'Tarzan' Star Gordon Scott Dies
Portrayed Classic Jungle Hero in the 1950s Films
AP
BALTIMORE (May 3) - Gordon Scott, a handsome, muscular actor who portrayed an "intelligent and nice" Tarzan in 1950s movies, has died. He was 80.

Scott, who had been living in a working class section of south Baltimore, died Monday at Johns Hopkins Hospital of post-heart surgery complications, a hospital spokesman said.

Scott made 24 movies including "Tarzan and the Lost Safari" (1957), "Tarzan's Fight for Life" (1958), "Tarzan and the Trappers" (1958), "Tarzan's Greatest Adventure" (1959) and "Tarzan the Magnificent" (1960).

The cast in the 1959 movie included Sean Connery and Anthony Quayle.
Tarzan, the vine-swinging hero of the jungle, was created by the author Edgar Rice Burroughs. Scott was among a long line of actors, including Johnny Weissmuller, Elmo Lincoln and Larry "Buster" Crabbe, who portrayed him.

"He was an absolutely wonderful Tarzan who played the character as an intelligent and nice man who carried himself well, much as my grandfather had originally written it," Danton Burroughs told The (Baltimore) Sun.

Scott was a lifeguard at the Sahara Hotel in Las Vegas when he was discovered by Hollywood producer Sol Lesser, said Scott's brother Rayfield Werschkull of Portland, Ore.

He was signed to a seven-year-contract after he outperformed 200 other international candidates.

During the 1954 production of his first film, "Tarzan's Hidden Jungle," he fell in love with co-star Vera Miles. The couple married that year and divorced four years later.

After the Tarzan movies, Scott appeared in Westerns and gladiator films.

Scott's later years were spent in Baltimore, in the row house of Roger and Betty Thomas, who had befriended him.

"My husband has been a fan of his since he was a child. When we were in Hollywood about eight years ago, we looked him up," said Betty Thomas. "We invited him for a visit. He came and never left."

Thomas said she last saw Scott in the hospital on Saturday. She told him, "'Gordon, we love you, and so does the dog and the bird.' He opened one eye for a moment and gave me a wink."

Although some sources said Scott was born in August 1927, his brother told The Sun he was born a year earlier.

I remember the Ron Ely films and of course the Johnny Weismuller films (Saturday morning fare in the 60s and 70s on TV), and I think I saw a couple of the Lex Barker films as well.

I used to have the whole collection of the books by Edgar Rice Burroughs - impossible to find now because they are so politically incorrect I expect all copies of them get burned as soon as they turn up.

Found this at..............

http://www.hollywoodlegends.com/johnny-weissmuller.html

"5 time Olympic gold medalist in swimming, Johnny Weissmuller broke three records at the 1924 Olympics in Paris, and was the world's greatest swimmer after turning professional. He is best known for his role as Tarzan, and though other Tarzans existed before and after Johnny, none were as popular with the movie-going public. Tall and handsome, Johnny was the perfect star of the Depression era, when people needed a hero to look towards for encouragement, and his charm and talent kept him a favorite for many more years to come."

Oh, yeah, baby....

Whatever happened to Ron Ely, anyhow? He seemed to have vanished into the mist after the Tarzan stuff, though I seem to recall seeing him guest on various TV shows.

Tarzan returned to television in 1976 as an animated Saturday morning show (originally titled: Tarzan, Lord of the Jungle). The voice of Tarzan was provided by Robert Ridgely. This series (currently hard to find!) is fondly remembered for its exciting, though limited, rotoscoped animation.
In 1991 Tarzan was back as a live-action adventure series, this time with Wolf Larson in the leading role. Tarzan was portrayed as an environmentalist and a protector of the jungle and its animals. The series had very little going for it but Ron Ely did make a guest appearance as a villain.

Tarzan returned in Tarzan:The Epic Adventures starring Joe Lara as the ape-man. The premiere movie showed some promise - but the series didn't do much for me. The series was more sword & sorcery than ERB and relied too much on magic/hocus-pocus.

Picking up where their feature film left off, Disney's Legend of Tarzan is currently airing weekday afternoons in most markets. The animation is well below the film version, but is enjoyable and it's always nice to have a daily dose of Tarzan.
A lot of info: The Television Series (from 1966 to the present)
The Silent Era: 1918 - 1929
Weismuller Films: 1932 - 1948
Modern Movies: 1933 - present
Miscellany: Books, Radio, Links, etc......
Bomba, the Jungle Boy: Johnny Sheffield
Jungle Jim: Post-Tarzan
