Who Do You Think Are The Best Martial Artists Today?

Mike I (again) completely agree. Seagal was ruthless in its most vulgar and scarriest meaning in his earliest days; he showed no mercy (neither with his students' tests nor with the reporters and their comments). Right now he understands his spiritual self better, and he is that much better man for that (Bruce Lee and Seagal would get along in God's world).

Also, Jet Li (the Chinese winner of multiple Wu-Shu competitions) said it himself after having his first-hand experience with the UFC guys, that he himself would not last long in the ring with those top players. That just shows that a real (street) fight is nothing like what you see in movies (i.e. Cradle 2 the Grave UFC scene; although amazing, very unrealistic).

15 huh, and still ...

Jet Li would get killed in a match with someone from the UFC. That Cradle to the Grave UFC scene was one of the most ridiculous scenes in any martial arts film that i have ever seen..SO UNREALISTIC THAT NOT EVEN A RETARTED CHILD WOULD BELIEVE IT..It was pathetically funny. Spiderman was much more realistic..Wu-Shu is not a good martial art to use in the UFC..Jujitsu orf some form and ground fighting is what all fights come down to..Karate or kung fu aint gonna get you anywhere in that ring on its own..

This guy knows what he's talking about.

Besides, if you judge Jet Li's skills based on his movie fights alone (a lot of which is wire fu) then you're not getting the whole picture, I'm afraid. Li is one of the most gifted martial artists the world has ever seen. He's what some people call a prodigy.

YES!! IN TOTAL AGREEMENT! His skill is so amazing, yes he does Wu-shu as well as other styles of kung-fu such as the phoenix style that can be seen in THE ONE, for the people who say oh Jet just does wu shu and wont work, I say try him!

ok, maybe, but he doesn't look realistic in my opinion...His fighting looks fake, Seagal Sensei's fighting is very real, smooth, and natural looking...I think, and will always think that he's far above the others in appeal, for that reason, alone...I think it shows a lot of skill...Besides he has a lot of skill, as for the others I really don't know...And I don't care honestly, somehow they just aren't the same caliber in my book...
Maybe I'm wrong, but that's my opinion from what I have observed...Jet Li movies are just boring to me...So are Van Damme's...Not only boring but silly looking even, very unrealistic and showy...To me, Steven does not come across that way at all, he comes across as very, serious, proficient, skilled, dangerous and deadly...He makes you ooh, and ahh....And oh, and it's so stimulating for me to watch...It's my pleasure...He's the man, no doubt...And BOTB was awesome for me...He's still got it, always will... :)

Van Damme I can agree with but one thing I can say is you have never seen the real Jet Li!

Welcome to the site one_weak!

I agree that Jet Li is the real deal when it comes to his martial art..He is legit but its just very sad that we never get to see his real art in his movies of today..The crap he puts out nowadays is just all wire fu and so unrealistic its ridiculous..
He is way more legit than Van damm in real life but Van Damm makes movies that look more realistic. The stuff you see Li do in his latest films is stuff that no one can do in real life-its like watching Keanu Reeves in the Matrix beating up a hundred Mr. Smiths..The One was so ridiculous and that is why is bombed big time..He just has too many unrealistic fight scenes in his movies like the UFC scene in Cradle to The Grave where he is flying around the ring in mid air doing spin kicks and wiping out the whole group of fighters..The you have the scene from The One" I think where he wipes out about 50 martial arts students in a dojo..
I respect him as a martial artist and he is the real deal but I hate his movies..I'm not into comedy in martial arts movies..
Van Damm is no where near the martial artist that Li is(in fact he is'nt a martial artist at all) but his movies are more realistic and his fight scenes are much better and better choreographed..Check out his last one: In Hell.. I prefer Van Damm's movies to Li any day and he is not in Li's class as a martial artist..

Then perhaps anybody of you here might have seen The Hero...so much fantasy that it's even hard to tell what is real...

Jet Li and Jamal Ajigirei are two of the world's best Wu-Shu stylists.

Jet Li's specialty is Wu-Shu, he said that himself. He does have training in other forms and styles, but wu-shu is his main thing. Li is one of the best in the world, having won his Chinese competitions as Norris did with his Karate and TKD back here in the West. Jet Li is the real deal, but when it comes to UFC, Jet Li would have a hard time adjusting (he wouldn't stand a chance at the title before having gained some experience in such real browls) to the real-deal fighting of much more experienced fighters (those who fight basically almost to death - a bit exaggerated, but get my point?).

David Letterman

I concur that a Martial Artist will not put themself in a path of distruction. For Budo is the teaching of protecting all things.
So this is just for fun. In the early ninties Steven Seagal said on David Letterman when asked "could he beat Van Damm" Seagal said "Van Damm would beat him in the legs but he could take him in the upper body."
Well you know how Letterman is, he wants a yes or no and picks till he gets it. So Seagal said ok David I'll take him.LOL
Does anyone here remember that?

littledragon, any luck finding clips? Can you search for anything Seagal related on these sites? (I don't use them myself but I am curious)

Of course in the US, we only get so many opportunities to see new Chinese fighters from Hong Kong/Asian cinema...

Given that....the best I've seen is Jet Li, hands down. Jackie Chan is also amazing, and i'm sure oft-overlooked because of his comic flair and stunts.

As far as goons like Speakman, van Damme or Dacascos...those guys are horrible, imo. Someone earlier mentioned Norris. The Octagon & Eye for an Eye were pretty sweet. Vintage Chuck.

If he were alive, Bruce Lee would take out everyone mentioned in this thread without blinking.

^^in my last post, for some reason i thought the thread was about on-screen martial artists...I'm sure there are a ton of great fighters out there who dont act, who could take out alot of the famous cats...

and Lotussan....sorry, but you must be smoking some good sh*t. I know I just came on this board, and I def. dont want to disrespect anybody,...so with all due respect - you really dont know what you're talking about.

You admitted that you haven't even really seen Bruce Lee - you think Seagal has more passion about his art than Lee, which is ludicrous beyond belief.

Bruce Lee was on a spiritual level unmatched by anyone (save maybe Bob Marley) I've seen to this day...a unique spark in the history of humanity...

You're wildly imaginative supposition was backwards...Bruce Lee @ 50 would wipe the floor with Seagal @ 30. If you really do appreciate Seagal's spiritual side, you should look into Bruce Lee's writings and philosophy.

Littledragon869 seems to know what's up.... ;)

anyways, nothing personal, just givin' my .02.
