To Strike First, Or Wait To Be Striked: The Mere Meaning Of Self-Defense.

Self-defense. What does it mean? According to dictionary.com it means,
Defense of oneself when physically attacked: took a course in self-defense.
Defense of what belongs to oneself, as one's works or reputation.
Law. The right to protect oneself against violence or threatened violence with whatever force or means are reasonably necessary.

But the mere meaning of self-defense has kind of contradicted the true meaning of what self-defense means. Besides the ways of avoiding a confrontation with out the use of phsyical force, how is one to defend himself that has to deal with an actual phsyical confrontation?

The mere meaning of the term self-defense, the majority of the people have perceived it as that we have to wait to be hit first then we have the right to retaliate, but that is not true. If I know you are going to be hit me in the next couple of seconds, I am going to strike you and take you out first. Now don't get me wrong, I don't want people to think that if someone looks at you funny you just punch them out for no reason, but I am saying when someone is in your face and in a verbal prelude to a phsyical attack or fight, we have the right to hit them first. Why wait being hit, the whole meaning of Martial Arts in the "Martial " aspect is to intercept or prevent the attack or damage being inflicted on "you", immobilize the attack before it hits you.

So in conclusion, many people perceive self-defense as have to be waiting to get hit before you are allowed to hit back which in my opinion is not true.

What are your thoughts about this point.

Hello I am new here. Have you seen that video where a guy knocks a pimp out? If you have you know the pimp didn't even raise his hand to the dude. But before that the pimp was fighting his whore who was holding him back from going after the martial arts guy.

So in that case I would call it self defense. The martial arts guy was walking away. The pimp want to start something so bad he followed the guy, got into his range. And the guy hit him.

Well, what is the worst punch to receive? The sucker punch! So why wait for it, if danger is present and you know it will come to blows, strike first and strike hard (no Karate Kid puns!!!!!!!). I say if oportunity presents itself, do what ya gotta do!!!!

Important thing is not to be punch

True. But even more important in a fight if one is ever engaged in a REAL street fight, is to be able to take a punch. You can know all the Martial Arts you want and have all the black belts in the world but if you can't take a punch you're gona get knocked out.

So how does one take a punch in the nose then?

LOL, good question Glimmer. It is all about your mental strength. That is how the best fighters win their fights, like Tyson, Ali, Rickson Gracie, etc... They are able to take a hit. Of course a hit to the nose causes everyone to tear a little bit but when the adrenaline is pumping and you are actually engaged in the fight, you will be very agressive, rather than stopping because you got hit in the nose.

I got punched in the jaw too... it still clicks every now and again to this day...

Some of my scariest sparring experiences were with a guy called Chris Wright. He was a 4 times Cruiserweight Kickboxing World Champion and he was from my home town of Liverpool. If you look him up on the net there are a few pages about him. We trained under Alby Bimpson, who was himself a former champion. This guy (Chris) was just awesome! He never trained for the coloured belts or anything like that - he just trained to be the best and he was. He was like a machine. Never did any weights or worked out in any way other than daily stretching and training in kickboxing. I remember I was real intimidated every time I sparred with him - I hated it as he was just so good and I knew that he could kick my ass as easily as swatting a fly... but one time when we were sparring, I feigned a punch to his head with my right and caught him a beauty on his fu*king nose with a left jab before following up with a roundhouse kick to the body. His eyes opened wide with surprise that I had got one in on him and I started laughing and then he just beat the sh*t out of me! Hahahahahaha! Oooh... :D I wish I still had the time to train, but I work unsociable hours now and wouldn't get the time. :(

Well if you are going to be attacked and you know it then yes you should hit first. But thats not exactly self defence. But in a way it is aswell so...It's half self defence. :p

Hey MJ fan, glad to see you back buddy! :)

Anyway on the subject, what if you don't know for sure you are going to be attacked, how does one know? If we are in a situation and my opponent is engaged in a confrotnation and he is yelling and about to hurt me, how do I know when he will hit me? You won't, you go with instinct and reaction, so I will hit first, so I am not the one that gets hit.

Well if you think you probably are going to be hit or dont know when, then you should strike first. It's better than risking being hit, and i guess i would class that as self defence.

I agree. I would strike first in order not to be striked.

Definitely... if you believe you are in danger of being attacked, you are allowed a pre-emptive strike and the law will be on your side as long as you are defending yourself and nothing else. Personally, if I genuinely believed I was about to be attacked, I would do whatever it took to incapacitate my opponant and take off fast!

Self Defense

Hello All,

If one has trained enough you have attained the strategy level of Sen, Sen, no Sen. There is still no first strike in the martial arts. If one applies Sen, Sen, no Sen strategy, it just looks you are striking first.

I have trained in the martial arts for nearly 30 years and have just recently gotten at all comfortable with Sen, Sen, no Sen.

The first level of Go no Sen is where many find themselves. Then later, and after much training, Sen no Sen comes into play. Sen, Sen, no Sen is truly a thing of wonder.

Best Regards,
Gary

That is very true.

Walk away, simple as that

Just walk away
Let someone else make a fool of themselves by interacting with the attacker, as for me, i'll take the path of least resistance and bid my attacker a good day and just walk away
Now that's what i would call self defense, no pain and no harm done to myself or to the attacker
This way both the attacker and defender wins
