Type Of Martial Arts Seagal Knows

Hard To Kill
A master of several Japanese martial arts, Steven Seagal is a popular action movie hero whose films combine spiritual concepts and social/environmental consciousness with high-voltage violence. Born in Lansing, MI, on April 10, 1951, Seagal traveled to Japan at the age of 17. There, he taught English, studied Zen, and perfected his martial arts, earning black belts in Aikido, karate, judo, and kendo. Afterwards, he became the first Westerner to open a martial arts school in Japan.

Dear friend: I'm not sure that Seagal is a Master only in Japanese arts. In fact, I'm trying to find out where did he learn WuShu (The Belly of the Beast) and Wing Chun (Into the sun, Out for Killing). Besides he makes a good Kali with Tommy Lee Jones in Under Siege. So, he knows really MANY martial arts styles, and not only from Japan. The man is a GENIUS.

Yeah he know a lot, I'm 2nd degre in Aikido and it took me for ever to get that
high of a belt. I got beat up so many times it was rediculous. In my class I
pressed an offense all-time and Aikido is the ability to use the opponants offense moves against them, so when Iwent to be reverse the moves I used the offense to much and I learned my lesson real fast. Never heard of Wushu or Wing Chun
I will as my teacher and see if he can help and I will let you know where you can learn it. I will let you lnow as soon as possible.

Well, dear colleague fan, it is very beautiful that you love Aikido so much. I love it too and I do have too some bad rememberings on my body, from the times when I was a practitioner... you know, one bad done Nikyo almost broke my left wrist, and a terrible Koshi nage did almost wipe my right kidney out. Wow, it still hurts. But, it is natural to suffer such things when one starts practicing something so serious like this. My Aikido teacher used to say: ''Don't cry babies. In chess games this doesn't happen. So go and play chess...'

Yes, you say well when you say that Aikido is ''the ability to use the opponants offense moves against them''. Very well said. Nevertheless, and it is my personal opinion (that obviously may be wrong) that he has learnt other things apart from Aikido, Kendo, etc. He makes Chi Sao, he makes typical Kali with knives, movements of Tai Chi... Well, it's my opinion. I haven't found anywhere information about it.

Well, dear ''seagalstheman'', if you find out something about that, please let me know. I will thank it to you a lot. And congratulations for your 2nd Dan degree! I know that the best triumph on man's life is attaining something like that.

It's a pleasure to meet you. Greetings and a big hug for you, ''Seagalstheman''!

God bless you

Seaal does not and has not rained in Kung Fu or chinese arts. He did however practise Kali/Escrima with Dan Inosanto. And as Little stated, he has trained with the Machado Bros. Jui Jitsu. The choreography for Belly Of The Beast and the other movies was just that, choreographed.

Dear tenshinaikidoka and LittleDragon: Thank you very much to both of you for the information, I can see both are really very well informed. By the way, I had the suspicion that Seagal had studied Kali seriously (Inosanto, woooow!!!) because he moves too well with the knives... And of course Mr. Dan must have taught him something of Wing Chun or Jeet Kune Do (I guess this was something unavoidable, particularly due to the holistic vission that Dan Inosanto has of martial arts) But the notice of his training on Brazilian JuJitsu is very, very interesting and I had never heard of that.
One question, the precise style of Aikido of Mr. Seagal is TenShin Aikido? Was he student of Kissomaru Ueshiba? Please, let me know.
Thanks in advance to both of you.
Hugs

I believe the dojo is called Tenshin Dojo but Seagal's Aikido style is Aiki-kai Aikido. ;)

The style that Seagal Sensei has is refered to as Tenshin, hence the name of his dojo's. It is under the Aikikai umbrella as far as issuance of rank (Dan) whihc Seagal and Doshu both sign. I am part of the Tenshin Aikido Federation, which is directed by Luis Santos Sensei, a direct student of Take Sensei. For information on Tenshin Aikido visit www.tenshindojo.us This is Santos Sensei website and it can give you inforamtion as well as links to affiliated dojo's under Tenshin Aikido Federation and the teaching methodology of Shihan Steven Seagal. If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to ask.
