The Expendables 3

Stallone has now found the director of Expendables 3! He is keeping us all in suspense about who it is though, just saying that after ruling out John Woo because he's busy in China, this newcomer will bring 'freshness, class and much badass'.

Stallone's vision of the next Expendables can be summed up by this tweet:

I absolutely loved the last Rambo film, I think it's one of the greatest action films of all time. It would be great if Stallone were able to bring the same level of violence to the new Expendables film! :D

Is Brian Lynch (who?) the new director!!?

Some tweets of him:

@BrianLynch: Exciting? You're too kind, Sly. I'm just a guy! “@TheSlyStallone: Found an EXCITING director... Things sometimes happen for a Reason..."

@BrianLynch: I can't say if the rumors of me directing THE EXPENDABLES 3 are true, sorry. My director contract says I have to keep it secret.

@BrianLynch: New plan. EXPENDABLES die in first twenty minutes, MacGruber enters! Heh, just kidding Sly (unless you're cool with this)

@BrianLynch: Also @ValEKilmer who reps you, have a part for you in the secret project on working on, as leader of The Anti-Expendables.

@BrianLynch: I will say that when I say down with @TheSlyStallone to talk about SOMETHING I started with "we have to deliver 3 times the fun

2 possibilities: This guy is trolling or he is talking for real.
If you check out this man, the only thing you could find is that he wrote PUSS IN BOOTS.

I doubt that Stallone would pick someone almost completely unknown to direct the next Expendables film although it is possible. Brian Lynch has written a few films and directed one back in 1999, however he has never ventured into action films. Saying that though with Stallone on set he wouldn't be short on advice on how to direct an action film.

I do like the idea of Val Kilmer having a role as one of the bad guys. He's a talented actor whose career could do with a boost from a high profile project like this. Along with Tom Sizemore and Vinnie Jones, the other names who have been mentioned as bad guys, he could make a great adversary.

Lynch also mentions in one of his tweets about filming in 3D. Although I'm not the biggest fan of this format I think it could work with something like this if its done properly. I know it's also a format that Stallone is interested in exploring as he's due to write, direct and star in Hunter, which will be shot in 3D.

The director of Expendables 3 will be...Patrick Hughes the Australian director of 2010s Red Hill. Stallone announced this on twitter tonight after giving a few clues and holding an impromptu competition for his followers to guess the director. Stallone has spoken highly of Hughes and how he shot Red Hill in 20 days on a half a million dollar budget, similar to how Stallone himself shot Rocky:

Stallone also mentions a short film that Hughes has made called Signs which is available to watch on YouTube:

Here is the trailer for Red Hill:

Hughes really has some talent. It's surprising that Sly lets Hughes direct EX3, but I also admire Sly for giving a young new director a chance. A chance he also got when he made Rocky.

Just watched Signs and it's absolutely amazing. So much depth and emotion in a short film, Patrick Hughes has loads of potential, I think Stallone has made the right choice in giving him an opportunity like this.

Love how Sly keeps us updated about Expendables 3, getting so excited for this now.

Would be great for Antonio Banderas to be involved with this he's another star who hasn't had a hit in a while and could do with a boost to his career that this film would give. I also loved him and Stallone in Assassins, which I think is a really underrated film.

It's a TRAVESTY that Seagal hasn't been in either of the first two...Snipes, too...but Seagal is a bigger snub.

Snipes couldn't really take part in the first two films because he was in prison on tax avoidance charges. Seagal however is a different story but I don't think it was as simple as just a snub. Fair enough Avi Lerner probably didn't want to work with Seagal again after he caused problems on a couple of earlier films but equally I don't think Seagal wanted to take part for the same reason.

Latest from Sly on twitter:

Wesley Snipes cannot wait to 'fight to the top again'.

Mickey Rouke is back.

Sly admires The Raid and is thinking of using some stars from that film.

He is currently scouting Eastern Europe and Asia for locations.

Just talked to STEVEN S. in Moscow ...Sounds great and says he wants to be in EX3, if the part fits....

This is really good news, that there is a possibility that Seagal will be appearing in Expendables 3. However it is just a possibility at this time and we as fans shouldn't get carried away or get our hopes up. While it's great that Seagal wants to be in the film Stallone does say it's 'if the part fits'. We know that Stallone is good at tailoring parts to suit different actors so hopefully that won't be a problem. However 'fits' could also mean whether or not it fits in with Seagal's schedule, although again I'm sure this could be worked out.
