Steven's Tai Chi, Karate?

I am liking Steven's ability. I saw recently that he attacked a villain in his latest movie by attacking him. The villain is having no chance. I am not knowing steven's martial art so please excuse my mistaking if indeed i am wrong but his karate is nice. I am wanting to learn this also but cannot due to the fact that I am against violence. To be able to disarm someone with a karate chop would be nice!

From what I know, Steven's main martial art that he focused on is Aikido. He also learned Karate and some other martial arts, mainly of Japanese origin and some Chinese styles.

You should also consider though, that the fighting techniques used in movies are choreographed, meaning, well planned to look strong and effective.

He has trained and studied Aikido, Judo and Karate!!! The other chinese influenced martial arts you see in his movies are the product of fight choreographers not Seagal Shihan!!! Hope that helps!!!

Tenshin, is this a fact or supposition? :yin: The only film I'm aware of that had a sole martial arts practitioner choreographying for Steven Seagal on-set was Dion Lam in Exit Wounds

This is fact. He has choreographers for most of his films, and they have inlfuence in certain aspects of fight scenes. Not saying that they soley direct the fighting scenes, but add thier flavor along with what Seagal Shihan already does. If you notice, in his earlier films, the fight scenes are very much Aikido, then around Exit Wounds different fight choreographers started using wire work and different moves. His more recent films (besides I would say Into The Sun) several differnt moves had been introduced. Because of this people think he studied some chinese things, which is not the case, he just was shown moves by the choreographer and they used it for the movie. I beleive (and this may not be the case but...) this has been done to try and keep the movies fresh and not having people see the same thing over and over.

I know that in Belly of the Beast he was doing Baguazhang and Taijiquan, so did he choreograph that stuff himself or did he have help? In the Under Siege movies he uses Kali in each film's climatic fight scenes, and both Guru Dan Inosanto and Jeff Imada have appeared in his films, so I would not be surprised if they helped him out with choreography. In Out for Justice, for instace, in the famous bar fight with "Sticks," Seagal just stands there and does one of the most basic Kali practice moves there is, while Guru Dan Inosanto (Bruce Lee's best friend and protege) provides the actual moves for the fight.

Thank you Zhuan, but is your reply factual concerning Sensei Seagal's extensive skill with baguazhang, hsing i chaun, and taijiquan?
How did you learn of Sensei Seagal's martial trainings with the "Elite Bodyguard Systems" of Tai Chi Chuan, Pakua Chang, and XingYiQuan?
Alongside Aikido's creation, it is factual in Chinese martial arts books that these 3 aforementioned martial arts are the highest forms in martial arts both defensive and combative

The moves in Under Seige that you are stating are Kali are in fact also found in Aikido. In regards to Belly of The Beast, that movie was choreographed and not by Seagal (although i am sure he, as always, had his input).

i just read that seagal incorporated kenjutsu blocking and deflection in to his aikido so maybe what we are seeing are sword cutting and blocking techniques applied to punches and strikes

LOL. I did not say that Seagal is knowledgeable in Baguazhang (Pa Kau) or in Taijiquan (Tai Chi). What I said is that he was doing some of these arts in Belly of the Beast. These fights were not choreographed by him. This has, by the way, been discussed on this site before. See the following link for instance:

LOL ok ok gotcha....sorry for the mix up. Some people however, do think that when they see him do something in his movies, well he MUST have studied it. And that is certainly not the case. But again, sorry for that mix up and yes, thank you for the clarification!!!
