Urban Justice (Renegade Justice) Reviews

I'm not sure if I agree on the part of 'forgetting it 10 minutes after it's over', because I watched it 3 weeks ago and I'm still laughing my ass of at the thought of the final scene.

'That was some real gangster ****' :D

No, the movie wasn't good in a way Under Siege was, but I'll be damned: it was really enjoyable with a simple but effective script and loads of fighting. It made me think of Out For Justice, were there was also little time for character development, but enough time for some real asskicking.

I would rate it a 78 out of 100: really enjoyable with some cool acting, but at the same time somewhat cheezy. Still I'm very happy with the directing by mr. FauntLeRoy who proves one doesn't need a 60 million dollar budget to deliver a good action movie!

WOW, simple as that!!

Hi all

Sorry, I've not posted for a while, but felt compelled too after last night. I've just watched 'Renegade Justice' (Urban Justice US).

What a return to form!! As vern said in the 'Seagalogy' book, it's spot on. A simplified plot - 'revenge' and back to the Aikido we all know and love. No dubbing no 'obvious' stunt-doubles. It was well-shot and was set in America as opposed to the bleak European locations of the over-complicated DTV stuff.

It was great. Lots of Seagal against thugs scraps which I think he does so well. Let this be a welcome return to form.

It has truly restored my faith

I just rewatched Urban Justice for the first time since it was a new release, some 7 years ago, I think.
Actually, if I remember right, I had only joined this forum shortly before it came out, it was the one I remember everyone was talking about and hoping for good things from.
Kind of off topic, but I remember back then, there was a big thread with Don Fauntleroy the director ,actually came in and answered questions and things, that was so cool!
I've been away for quite a while, back a few weeks now, but I don't see that thread anywhere, did it get removed for some reason or am I just not looking in the right places?

Anyway, Urban Justice was every bit as good as I remembered, heck, maybe better!
Great, great fights, Seagal was in true form on this one, I remember when it first came out it was following some lesser efforts, Attack Force and Flight of Fury, but watching it now for the first rime in so long, I found that, for me, it really stands up as a solid, well made Seagal action movie.
I agree with some others, though, the profanity was a bit overkill, kind of so much it took me out of the movie a few times.
I understand gritty realism, but this wasn't real, it was a movie, so I wish it had been a little more moderate.
HOWEVER, that takes nothing away from the overall enjoyment I got from the action scenes, the terrific character Seagal plays, I love the simply straightforward story, much like Taken and others, he was after the guy who killed his son, period.
And pity those who get in his way.
I just watched Out For Justice again last night, and it was similar to that type of story, looking for the guy who killed his friend, in this the guy who killed his son, and breaking or killing anyone who tries to stop him.
I also thought Seagal looked really good in this, seemed obvious he was trying to get in action guy shape again and he moved great, I mean when you could see it was really him and not a double, so this movie for me had it all, in fact, with some of the movies I've seen in the theater the past few years, I wonder how close this might come today to getting a theatrical release if it was just now coming out.
It was a little dark, I almost forgot, but not anymore than others I've seen, and better than a lot!
Terrific little movie, I wish I had it on Blu Ray, not sure it was released anywhere as one, I have not found a Region 1 anyway.
Great movie, a real return to form for Steven.
Take care,
Kevin

Just watched this movie again after 8-9 years.. Man, Seagal was in good shape in this one! Really a lot thinner. Almost his mid 90's shape.
Still think this is his best DTV film even though it does have a one major problem: the picture quality.
There are many scenes where the picture is really grainy. Even for a DVD standard it looks bad. Have anyone else notice this?
This movie really needs a remastered blu-ray release.

Yes seem to remember i enjoyed this when it was released too. The director even came to this site and answered a load of questions about the movie. Remember too the picture was pretty dark too in places, i have a high definition release of it and it wasn't much better. :(

Agree, I think Urban Justice is probably his best of the many DTV movies Seagal has done. Simple, straight-forward plot, with gritty action and a no-nonsense film making approach. Kudos to Don E. Fauntleroy's direction.

It was great that Fauntleroy came to the site and answered our questions. Always good to get an understanding of the film from the director's perspective.

Nice, didn't realize it was released on Blu-Ray.
Nope...all these 'new' Seagal Bluray releases are bootlegs made from the HD streaming versions.
Not all Seagal films have Bluray releases but many now are on-line in HD....they are not rematered, but they are better than just upscaled video..an upscaled video will get blurrier the more it's upscaled....these HD versions appear to be upscaled from the original digital films...there's a big difference.
If i remember right it was pretty dark at times and hard to see what was going on when watching on DVD, is the Blu-Ray easier to see?
Tho' they are upscaled to HD
, they still retain the original look because they aren't remastered....the grainy scenes are still grainey and the dark scenes are still dark.
We are better off just downloading the HD or streaming them(many are free in Amazon Prime)versions rathe than pay for a bootleg.

I guess you're correct regarding the Blu-ray releases of the Warner movies, however, this is a Sony movie and Sony does, unlike Warner, indeed licence to other companys. I guess Sony did licence the movie to this company specific for this special "Mediabook" edition. Also, Sony will publish this movie in Germany later this year by themselves in a normal keep case Blu-ray edition. Maybe other countries will follow later, since "Pistol Whipped" was also released on Blu-ray by Sony in many countries around the world.

Coming of the Michael Keusch trilogy, Renegade Justice is a real change. In fact: I love this movie. It felt like a comeback to me. This is the Seagal I'd like to see. This is the closest he comes to his old movies. You see what he can achieve if he puts in some effort. Seagal got along fine with director Don E. Fauntleroy and it shows. Fauntleroy knows how to make it work, although he had a low budget and a short filming schedule. He takes the best out of it (just like Roel Reine will do with Pistol Whipped).

No voice dubbing, almost no doubles, good fightscenes, a motivated Seagal and a good supporting cast. Also the movie is never boring because there is a good amount of action throughout the movie (fightscenes, explosions, shoot outs and a car chase). And Seagal is just bad ass. There are a lot of glimses of the old Seagal when he is bad mouthing the bad guys before taking them out.

Great movie!!!

Agree completely. For me, Urban Justice is the best Seagal film since his early theatrical release days.

Liked Urban Justice, you could tell he was more involved. Was also nice to see him in fight scenes where he took on a few guys at once which used to be one of his trademarks.

Only thing which needed work was the lighting, even the daylight scenes looked grim and shady. The final fight scene was so dark you could barely see what was going on.

Still, definitely on the better end of his DTVs.
