So if you have had no one on one expierence and just learned from books how can you give someone advice on how to defend themselves?

I have been doing martial arts for 12 years, tae kwon do, aikido, judo, brazillian jiu-jitsu, kung fu, hapkido, boxing, jeet kune do..
I can only say that i've walked the streets in both day and night, no confrontations.
I believe it's because i've prepared myself spiritually to be protected from all enemies.
Alot of times drunken or drug users have noticed my assertiveness and positiveness and departed my presence on the street after they've inquired a kind gesture or reply from me. Ex: God bless you, God loves you, I'll pray for you

What do you mean? To avoid the situation? Because in a STREET FIGHT which you have stated, it is too late, it is already in progress if you really mean a street FIGHT. The best defense in a street fight is simplicity, gouge the eyes, kick to the groin, strike to the throat.
Yes! That's exactly what i mean. i would get the attacker off of me and run for help. But i would not stay around to finish the fight on the street. There will be illegal consequences to consider on the streets between one's self and another

No one would stay around to finish the fight, however as long the attacker is still standing there is a good chance that you can still get smacked.

Get the attacker off you????? Not all attacker would come and try to pin you and take you down to the ground. Some just come in with powerful strikes! With no martial arts training, there's no way you can get out of that. Unless you have been in tons of street fights and taught youself how to defend various attacks.

And I agree with Little Dragon on the facts about you learn stuff from books. Martial art books are no substitute for actual martial arts training. You can't learn exactly how the moves are executed unless you have been shown how to. If learning martial arts is as easy as reading some martial art books, then everyone can be a master on any martial art book they read then.

I guess my experience with street thugs are different than yours and littledragon's? I believe God is guiding me to safer pastures on the streets i've walked on and am walking on. I've never relied on physically fighting with or defending myself with street urchins to solve problems in the encounters i've experienced thus far.

Don you have to understand, you can not just give out information on self defense and on martial arts if you have not even had one class or years of experience.

Hello,
I haven't read all that was written on this subject,if you allow me here's my two cents:
All the styles can be valid for Self-Defence.
However, some are more realistic than others!
If you have a good background I.E some Martial Arts experience maybe you can indulge in more fancy techniques but fancy techniques generally don't work when you're faced with an experienced warrior!
In other words,if the guy in front of you is trying to take your head off or rip you apart
or worse if he is not alone or has some kind of a weapon!
It would be more wise not to fight!
Run away if you can!
If you can't run away use 'common sense' techniques:No kicks above the waist ,(Low Kicks are fine,if you can damage his knee or whole leg he won't fight!)
kick the sensitive areas, like the groin, the knees, the ankles or the belly;that works wonder!!!!
Some styles like Kung-Fu San Soo,Krav Maga or Wing Tsun(Wing chun) are fast roads to self defense!!
If you have more time and learn some good Karate in ten years you'll be an accomplished fighter as well!!!
It all depends on your priorities and options!
On your physical strength and body dynamics too!
Peace!

There is no true style for street fighting, depends on circumstances but walking away is the best.
I rather be a live coward then be the baddest guy in the grave yard

I completley agree with you. Looking back I do not know why I created this thread, when it comes to a street fight there is no such thing as style, you just use whatever means necessary in order to survive.

In street fights there are no rules or honour, you will get hit in the back and kicked when you are down

You could be out numbered or even outgunned weapons wise and you can't say Matei and expect the fight to stop if you are losing.

If its a life or death situation then if you have to fight and can't run away then fight until u can't breath or move

I prefer the theory and spiritual side of martial arts then the physical althou have ur body in a healthly condition. I have always believed the mind works best when it likes a parachute, when its open.

I just have never been a confrontional type of guy and if it wasn't for my job, I HONESTLY believe that I will not have the need to fight with out an unnesscary reason in my current life.

My idol and my saviour Mahatma Gandhi as a fellow Hinduist said an eye for an eye will leave the world blind

So do you actually plan to learn Martial Arts?? :D
If one day, God willing, i will actually take a martial arts training in the soft arts as i mentioned before. To me, the hard arts are too strenuous and waste of physical energy. Whereas the soft arts will promote harmony and continued success for my future walks and talks with others in street encounters.
