The Best Action Movies Period!

I thought I would start this topic to see what members here view as the best action movies ever made. It can be adventure, martial arts, sci-fi, thriller, anything with action elements. Just go for the ones that you would tend to rewatch time and time again.

Here's my list.

* PREDATOR
Probably Schwarzenegger's best film, where he finds himself and his commando buddies, kneedeep in barbaric, dreadlocked, skull collecting alien territory. The best thing about the film is the tension/suspense level, which is consistent throughout the movie, and the eerie jungle setting fuels this spectacularly. Very well done action, in particular, the raid on the camp at the start.

* LETHAL WEAPON
The original and best buddy/buddy cop movie which introduced the inspired pairing of the pychotic Mel Gibson with the stable, ageing Danny Glover. What works so well in this film is the duos' chemistry, where they can bounce off wise cracks yet have depth and make you feel for their characters. The shootouts and fights are well staged, and Gary Busey makes for a suitably disturbed villain.

* GOLDFINGER
Arguably, the best Bond film ever, mainly because it introduced the formulae that we know so well and love about the franchise. The excellent pre-credit teaser, the meglomaniac villain, his OTT henchman, the extravagent sets and the big budget finale. Pure brilliance. It also boasts Sean Connery at his most iconic and also the gadget laden Astin Martin DB5. Oh yeah, and Pussy Galore............

* RAMBO: FIRST BLOOD PART II
It may be looked down upon by critics, but the truth is you would go far to find more kinetic, explosive, cinematic mayhem than in this movie. Stallone is at his monosylibbic best, on a mission to find missing POWs in Vietnam, where he gets captured, tortured via electocution by Steven Berkoff, breaks out, shoots and blows apart anything in sight. Best scene must surely be the demise of the Vietnamise general, who gets blown to pieces by one of John Rambo's explosive tipped arrows.

* DIRTY HARRY
Probably the most influential cop film this side of "Bullitt", where we witness an none more iconic Clint Eastwood mutter the immortal "Do you feel lucky? Well do ya punk?" line. You can trace even the most recent cop film back to this classic and its hateful, pychopathic villain (then fresh) is something of a cliche now. Spawned four sequels, none of them as good as this one. The closest in my opinion being "Sudden Impact".

* TERMINATOR 2 :JUDGEMENT DAY
James Cameron's stylish, effects laden sequel is one of the few times where a sequel has surpassed the original. Sure, the first one may be the critical favourite, but I know myself that this is the more watchable film, mainly because of the excellent, non-stop action which very rarely lets up pace. The bit at the start where Arnie pins a guy to a pool table with a knife has to be seen to be believed and the shootout at Skynet is one of the best showcases for pyrotechnics ever committed to celluliod. Even the morphing effects of the T-1000 would put some of todays shoddy CGI to shame.

* DIE HARD
One of the best pure action films ever made and like all good movies and influenced practically every action film since it was made in 1988. What also appeals about this film is the fact that Bruce Willis is far from invincible and only ever gets away by the skin of his teeth. He racks up quite a few injuries during the film, and it is his vulnerability that sets his hero apart from a lot of the other main characters from action films of that era. Another key element that helps this film immensily is the claustraphobic feel of the sky scraper, which conspires against Willis' character which leaves him in some hairy situations (the fire reel scene). An untouchable classic.

Thats all for now, please add some of your own.

Peace.

Here's my list:

* LETHAL WEAPON - The movie that started the buddy/cop tradition. The first and the best.

* ABOVE THE LAW - I was ten when this film came out. I watched it dozens of times when it came out on video. The action scenes and the Chicago scenery are fantastic. Not forgetting Steven.

* DIRTY HARRY - One of the first movies I saw on video. I was spellbound. Clint Eastwood was awesome and the hard edged action and characters were perfect. There hasn't been a cop movie this good in years.

* TO LIVE AND DIE IN L.A. - Hard boiled cop movie with two Treasury Agents after a counterfeiter who blew the face off a fellow agent. Savage violence and a great car chase in the middle make it worthwhile. Starred a very young William Petersen and a suitably corpse like Willem Dafoe.

* LONE WOLF McQUADE - The first movie I can remember watching on video. I watched it so many times I wore the tape out. Chuck Norris was great when he was on top of his game and this film shows it. Plenty of action and a great score.

* THE TERMINATOR - Classic sci fi action. I was six when I saw the film and after that I wanted to be a terminator. I wore a jacket like Arnold's in the film and I couldn't stop talking about it. To this day I can remember the film like I saw it yesterday.

* COP - Forgotten James Woods thriller about a cop chasing a serial killer. Woods gives a great performance as the over the edge cop. The movie's ending is also fantastic. Sort of a cross between The French Conection and Dirty Harry.

* THE KILLER - John Woo's classic film. What more can I say about this film. The performances are top notch, the action is brilliantly choreographed and it's without doubt Woo's best work in my books.

* HARD BOILED - Another great John Woo shoot 'em up. Tbis time there's not so much character stuff but there's a whole lotta shooting going on. Anyone who hasn't seen this film needs to track it down.

There you go, that's mine.

And here's my list:

* RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK
I stopped breathing about five minutes into the movie and didn't catch my breath until half an hour after I'd left the theatre. I still get thrills every time I see this movie. The other two don't come anywhere near the sheer perfection of this film, alas (although the on-screen chemistry of Ford and Connery in the third offering was delightful, the rest of the film reeked. I don't even want to discuss the second one.). For sheer fun and excitement, this one tops my list of favourites. "It's not the years, it's the mileage" is one of my favourite movie lines, as well.

* THE 5TH ELEMENT
Yeah, yeah, I know. I'm only one of two people in the whole world that actually liked this film (the other was a guy I worked with who hailed from Leeds - that might be significant) but I loved the character Bruce Willis played, and I just like space opera, and this was space opera at its best (or worst, depending on your point of view).

* MAD MAX, ROAD WARRIOR, MAD MAX: BEYOND THUNDERDOME
I liked Road Warrior better than Mad Max, only because I saw it first (alas, the only version of Mad Max I can get my hands on is the dubbed version, and it's excruciating to watch because of the dubbing). Beyond Thunderdome had its moments, as well. As a trilogy, though, the three movies show a progressively disintegrating post-apocalyptic society which captured my interest (as well as the action) and as such, all three hang together very well.

* ALIENS
One of those rare sequels that are as good as or even better than the first. The music alone gives me the cold collywobbles, and no matter how many times I see it, even knowing when and where the nasty is going to pop up, I still jump.

* DIE HARD II
Again, I saw this one before I saw the first one, so I'm more partial to this one as a consequence. Poor Bruce, he always gets so battered... but another reason why I like this film again has to do with the music. I loved hearing "Finlandia" as the background music, not only because I like the piece, but because I played that piece in my high school orchestra. And it fits so well into the action going on on-screen, who'd have thought? I also like the way Bruce's character gets such an unlikely array of allies to help him out. And Bonnie Bedelia zapping the reporter in the can... <TD, chuckling> I could watch this film over and over and never get tired of it.

* ROBIN HOOD
Basil Rathbone and Errol Flynn's swordfight at the end of that film - classic, baby, classic.

* TEENAGED SPACE VAMPIRES
Animated film. A lot better than the title suggests (and, strangely, there aren't actually any teenaged space vampires in the film at all). Fairly brutal in the action department, but a good story, as well. I think it's based on a comic book/graphic novel.

* TERMINATOR II
* LETHAL WEAPON
* DIE HARD

I'm sure I have some more lurking in my back-brain somewhere, but these are enough to be getting on with for the moment.

Some good choices by members. I too would put "The Last Boy Scout" and "Mad Max 2 : The Road Warrior" in my all time best list too.

Here's a few more I would rewatch quite a bit.

* BAD BOYS (1995)
* HARD TARGET (1993)
* IN THE LINE OF FIRE (1993)
* TANGO & CASH (1989)
* GOLDENEYE (1995)
* CLIFFHANGER (1993)
* TOTAL RECALL (1990)
* UNDER SIEGE (1992)
* OUT FOR JUSTICE (1991)

The last two are to keep the purists happy :D .

Peace.

MMCK - good topic. Here are my choices:

Bad Boys - excellent buddy movie and non-stop action right from the start. Can't wait for Bad Boys 2!

The Living Daylights - Just when it looked like it was all over for Bond, Timothy Dalton rescued a franchise which had long gone stale and turned Bond into a credible action hero once again. Easily the hardest Bond in terms of his pure take no sh*t attitude, this film rules from start to finish.

Rush Hour 1 & 2 - Any movie with Jackie Chan is going to be cool, but add a clearly mad black dude to the formula and you have a winner. The dialogue between Chan and Tucker is awesome, especially where Tucker tries to teach Jackie to speak like him or tells him he is going to bitchslap him back to Bangkok!

The Rock - Pure action once more, with possibly one of the best car chases in a movie (between a Hummer, a yellow Ferrari and a bunch of cops). Sean Connery is awesome and Nic Cage is a convincing action hero after years of playing pansies!

Broken Arrow - I love this movie. Travolta rules as the cracked pilot trying to unleash nuclear terror on the US and Christian Slater is cool as the down-to-earth ex friend trying to stop him. Again - non stop action from start to finish.

Heat - Not really an action film per se, but the action scenes (including a massive gunfight on the streets of LA) and the poignant showdown between De Niro and Pacino make this film one of my favourites ever.

Ronin - Another excellent De Niro film which has one of the most amazing car chase sequences ever filmed between a BMW and a Peugeot 405. The impressively large Jean Reno plays a cool character as well.

Passenger 57 - Basically a film which showed the world that Wesley Snipes could kick major ass!

Demolition Man - See above. Add Stallone. Awesome!

Terminator 2 - Judgement Day - Another one of my favourite films of all time and probably the first sequel that was better than the original.

Aliens - This time it's war.

Die Hard - Probably the definitive action movie.

Full Metal Jacket - Another of my favourite movies, this is like 2 films for the price of one, with the blackly comic and disturbing training camp scenes and the bleak reality of the horror of battle.

More to follow later.

Interesting you should mention Passenger 57. I just saw that the other day, and the first thing I thought of was, "they'd better not do Under Seige 3 on an airplane, because this one WAS Under Seige 3".

I REALLY hope they do make Under Seige 3, I really liked the others...
He did a lot of cool stuff and stunts in those...
Of course I guess they had big budgets to work with as well...

wow, these type of threads just keep poppin' up. Oh well I like to express my opinions.

Highlander 1, 2, and 3
Okay I hate four because of Kate...freakin' marlin she was, ugly and horrible actress...3 wasn't too bad, although D an' P are as bad as Rick Berman for originality.
And 2 was good as a seperate movie. Say and it die you limey's! :mad5:

Bond: The Living Daylights
Highly Underated bond film, because it wasn't Connery or Moore. And I guess people didn't like a more serious actor, shakesperian actor wasn't he? oh well, still a good bond movie.
Going down a hill in a chello case! come on that was the best, and he had the best aston, the V8!

Brotherhood of the Wolf
Good Movie! Foreign films Rock!

The Rock
I think it was glimmer who goes on long winded speechs on its goodness so I'll let you read his words.

The Transporter
More Yummy Goodness, Foreign chicks ROCK! :D

Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrells
Okay maybe not alot of action but alot of people die! and its funny as hell...but ya know hell aint funny, okay its as funny as SNL when it was good.

Pirates of the Carribean
Good movie, and Kira Knightly *drools* a wee scottish lass *falls off of chair* Did I mention she's only 18 Schwing.

Thunderheart, The Saint, and Willow
Val kilmers a good actor! I have to see Saltin Seas sometime.

Sniper 1 and 2
Not really action movies, well the first one was a psychological thriller with killing the second had more action with political intrigue.
lol kinda liek foreigner...even took place in the balkins. lol

Storm

Smile dammit!
Predator-Simply awesome action. The whole cast does well, not just Arnie.
Kiss Of The Dragon-The only Jet Li movie i really rate. Great action and a massive letdown later with THE ONE.
Bloodsport-Maybe not realistic like Seagal but great to watch as he dispatches opponents in the tournament.
Highlander-Lambert is a strange looking star but he was born for the role of Connor Macleod. Clancy Brown is great as the Kurgan too and Connery's charm is impeccable.Love it!
Scum-If you've never seen this condemnation of the British borstal system rent it! A very young Ray Winstone is Carling,the hardcase new inmate who fights his way to the top to become "The Daddy". The scenes wwhere he whacks the cons with a snooker ball and does the old "Daddy" and the fight with the black hardnut are classic. Hard.
Goodfellas and Casino. Maybe not action but brilliant and vicious.I love Joe Pesci's roles in both.

Hi Storm.

Some good picks. I also enjoyed "Kiss Of The Dragon" and have recently bought it on DVD. The fight scenes are awesome with Jet Li despatching the bad guys with some excellent, no gimmick martial arts (unlike "Romeo Must Die". I also thought that it had a memorably nasty villain (the same one in "Bad Boys") and Bridgit Fonda made her token damsel in distress role pretty deep, thanks to her acting range. Another cool scene is the unfortunate fat henchman who gets blown in half with the old grenade in a laundry shute trick. LOL

Highlander is also one of my favourites and I consider it to be one of the best and most original films of the 1980's. It has some great flashback sequences to medieval Scotland, good swordfights and a memorable Queen soundtrack. What more couyld you ask.

Peace.
