LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Comedian Rodney Dangerfield was moved from a hospital's intensive care unit to a private room Friday as part of his continued recovery from brain surgery last week.

His publicist, Kevin Sasaki, characterized the move as an indication that the 81-year-old star of "Easy Money" and "Back to School" was "out of the woods."

Sasaki described Dangerfield as "always the clown and feeling like his old self."

"Dangerfield is up and walking and looking younger and more rested than ever," Sasaki said in a statement. "He is even talking about throwing a celebratory party in his room, where his wife, Joan, has been staying through the week."

Dangerfield may be allowed to go home in the next few days if he continues to recover, Sasaki added.

The bug-eyed, tie-tugging comedian -- known for his self-mocking jokes about getting "no respect" -- has been at the University of California, Los Angeles, Medical Center since undergoing 12-hour brain surgery on April 8.

The procedure was designed to improve his blood flow for an upcoming heart valve replacement, tentatively planned for late May.

Sasaki said well-wishers and fans can send Dangerfield greetings at his Web site, www.rodney.com.
