Widow of Christoper Reeve dies of cancer

CTV.ca News Staff

Dana Reeve, the widow of the late "Superman" actor Christopher Reeve, died yesterday of lung cancer at the age of 44.

Reeve won worldwide admiration for the support of her late actor-husband, who was paralyzed in a horse-riding accident in 1996 and died in 2004.

She fought for better treatments and possible cures for paralysis through the Christopher Reeve Foundation, which she took over as chair after her husband's death.

Reeve said in November that she was able to keep her spirits up because she "had a great model. … I was married to a man who never gave up."

A spokesperson for the foundation said Reeve died Monday of lung cancer at New York's Memorial Sloan-Kettering Medical Center.

Word of Reeve's death comes from Kathy Lewis, president and CEO of the foundation.

In a statement, Lewis said: "On behalf of the entire board of directors and staff of the Christopher Reeve Foundation, we are extremely saddened by the death of Dana Reeve, whose grace and courage under the most difficult of circumstances was a source of comfort and inspiration to all of us."

Reeve leaves behind a 13-year-old son, Will, who she lived with in Westchester County, near New York.

Along with her son, she is survived by her father, Dr. Charles Morosini, sisters Deborah Morosini and Adrienne Morosini Heilman, and two stepchildren, Matthew and Alexandra.

She has appeared on Broadway, off-Broadway and regional stages and on the TV shows "Law & Order," "Oz," and "All My Children."

"Dana will always be remembered for her passion, strength and ceaseless courage that became her hallmark," Lewis said. "Along with her husband, Christopher, she faced adversity with grace and determination, bringing hope to millions around the world."

Geez, I'm beginning to feel like the Grim Reaper, myself.

She was a brave woman, a strong woman, wife of an incredible human being, and together, their losses are our losses, for spirit, generosity, and strength.
