Steven Seagal training Anderson Silva Video

I looked around and didn't see this posted yet so I figured I'd throw it up here. It's video of Segal showing some Aikido to Anderson Silva (UFC) in preparation for his fight with Chael Sonen (MMA).

I found it particularly interesting as I train in Hakko-Ryu Aikijujutsu (Daito-Ryu derivative) and we've been adapting some of our techniques to respond to standard "MMA" attacks for a bit of fun.

If you're not aware, MMA rules don't allow for small joint manipulation so that limits the effectiveness of Aikido in a cage.

I've always been a big fan of Seagal's Aikido and it's nice to see him imparting some knowledge. It will be interesting to see if Anderson applies any of it in his fight.

I think one of the more interesting parts is at the 4:00 minute mark. It's dark so I can't see well but it looks like he takes Silva down with kotegaeshi. One of the big criticisms I hear about the Aiki arts is that the techniques can't be performed if a person doesn't throw a "zombie" bunch and then leave their arm out.

You'll notice that Silva punches and snaps it right back in pretty quickly. Despite that, Seagal has no problem getting a hold of it easily.

He was also focusing a lot on the shuto strike to the neck (knife hand). I think this is interesting as well as if it is performed correctly it can easily be a knock out blow. I can attest for this first-hand as I've been sent face first into the dojo floor.

Ryan of Yamaguhi,
Steven Seagal's martial arts display looks pretty effective in the cage/ring or street or anywhere for that matter ;) Thanks for sharing this YouTube clip

he looks good but he has to lose more pounds to become a believable action star once again

Disagreed. There's too many muscle-bound actors out there, way too many, and they are boring. Sorry ofam

It's great to see something positive about Steven in the Media. I wish he could lose some weight for health reasons but then again don't we all.

I think what we miss out on is that if Steven Seagal was muscle-bound, he couldn't do aikido effectively for us on the screen. I may be wrong? What say ye?

Nobody is saying Seagal should be muscular. He should however lose some weight just for health reasons.

Obese people have more chance of having a heart attack, becoming diabetes etc.

It's unreasonable to think he can go back to the shape he was in in Above The Law or Under Siege, but the shape he was in in Exit Wounds would fit him very good. And it would raise his believabillity in major action roles (special forces, secret agent etc.).

And don't forget Seagal is really tall, and for a tall man to go fat takes more then a little man to go fat.

Peace

Hi all,
This is also my opinion. The figure of Exit Wounds would fit very well to him.
It is not to be had healthy so much in weight. Is also injurious to his joints.
But as in the video was to be seen, he is still very quick and in spite of the overweight well in form.

That would be great for him to train rather rather giving people advice.

I agree that Seagal needs to lose some weight, but I could honestly care less if he does another movie. I've watched his recent movies, but I never find myself going back and watching them over and over like his earlier films.

Obviously putting out DTV movies keeps his bank account healthy so he can maintain his lifestyle. However, I would like to see him just walk away and go back to his Aikido roots and teach full-time. I would most certainly pay to attend a seminar.

All the people I know who've attended seminars with him in the 90s said it was very disappointing and not worth anything. The guy sure have the knowledge and techniques but he doesn't have the spirit of Aïkido as taught by Ueshiba Sensei.

Strange, I've spoke several people who attended the Paris seminar. They were very impressed by his teachings and would gladly pay a lot of money for a new seminar.

Thanks for sharing the video here, nice to see him out there giving advice and good techniques. For sure I'd like to see him doing a seminar.

On the case of physical health, of course everybody needs to manage and control their weight for good health. It's just in this case with Mr Seagal, people use it as a excuse to criticise his work and his talent rather than just concern for his wellbeing.

Ryan,
see thats what sucks about MMA, they wanna call it ultimate fighting, but they won't allow for joint manipulation. I find that very disturbing and discriminating inside a ring or cagematch. One can beat the other person to a bloody-pulp, but one can't manipulate a tendon, ligament, and joint to the 'point of tapping out', whats up with that?
