Dear friends

As you know, some days ago I went to Belgrade to visit my teacher and friend Shihan Steven Seagal.
He was in Serbia for the movie set "Order of the Dragon" and as diplomatic and close of the President Aleksandar Vucic, he visited various places in Belgrade.

During one of this visits, he received a very beautiful gift. Indeed, mister Alimpić from the Center for the Development of Aikido in Serbia, asked to mister Đuričić, to make a full set of Aikido weapons.

The creator of these pieces is a passionate local artisan and a master craftsman who wanted to create something truly worthy of a legend like Shihan Seagal. Jo and Bokken were made from two different types of wood, and there is a deep, functional philosophy behind that choice.

One of the bokken is crafted from a single, solid piece of Ipe wood, also known as Brazilian Walnut. Ipe is one of the hardest and most durable woods in the world. It is incredibly dense (heavier than water), up to three times harder than oak, and has a Class A fire rating, the same as steel. This bokken is a true testament to power and endurance, a weapon that is virtually indestructible.

The Laminated Bokken

While the solid Ipe bokken is powerful, its weight and forward balance can be demanding for prolonged training. To solve this, the craftsman created a second, laminated bokken designed to replicate the perfect balance of a true katana. This is the two-toned bokken you saw.

The "spine" of the blade (mune) is made of Hornbeam, a lighter but exceptionally tough wood. The Hornbeam is at its widest at the tip (kissaki) and tapers towards the hilt.

This sophisticated construction deliberately shifts the center of balance back towards the hands. The result is a bokken that feels significantly lighter and more agile, allowing for faster manipulation and reducing fatigue, perfectly simulating the feel of a high-quality katana. It combines the toughness of Hornbeam with the density and impact power of Ipe.

The Jo staff has a similar composite design for a perfect blend of strength and speed. Its core is a square beam of lighter Hornbeam wood. This core is then clad on all four sides with the durable Ipe wood and finally turned on a lathe to be perfectly round.

The result is a jo that is incredibly strong and resistant to impact on the outside, yet remains light and manageable due to its Hornbeam heart.
