Seagal's Aikido style???

Seagal Shihan is a 7th Dan, Aikikai. He does not have a "style" per se, only a methodology. He has said "There is only one Aikido, O'Sensei's Aikido!"

But he falls under Aikikai, which is an umbrella for many orginazations. It should also be noted that Seagal Shihan does not recognize, or endorse any Aikido orginazation other than the Aikikai.

Yes, we can call it the traditional Akido and traditional AIki-jutsu, how Seagal´s said:Aikido is not a game, is BUDO(The art of war), BUT...don´t forget that in his movies except Nico¨Above The Law¨ he mixed karate an kung-fu(Wing-Tsun concept)with sel-defense techniques and in his latest a bit of Aikido(Sankyo, Kokyunages)with punches and kickings sometimes in a ¨supernatural¨way:
For example, When in ¨The Patriot¨he punchs in the stomach to a bigger man than him and brokes the wall, or ¨Fire Down Below¨when he brokes jaws, fight against five in 3 seconds and make K.O. to everyone that he beats. It isn´t Aikido, it is to be Superman V

Ok Latino, but not sure what his movies have to do with his way of doing Aikido. When he does Aikido "for real" and not movie stuff, it is pretty impressive.

Sure...When was the last time you see him does Aikido¨for real¨ and not movie stuff?Tell me, have you took a seminar with him, maybe?Because it isn´t Aikido¨for real¨.
Or you have been seen fighting him against 5¨for real¨in the last months alone without his 7 bodyguards?

Steven ONLY shows his¨Aikido violence violent¨in his first 4 movies. The rest isn´t pretty impressive, pretty impressive is HIMSELF, that it´s a very talented man.

Take care

Seagal sensei received his shodan from Koichi Tohei before going to Japan. I don't know if Tohei had resigned from the aikikai at that time or if it was after. His remaining ranks were from the aikikai. The aikikai is more of an umbrella organization with many different shihan who have slightly different styles. Seagal to my understanding trained with Abe sensei (10th dan verbal). Suffice it to say his shodan was close enough around the split time frame that Tohei's aikido was pretty much aikikai since he was the chief instructor up to about 1972 I believe.

First of all, I love the movie mixed Aikido in his movies, that´s why I decided to learn this martial art.
And the second at last:I´m sure what I´m talking about when I post things such as this.I don´t want to offense you.
I have trained with several Aikido Senseis, actually my master(I trained 5 days a week two and a half hours)is 6ºDAN Aikikai Tomás Sánchez, received by Shihan Nobuyoshi Tamura 8ºDAN(DIRECT PUPIL-UCHIDESHI FROM O´SENSEI), and I have took many seminars with several 7thDAN pupils of Shihan Tamura(The last Claude Pellerin 7ºDAN)and with TAMURA himself and YAMADA(8thDAN Aikikai too), the next seminar of them will be in March.

If you want go to an 8thDAN seminar and learn, don´t be fanatic.

I post you the information if you want to go.The Aikido of TAMURA is the Aikido of O´SENSEI.Steven is cool, really cool. But he isn´t TAMURA and the Aikikai gaves him, with the now death DOSHU KISHOMARU UESHIBA the 7thDAN for the important diffusion that Steven made of Aikido in his movies, but know it´s different.
He is not TAMURA, TAMURA could be his master, not viceversa.
TAMURA is the official AIKIKAI representant in the WHOLE EUROPE.And I study his method, the O´Sensei method.

Please, here you have the 3days seminar information

Pitts,

Hapkido might be an option, it is Korean however it is very similar. Aikijujutsu is another option if it is in your area, just becareful of what some call Aikijujutsu. If it is not Daito Ryu then I would seriously question it. Anyway, those are similar arts, however judo and jujutsu are good alternatives as well, depending on what you want out of your art!!!!

Yes, tenshinaikidoka is right, it´s very complete and works well for self-defense.

Anyone interested in his style should watch: "The Path Beyond Thought" to learn a bit more about his aikido, or even better take a couple of classes at one of his schools.
From my own experience, Take Sensei's aikido is very technical and without a doubt practical for real life confrontations. His aikido eliminates all the hocus pocus and bologny that we unfortunately see in many martial schools today.

Hello TenshinWarrior, I think that almost everybody in this site has a copy of The Path Beyond Thought.I love the video, I´ve watched dozens of times and it´s cool.I really would like to took lessons of Take Sensei in his 80´s and earlier 90´s times. The only thing I miss in the video are more and bigger Ukes, not only 5´3´´Matsuoka and his pupils talking, I mean 6´4´´ or 6´5´´guys like him, to see how was the work he did.

I am 6'7", and it is easy for bigger guys to do virtually any technique against smaller ukes. But there are some things that do not work against bigger opponents, like irimi nage for example. I had someone try to do that to me during randori, and well, he only hit my chest, I looked at him, and all he could say was "well, that was stupid". Anyway, I think it would be interesting to see what he would do against bigger folk. But, I think yubi dori works on most!!

Oh my God, 6´7´´!!!, Seagal is 6´5´´!!!

That yubi dori works on most!!With you works everything, also the sight from your highs must be killer!!

It doesn't measure up to a rival as you, or really difficult...Well, maybe I can beat hard your balls!!!

6´7´´!!!

LOL, 6'7"!!! Holy crap, and I thought Take Sensei was big..
I'm just really impressed about how fast he moves too..I mean you'd think that a taller, bigger size guy would take longer to perform techniques, but damn! he's superfast.

Of course he is, that´s why he is the ActionSuperstar Steven Seagal, superfast, super direct and hard fighting, super attractive, super weakness, etc,etc...If not he will be another normal human, and we will be talking in a heat thread of a Sharon Stone unnofficial page.

Of curse iriminage works on taller guys!
Don't you ever train hanmi hantachi waza (nage sit - uke stands) iriminage? Then you can talk about taller ukes!
So what is the trick?
You have to take uke down to your level. Then you can throw!
The problem is if you try to do iriminage "cloth-line" style á la Seagal. It can be done, but one then has to take uke down to your level before cloth-lineing!

Yes, you´re right, but I haven´t level enough to do it well.In HanmiHandachiwaza I jumps to his neck and, while rounding, I let fall my weight, then the bigger one can crash to the floor, but if I use only my strenght, baaaaaaaaaad
To be a good Aikidoka is really difficult to me

I was not refering to suwari waza. Realistically, I could not see how irimi nage would work on someone, say my size if someone, say 5'10" tried to execute it. Not saying it can't be done, but there are other, better options.

Goodness, not trying to start a technique war!!!!

Sorry, also not talking about hamni hadachi either. I train that way alot and would never use that technique while in the seated position and someone was attacking me standing, unless it was for demonstration purposes.

I must respectfully disagree on this one, I do not see how iriminage would work in an actual confrontation if there is a signifigant size difference (meaning the defender was shorter than attacker).

I have seen it done however, in the dojo, but that is a case of a good uke/nage relationship and not real life. Again, not trying to start a p*ssing war here, just stating my experience.

I've done sokumen iriminage with someone 6'11" - I'm 5'7". I had to jump / bounce up, actually, to meet him - and he went down like a ton of bricks; timing is everything....
