Shihan Steven Seagal friendship with Shihan Hiroshi ISOYAMA

Hiroshi ISOYAMA (AMA) was born on January 14, 1937 in Iwama in Ibaraki Prefecture.

Coming from a hostel family, he decided to study martial arts when he was a teenager. Indeed, postwar is a very difficult time for Japan, and all kinds of people pass into the family hostel, including members of the yakuzas!

In order to learn to defend himself, he goes to the dojo of Master UESHIBA, in June 1949. The latter has just opened classes for teens and young Hiroshi, then aged 12, becomes the Founder's student.


The training is hard and rigorous, there are no tatami in the dojo and students, few at that time, have to learn to fall on the wooden floor. After three months he finds himself alone, the teens class disappears but Hiroshi continues to practice with adults.

His training partners are named Morihiro SAITO, Takeo MURATA, Sakae SHIMADA, Sachio YAMANE or Kunio OYAMA.

In 1958, Hiroshi left Iwama to join the Japanese Air Self-Defense Forces (Nihon Koku-Jieitai). He is mobilized to Chitose on the island of Hokkaido. At 21 years old, he begins teaching aikido to members of the US military police, then at the request of the garrison commander, to all members of the Japanese Self-Defense Forces. Many of his military students are physically stronger and taller than him, which forces ISOYAMA Sensei to develop powerful techniques to meet the challenges of his students.

Master ISOYAMA, is one of the few individuals, with Master SAITO among others, to have studied with the Founder during the maturation period of modern aikido. Loyal to the UESHIBA family, he holds important functions in Aikikai and in various organizations, such as the federation Japanese Aikido and the Ministry of Defense.

Shihan 8th dan, Hiroshi ISOYAMA is recognized worldwide for his powerful (sometimes brutal) technique and for his famous over-the-shoulder projections (ganseki otoshi).

In front of Iwama Dojo, now called Ibaraki Shibu Dojo (Ibaraki Branch Dojo). This is O-Sensei's dojo - the dojo where Morihiro Saito Shihan also taught for 33 years.

The Iwama Dojo is a dojo built by the founder of aikido, Morihei Ueshiba, who lived there from 1942 until his death in 1969. It is located in the former town of Iwama and became an important historical location for the development of aikido and "a Mecca to the aikido community."

This dojo is also where Morihiro Saito, one of the founder's closest students, learned and taught aikido from 1946 until 2002 developing what is often referred to as the Iwama Style.

The first part of the shrine building (the Honden or "Okuden" housing the deities of aikido) was completed in late autumn, 1943. The second bigger part (the Haiden) was erected in front of the Honden in 1962. Both parts were renovated by care-taker Morihiro Saito in 2001-2002 with the approval of Döshu Moriteru Ueshiba. This renovation also included a fence set up around the compound, and a stone with the carvings "Aiki Jinja" designed by Seiseki Abe, a master of both calligraphy and Aikido, who was also the calligraphy teacher of Morihei Ueshiba.

Dear friends

This is some old pictures of Shihan Steven Seagal with Doshu Kisshomaru Ueshiba.

(The Doshu was present during the opening of Tenshin Dojo Osaka on February 19th, 1975.
While a bad mouth says Shihan Seagal never had recognition from Aïkikaï, the founder's son himself came for the opening dojo, and meeted him several times during 20 years after !)

Unfortunately, Hiroshi Isoyama Shihan no longer teaches due to his age and health.
Currently, the highest-ranking instructor at the Iwama dojo is Shigemi Inagaki Shihan. ️

About Ishisaka Senseï his best known pupil was Steven Seagal, who began studying under Ishisaka as a teenager in the mid-1960s. A fellow student said "[Seagal] was crazy about Harry Ishisaka." Seagal continued to study at the Orange County Aikikai while making frequent visits to Japan where he studied under other masters, before moving to Japan in March 1973.

Aïkido & Law enforcement

First picture 1955. O Sensei is aged 71 years and Saito Sensei is about 27 years old.. Although the exact location is unknown, it appears as though the event is taking place at a Self-Defense Force facility due to the presence of uniformed observers.

Second picture circa 1990 Los Angeles. As you already know, Shihan Seagal trained and still training Law enforcement around the world.

Aïkido can be very effective in many way. Close space to arrest someone, to immobilize, to put the handcuffs... the security and effective technics in Aïkido were also important for O Senseï !

Today it's a very sad day ...

Kaicho Hatsuo Royama passed away after battling illness for some time, his condition suddenly worsened, and he passed away on Monday, August 3, at 4:48 PM. Throughout his repeated and serious illnesses, he fought with dignity and unwavering strength until the very end.

Hatsuo Royama is a Japanese kyokushin master.
A prominent student of its founder, Mas Oyama. In 2002, he founded the Kyokushin-kan International Karate Organization with the aim of upholding the traditional principles of Kyokushin.

Life and career
Early Kyokushin training: Born on March 31, 1948, Hatsuo Royama started training under Mas Oyama at the Oyama Dojo in 1963 when he was 15 years old. He became closely associated with Oyama throughout the founder's life.

Tournament success:
Royama proved to be a formidable competitor, with career highlights that include:
1973: Champion of the 5th All Japan Open Karate Tournament
1975: Runner-up at the 1st Open Weight World Championship

Master of the low kick: Royama was instrumental in popularizing the devastating low shin kick in Kyokushin. The technique was so strongly associated with him that foreign competitors at early world tournaments would mistakenly call out "Ro kick!" when seeing it.
Founding Kyokushin-kan: Following Mas Oyama's death in 1994, Royama became disillusioned with the Kyokushinkaikan's new leadership, which he felt was prioritizing profit over the "Budo spirit." In 2002, he split from the organization and founded Kyokushin-kan International.
Leader and instructor: Royama was the director (Kancho) of the Kyokushin-kan International until 2022, when he became the honorary director (Kaicho). He continued to teach and train, emphasizing the balance of physical strength, mental discipline, and philosophical aspects of karate....

In Japan in the early 70’s I had gone by the ancient saying to spend more time trying to find the right teacher than the actual training in knowing that finding the right teacher is everything. I was lucky enough to find a few authentic great teachers who were real masters of a mixture of Sword, Jujitsu and Karate. Later on I became good friends with sensei Mas Oyama, who was the founder of Kyokushin Karate and I was very impressed with the realistic battle applications of the style. I had always tried to take the most effective techniques of all the arts that I had studied to combine them into my own style. When Mas Oyama sensei passed away, one of his best students Kancho Hatsuo Royama became his successor and I was very pleased and impressed with his personality, humility, and an amazing drive to keep the technique severe and real. Several years ago Kancho asked me to teach one of his karate master classes in Krasnodar. I accepted and was so happy to begin a closer relationship with him.

Last time I was in Japan, I was lucky enough to spend time with Kancho and was surprised and honored to receive 7th degree black belt from him. It is my hope and prayer that the wisdom of the real masters doesn't disintegrate as time goes on. Even though the martial arts have primarily originated in Asia, they are not just for Asian people and they are for the people of the world. I am hoping that these sacred arts spread throughout the world, inspiring humility, respect, discipline and the desire to help others and make the world a better place.
