was so excited to watch it. As a matter of fact when it was released the 18th, after my half day schedule from school I went to Tower Records which was selling it for $25 and I didn't have the money, so I drove another 10 miles to my nearest Best Buy and purchased it for $19.99. In the end this film really lived up to my expectations, did it have some flaws, ofcourse as with every Seagal movie, but this had to be the best produced, directed DTV Seagal film so far.

Plot:
I really enjoyed this plot, it was fun, exciting, captivating, and it was pure energy. I really like the idea of Seagal a mercenary being blackmailed, the fact that he was blacmailed and set up turned the story totally around from a boring action war movie to a new twist of revenge and honor of a lost friend during the account. I love the location, South Africa. The film looked so bright and exciting, every seen had it's own character and that was never dull or boring. Personally I think this is one of the best Seagal plots for a DTV release film since Belly Of The Beast and Into The Sun. I must admit the first time I watched it I was a little confused but when I popped it in for the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th time since it was so great, I quickly caught on the deception themed plot. In conclusion the plot was very energetic and exciting. This plot gave the viewer much more adrenline then Seagal's previous DTV film. This film was well written and you could tell it was done much more highley on a professional level with the writing, directing, and producing.

Acting:
The acting for a B DTV release movie was not bad. It actually was more on the good end but none the less had alot of corny acting at the same time. I believe the acting was much better then Black Dawn, Today You Die, and alot of his other DTV releases. In the movie you could tell who were the professional actors and who were the B movie rookie actors. One of the worst actors in the movie had to be Bulldog, his voice just sounded so unnatural and I thought his acting was just to stiff and hard like a rock then again the director maybe wanted him to act like that to fit his character. Seagal's acting however I really liked. It was much better then his cliche short line roles that he pursued in Today You Die, Black Dawn, and Submerged. There were alot of classic Seagal one liners that put a smile on my face and say man I love this guy, the same way I felt when I first watched his classic Golden Age films such as ATL, MFD, OFJ, etc... I loved the moments when we had those great Seagal lines and tough guy attitude especially when he said the line, " I'm going to shove this .45 up your ass and then break every bone in your body." Man that took me back to the good old Seagal days which was great to see again. In conclusion the acting was well balanced between a professional and very poor B leveled movie level. Some of the actors were very professional like the young boy's mom who got kidnapped, she was a great professional actor, the but some actors were terrible like the French Ambassador and his mades, when the kidnappers pointed their guns at them they had no expression at all which would be rediculous if you ever had a gun pointed to your face. So in the end it was even with some bad acting as well with some very professional acting. But overall as a whole the acting was far more better then Seagal's previous DTV releases.

Action:
I would understand if people complained about the action in Submerged, Black Dawn, andOut Of Reach, but the action in this DVD was teriffic! Yes there were only a couple hand to hand combat scenes, at a roughly estimate maybe 4-6 small hand to hand combat fight scenes, but man the quality of them was superb! Anyone who does not agree must go watch those fight scenes from a Martial Artists perspective. The moves he performed in this DTV release were outstanding classic Seagal material. I loved every minute of the hand to hand combat scenes. From the short scene when Seagal was sitting down at the meeting room table and one of the guys tried to punch him and Seagal gets him in a thumb lock then applys a pressure point to the neck, that was classic Seagal we haven't seen since Fire Down Below. Then the bathroom fight scene against the wrestler, wow that was breathtaking. His hands are so fast and for someone overweight, he moves like a lightweight. I love that street lethal Aikido Seagal shows. These fight scenes can be easily compared to Under Siege 2 they were that good. In addition I loved seeing Seagal perform great waza techniques and kotegaeshi's in the film as well. Alot of joint locks, finger locks, choke holds, which brought back the classic Seagal we once or should I say still know judging from the fight scenes in this film.
Also the opening war zone scene was great, very action packed and realistic. They did put alot of effort in this film as they stated they analyzed Saving Private Ryan and Black Hawk Down war scenes and incorporated them into this film to bring realism. I loved the action scenes, every scene from the opening war scene, to the gun fights, to the Seagal hand to hand combat fight scenes. Action wise this is his most pleasing movie, in my opinion these action and fight scenes were better then Into The Sun and it is the best fight scenes we have seen since Fire Down Below.

Appearence:
Yes Seagal is aging but for some reason he looked better then he did in this film then he did in Black Dawn, Today You Die, and Submerged. I think they applyed more heavily make up on him and he got more of a tan since he was filming in South Africa. Yes we all know he is older now and overweight but he didn't look half bad at all in this film. I liked to see him in his trademark long black leather jacket and black jeans, I was happy to see that. So I was not bothered that much with Seagal's appearence in the film as I was with Belly Of The Beast and Submerged, his make up team made him look much better in this film which was great.

Dubbing:
I was afraid when I heard of the other members early reviews of MFJ that there was dubbing in the movie but those members took it out of proportion. There were maxinum 4 SMALL scenes where Seagal's voice was dubbed, and they all were short one lined words. The dubbing was so small in this film it didn't bother me at all! There was much more dubbing in Today You Die, Submerged, and Out Of Reach then there was in MFJ. The dubbing was so small it didn't bother me at all due to the fact the great story line and action made up for that. But the dubbing was very small and insubstantiall it really didn't hinder the film what so ever.

Doubles:
There were absolutley no stunt doubles at all during the Seagal fight scenes which was great. Seagal performed the most quality fight scenes we have seen yet in a DTV release DVD with no doubles doing them which was great. The only one double I spotted was when Seagal jumped over the wall, which you probably wouldn't have spotted at all if you weren't analyzing the film bit to bit like me. So the doubles I was pleased with since there were none at all which was fantastic! Seagal doing his own fighting! Just like it should be!

Special Features:
They were good. Seagal was on there for a short period of time but I liked the special features much better then the ones on Black Dawn. With the special features it proved to you that the people working on the film spent much more time, money, and effort then they have on Seagal's previous DTV releases, so I was pleased. I was also pleased to learn that they wanted to bring a big guy to challenge Seagal in the fight scene, and I liked the fact that they brought in a wrestler to fight Seagal and Seagal made the fight scenes more realistic to prove to the public that in order to be a good Martial Artist, size does not matter in a fight.

Conclusion:
I loved this movie! I already watched it 4 times it was so great. I have seen every Seagal movie to date and I have to say this is his BEST dtv release. I think Belly Of The Beast had the best over all plot but due to the fact that there were so many obvious doubles in the fight scenes I don't understand how you guys can enjoy that film. Back to MFJ, this is his most pleasing film to date. I loved the fight scenes, the energy of the film, I liked Seagal's co stars, and I liked those classic one liners that Seagal said. This film is very enjoyable and it is not boring. I am confident that Seagal's films will only get better from here. I have a feeling Seagal has took the time to reflect on his recent DTV and he is ashamed and he doesn't have that much time left in the action buisness due to his aging so I think the quality will increase so he can end his career on a strong note, possibley a future theatrical release. This is a DTV film I can watch over and over again which is very rare considering his recent DTV releases. I feel this is better then Into The Sun as a whole film overall. In conclusion I give this film a very strong 3.5 out of 5 stars!

There are already two reviews on imdb.

REVIEW 1: POSITIVE

"First of all there was very little voice dubbing (sounded like JR ewing) and minimal doubles which was a suprise, loads of action but mostly gun fire with a few Seagal close combat scenes (toilet scene was comical). First war scene could have been stretched on for longer (see silly Seagal double run for to the chopper) and the ending could have had more hand to hand combat scenes instead of a rushed one.

Get rid of the silly dubbing/thin double and he could make some sort of come back."

REVIEW 2: NEGATIVE

"Did we see the same movie, mate?

Because IT REALLY SUCKED ASS!

First of all the war part was terrible, okay there were some shots that were nice but it just looked like an mid '80's acrion movie with guys falling down, bad explosions, massive unrealistic guns use, terrible special effects etc
The French Foreign Legion don't use russian T type tanks at all ( it's a para regiment no place for battletanks)

Second the whole USA part was *beep* very cheap on all fronts from acting to scenery.

And third the prison part was agian, same as the war part, TERRIBLE. Guys just walking blazing guns truw a high security prison. A water pipe right to the prison with only one little steel plate keeping people from getting in. Guards with anti tank weapons? What is next, minefields around civillian prisons? When the merc's enterd that church they were testing AK's, M60's and grenades. When they raided the prison they all got MP5's. What about that?

I've seen a lot of bad Seagal movies the past year('s) but this one is beating them at every point. What a wasted of a good action star.
Seagal should take his money and go on a nice retirement some were in Europe (he seems to like it over here)."

I am not sure you watched the right film if you think this is worse then Today You Die, Submerged, and Black Dawn. Did you see those fight scenes?
