Why do they dub someone else's voice in?

Hi,

I've noticed that in his last few movies that some other guy is speaking when Steven's mouth is moving or when the camera is not on him. Not all the time, but some of the time. Why is that? Man is it annoying!

We've had this discussion endless times. Some people come down on one side - that it wasn't built in his contract to do post-production work (which in my opinion seems odd, from what I know about the movie business). Other people come down on the other side - that he simply can't be bothered to do post-production work. There's nothing wrong with his voice, else why would he be trying to break into the music business as a singer and a musician?

No one really knows. If you want to see what's been discussed already, try this thread: http://www.steven-seagal.net/forum/showthread.php?t=3949.

From IMDB a post by a user 'mcmanus5':

"Being a very close, and personal friend of Steven's, I must say (...) yes, it is true that his voice is dubbed at points in the movie. The reason, as mentioned in the other posts is due to the cost as well as Steven's VERY busy schedule working on several film projects as well as his music career.

Tulku Tenzin Chophak Rinpoche "

I don't know whether this is true, or not, anyway, no reason to think, that it is not.

i understand where that comment is coming from but busy or not he still has to be there to be filmed then dubbed meaning it wont really make any difference to his busy schedule if he tlk while being filmed or not.

I think the reason for this is two-pronged:
One, Seagal has a very soft, low voice that is probably difficult to pick up on the microphones used in filming.
Two, Seagal is a bad actor, so even a dubbed voice is more convincing than Seagal's monotone emoting.

It may be true; but why is Steven so busy when other actors seem to find the time to complete their movies? It's a poor excuse; I'm not buying it. And, look at the source- "imdb.com". Remember, anybody can post anything on imdb.com. It doesn't mean it's true.

You're such a hoot, Lollipop! If I were Steven, I'd be nervous! You'd straighten his act out in a New York minute, you would! :D

Well, if he is busy, i would suggest that he makes 2 movies in a year instead of 4! He just has to take his time to work on the post-production. I would rather see 2 movies where you can here Steven's own voice then 4 movies where we hear the voice dubbing. He just has to take his time on filmmaking. Nobody of his fans is saying that he has to make 4 movies in a year. Take more time for a movie and maybe the quality will be better!!

Imagine the situation:

X: Hi, Steven. We would like you to star in our film. We'd pay 4 million dollars to you.

Seagal: Well, no thanks. I'm already working on two films. I prefer the post-production work.

You're right about that. But the 4 millions can become more if you take your time with making a movie to reach better quality. Then he will get better offers by the studios and then maybe is able to make Under Siege 3! And i think Steven has to do it for his fans....

it might be that steven seagal practices ki-ai shouts or spiritual chants of holy sounds on a daily basis?
that certainly explains it for me as to why he overdubs his voice in movies nowadays
His voice is overworked from chanting and shouting after his exercises

No - he's simply not under contract to do any post-production work, especially since post-production work would require him to go back to whatever country he filmed the movie in, and that he won't do. If they don't get the sound right while he's there, they have to dub in a voice-double. It's as simple as that.

Eh, sorry if I sounded a bit - well. We've discussed this topic endlessly, and we've just recently had it confirmed that it's a contract issue. Though why anyone making a movie would leave something like this out, is beyond my meagre comprehension.
