Allergies! :(

Someone mentioned allergies in another thread I just read, so I thought I'd ask here....

For the last few days I've had really red, watery eyes. I don't know if it's allergy or what, it could be hay fever because it is Spring, but I'm not sure if that's what it is. I took a Claritin tablet (if anyone knows what that is), yesterday and today. It doesn't seem to be doing much, my eyes are still watery. It's really irritating, sometimes the eyes get really stingy etc. I can't get anything done like this. But I don't want to go see a doc just yet, it takes too much time and effort.

Anyone got any advice on what to take or what it could be? Or anyone else suffering from (possible) allergy?

Your best bet is to get tested for allergies, especially if you've never had them before. Eye irritation can come from a variety of sources, such as airborne pollens, dust and moulds. Also irritants like toxic chemicals (have you recently used or been in contact with or in the vicinity of a commercial cleaner you've been around before, for example?). Claritin, I believe, is mostly for allergies affecting breathing.

Or, it might not be allergies at all - it could be conjunctivitis, or "pink eye" - a highly contagious infection for which you will need to get antibiotics (and try not to rub your eyes!).

You should get it checked out by a doctor, just to be on the safe side. If it is pink eye, then anyone you come into contact with can get it as well.

I think it is allergies, mine do similar things, and the only thing
that helps is antihistamine eyes drops...
You have to get ones that contain antihistamines...
The kind I have is called occuhist, not sure, but I think...

Ooo, yeah, I forgot about cat dander. Dog hair, too. Or too many hours staring at the computer screen!

Okay, now we're scaring Disciple.... (evil grin)

No pets right now, so it's not that.

But thanks for the info, TD and Lotus. I think it might be conjunctivitis, I did a search and I seem to have a lot of the telltale signs. Got to deal with it now, I guess.

Goodness, I hope it's not that, Disciple...Of course the other is no fun, either...
I suspected cat dander for mine, and it was just terrible...Do you have any cats?

My partner is a therapist who treats allergies and illnesses holistically, without the use of drugs, using mainly nutritional advice and Meridian Energy Therapy.

The first step is to drink lots of mineral water, around 4 pints (or 2 litres) a day. It sounds so simple and yet it works. All my life I have been badly asthmatic and could never be around cats and dogs without getting an attack. Since I started drinking 4 pints of water a day, my allergies have almost disappeared. I didn't believe it until I tried it for myself.

The results are not instant, but in a few weeks you will really notice the difference. Give it a go, it really does work.

Sounds interesting...

Richie,

When you have the time... can you please elaborate on this?
Is one supposed to do this every day (as for the rest of one's life), or for a certain amount of time?

Is it the fizzy kind, Ritchie?
Or do you mean like evian?
I know I barely drink anything...
And soda is so bad, but I love it...

Ha, thanks for the pic! :D

My eyes are getting better slowly, I ended up using some homeopathic eyedrops because that looked like the best thing I could get without visiting the doc (to get the dedicated conjunctivitis drops you need a prescription). Thanks to all for the help and advice. :)

Glad to hear that. More often than not it is just allergies. Those drops can be expensive, though!
