A four-acre masterpiece

Four of the most fascinating acres at Biltmore Estate are all under one roof. America's largest home boasts 250 rooms, 65 fireplaces, an indoor pool, bowling alley, priceless art and antiques.

The splendid treasures of America's largest home

Thousands of original furnishings. Comforts and technologies that were virtually unknown back in 1895. Original art from masters such as Renoir. Magnificent 16th-century tapestries. More than 40 bronze sculptures. Curiosities collected from George Vanderbilt's excursions to Europe, Asia, and Africa. Napoleon's chess set. A library with 10,000 volumes. A Banquet Hall with a 70-foot ceiling. Fascinating kitchens and remarkable recreational areas. Room after room of art, history, and luxury.

The sheer scale of Biltmore House is almost overwhelming, yet it feels surprisingly welcoming and comfortable. After all, these amazing four acres of floor space were designed not as a museum but as a family home and country retreat. To this day, it is still the largest privately owned home in America, and it remains one of the most engaging portraits of 19th-century life ever created.

George Vanderbilt named Biltmore Estate by combining two words: "Bildt," the region in Holland where the Vanderbilt family originated, and "more," an old English word meaning upland rolling hills. For more than a century, visitors have been fascinated by this remarkable place. Here are some of their questions:

They offer a Candle Light Christmas tour, that is out of this world! In each room they have Christmas Tree's with offering a different theme!

You're on location when you visit our estate.

Biltmore Estate is a one-of-a-kind location that has attracted the attention of film directors for nearly six decades. Numerous movies have been shot using our house, gardens, and grounds. Here are some you should recognize:

Tap Roots, 1948

Starring Van Heflin and Susan Hayward, this serious yet romantic Civil War tale features Biltmore House and grounds footage.

The Swan, 1956

A commoner courts a princess, promised to a prince. Grace Kelly, Louis Jordan, Alec Guinness, and Agnes Moorehead star in this movie using extensive footage of Biltmore House and grounds.

Production shot from My Fellow Americans, 1996
Being There, 1979

Peter Sellers stars as a simple-minded gardener who rises to great political heights by watching TV. Also featuring Shirley Maclaine and Jack Warden, the movie includes footage of Biltmore House, grounds, and gardens.

The Private Eyes, 1980

Tim Conway and Don Knotts spoof Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson in a film that features footage of Biltmore House and grounds.

Mr. Destiny, 1990

Jim Belushi plays a man down on his luck until Michael Caine offers him the chance to relive a moment in time, and create a different life. The movie uses footage of Biltmore House.

The Last of the Mohicans, 1992

Daniel Day-Lewis and Madeleine Stowe star in the remake of James Fenimore Cooper's novel on colonial America. This romantic tale features grounds footage.

Forrest Gump, 1994 Tom Hanks plays the mild-mannered, southern man who accidentally alters history with his life. Footage from the estate's corn fields and Lagoon are used to create Gump's cross country run.

Richie Rich, 1994

The comic book billionaire comes to life in the film that features Macaulay Culkin and John Larroquette. Biltmore House becomes the "Rich Manor" for the film.

Production shot from Patch Adams, 1998
My Fellow Americans, 1996

Jack Lemmon, James Garner, and Dan Akroyd star in this political comedy. Biltmore Estate served as the location for the farmhouse, campground, and most of the White House scenes.

Patch Adams, 1998

A comedy about an unconventional doctor played by Robin Williams. Cabin footage and other scenes filmed on Biltmore Estate.

Hannibal, 2000

Anthony Hopkins and Julianne Moore star in the sequel to the psychological thriller Silence of the Lambs. Biltmore Estate served as the home of lead character Mason Verger. Scenes from the Sardinian barn were also shot on the estate.

The Clearing, 2002
Robert Redford, Helen Mirren and Willem Dafoe star in this movie about a man who is kidnapped and held for ransom while his wife tries to secure his release. Part of Biltmore Estate's forest was used in the production.

Nice idea for a thread, Lollipop. :) I enjoyed reading about the info about the Biltmore estate. I've seen several different specials on it on TV, but have yet to visit it. I've also seen Christmas specials that included the Biltmore, and it looked beautifully decorated, but I'm sure TV can't begin to do it justice. And that was interesting about the different movies associated with it! :) I hadn't realized that about most of them.

I have an idea for a couple spots in Michigan for this thread--but will have to come back later, when I have more time. :D

Busch Gardens Williamsburg VA, Usa

This suspended roller coaster flies through a recreated Bavarian village at speeds approaching 50 mph. The "Wolf" rambles through natural terrain and dense forest, suddenly dropping a sheer 99 feet to nearly skim the Rhine River below. The spirit of the wolf is present at every turn, from the distant howls at the boarding station to the authentically-detailed buildings.

I LOVE roller coasters! Haven't been on a good roller coaster since visiting Canada's Wonderland in 1990, though. Well, except for the roller coaster in the West Edmonton Mall (the one where four people were killed when the car left the tracks).

I LOVE them too!! It is such a thrill!! My second favorite is when a plane takes off if you lean back and close your eyes you can feel the wheels leave the runway!!

I was thinking more along the lines of "I love...little baby ducks...old pickup trucks...slow moving trains...and rain...."

Hey Lollipop...Mr. Soul and I saw the Biltmore estate while on our honeymoon. We were there in spring when everything was blooming!

Other favorites...Mammoth Cave, cornfields in the sunshine, black and white movies, muscle cars, red-tailed hawks, bullfighters (OK, their tight little pants), ruby slippers, blue jeans, daisies, silver maple trees, big old barns, porch swings, swords, good wine, rock-n-roll, cereal, incense, good books, old graveyards, tiger lilies, and good sheets...like 500 thread count.
