Mob Trial Casts Seagal As Witness

NEW YORK - Action-film hero Steven Seagal (news) is taking a beating in Brooklyn.

He's been labeled a liar by lawyers and mocked by alleged mobsters. And so far, in public, he's not fighting back.

It's all part of Seagal's latest role as a reluctant star witness in a Mafia trial that opened last week in Brooklyn federal court.

"You'll find out that the last thing he wanted to do was to become a witness in a case like this," prosecutor Rick Whelan told the jury.

Seagal is expected to take the witness stand at a later date by court order, infusing some glamour into an otherwise lackluster prosecution against Peter Gotti, brother of the Mafia boss John Gotti, and other accused members of the Gambino crime family. The defense hasn't waited to attack his credibility.

Seagal "is a pathological liar," defense attorney George Santangelo said during opening statements. "He has a reputation all over Hollywood for lying."

The actor, along with his lawyers and publicists, have refused to discuss any aspect of the racketeering case with reporters. "I have no comment," said one of the attorneys, Martin Pollner.

Prosecutors describe Seagal — known for his martial-arts moves in films like "Under Siege" and "Exit Wounds" — as a victim of the Gambino's bid to infiltrate the film industry for profit.

Seagal's troubles began when he had a falling-out with his former producer and business partner, Julius Nasso. Authorities allege Nasso was a Gambino associate who turned to the crime family to help him settle the score — charges Nasso has denied.

During visits to Seagal's homes in Toronto and California, wiseguys warned the actor he "would be hurt or killed" if he didn't pay millions of dollars Nasso believed he was owed, Whelan said.

"Despite his martial arts training, Seagal, like anyone in his position ... became concerned what was going to happen to him," Whelan said. "He became very concerned."

Wiretaps caught a Gambino captain instructing Nasso to demand the actor give the family a $150,000 cut for each film he made, prosecutors said. In a bugged VIP room in a Brooklyn restaurant in 2001, the mob suspects could be overheard chuckling over how "petrified" Seagal looked at a meeting.

"I wish we had gun with us," one gangster said. "That would have been funny."

Said another: "It was like out of the movies."

The defense denies any threats, saying Nasso was always business-like in seeking to get Seagal to repay $500,000 he loaned the actor for taxes. The lawyers claim the actor ran to federal authorities with false accusations to keep Nasso from collecting.

Authorities say Seagal actually didn't trust the feds to help him. He instead visited an unnamed inmate in state prison in New Jersey, thinking the inmate could use his mob connections to get his tormenters off his back, Whelan said.

Seagal "initially refused to testify (or) even meet with the government," the prosecutor said.

I know alot of the members don't want to read bad news on Steven, so if you do not want the updates on the trial just say so and I won't put anymore on here..They want him to look bad so there will be a lot a bad news on him like this one..

I believe what Seagal needs is
a very good press relations organization.
Elsewise we will see many articles without any answers.

Catlady,

It is bad news but we all want to be informed. I hope that
when he takes the stand all of this will change. As for putting
it here, I think we need to know since most of us here will
only try to show support for him.

Thanks again,

Pat/Aggie

Isn't it amazing how people LOVE to hate? And how some love to put someone down cuz it makes them feel "big"? ... the louder the talk the smaller the - - - - if you get the drift. People who are unsure of themselves, who are insecure in their own place in life, are the first ones to have the two-steps talking about someone else. Put-downs are a dime a dozen in the world of "fame" ... it is sad but true. Ignore the craparolla.

Good thoughts and prayers are always good things :)

This is the most brick headed opinionated thing I've read. Obviously this couch potato doesn't like Steven and knows very little about martial arts. He doesn't know what a dojo is and most of us who arn't martial artists know that.

This guy is unbelievable! he doesn't know what a dojo is, he think Chuck Norris is a refined actor, LOL...He puts words in the fans mouths, (I can make my own choices, thank-you)He practically directly accuses Steven of threatening people...He doesn't know the difference between a movie, and the real world, and he is the one who is not making sense...Disgusting! Can't they just get of Steven back? He has enough to deal with! this just makes me sick! Thanks for providing us with the article though, Glimmer...

I am sorry, my dear friends, but Steven is not going to answer
any "comments" made by the press! He learned a very long
time ago, that what ever he would say, the press would twist
it to suit their own purposes.
If you have noticed, most all of the interviews that Steven has
given, they are with those "reporters" that will print exactly what he says, exactly the way that he says it! There are not very many of those!
That's what I had hoped he would use the message board at
StevenSeagal.com for! I don't know, perhaps he just didn't think of using it that way! I do wish that he had.
God bless,

The "press" reminds me a table-full of old gossip hags, all spitting and spewing out their twisted, warped versions of "what happened to so and so ..." Hardly a shread of truth to be heard but plenty of talk and whispers and fingers pointing.
Peel away the peeling and we'll find the Truth :)

Steven's true nature shines through in all he does...
He can't hide it...He has charm, charisma, and a strong sense of human kindness...It's the jealous, shallow, evil people out there who don't see it, because they don't have it within themselves...Nothing they can say could ever convince me otherwise, I just feel it in my bones, I just know...;)

You're so much right. It always made me wonder how come those uneducated jerks make so much noice on something they never possessed and never even tried to understand. Why the hell do they crash on Steven Seagal? What has he done to them? Why don't they wanna let him do what he wants to and what he cares about? Why do they like to say those nasty things and have a pleased face just as if they had eaten their favorite ice cream? Why do they make fun of him?Why don't they just look at themselves in the mirror and see what an ugly mouth they have that pronounces a poisoned speech? That's really, really disappointing, that's terrifying. They make fun of real culture and they turn it into tidbit for society's venomous minds and tongues. This is just so sick and disgusting!
We should support Steven no matter what.We have trust in him.And I know it,I feel it in my heart that no normal intelligent person would ever try to slander and spot somebody's name.I feel it in my bones who he really is.These lies are the reflection of the whole society's face.I'm gonna stand beyond them.
