Belly Of The Beast

This is Steven Seagal's latest motion picture. This movie is released on region 1 dvd on 31st December 2003 and region 2 dvd on 16th February 2003. This thread contains important information on the release.

Budget: $14 million

Location: Bangkok, Thailand

Plot: Ex-CIA Agent JAKE HOPPER has run a successful private security business since leaving the agency when his wife died, leaving him alone with daughter, JESSICA.

While hiking in Thailand, Jessica and her friend SARAH are kidnapped by an organization that calls itself the ABU KARAF. Sarah is a US Senator's daughter. For ransom the Abu Karaf demand the release of 20 prisoners from American custody. The US Secretary of State urges restraint - he won't negotiate. An ex-colleague of Jake's recognizes Jessica on the ransom tape and tips him off. Jake knows he must rescue the girls himself.

An old CIA buddy puts Jake in contact with 'LEON WASHINGTON' an active CIA agent working in Thailand. Jake goes to Bangkok and escapes an assassination attempt by unknown forces. Leon arranges a meeting with SOKU Ð the internal security chief for JANTAPAN. Jantapan is an eccentric and scary character, a rebel military general that is making a play to be one of the most powerful men in Thailand. Secretly Jantapan is messing with some dangerous spiritual forces.

Soku provides Jake with a cover story, but the CIA wants Jake out of it - they are planning to take out the Abu Karaf with the aid of the Thai army and don't want a civilian in the middle.

Jake is a spiritual man so he contacts his spiritual master PAITOON. As Jake is in trouble, Paitoon offers to arrange a divination from the oracle of the order.

Jake enlists the help of his old friend and partner SUNTI. Together they con LULU, the girlfriend of WU an arms dealer, to steal information leading to the Abu Karaf. Jake & Sunti follow the leads to a warehouse where they discover evidence of highly sophisticated weaponry. With the dangerous drug dealer Wu now after Lulu, Jake takes her under his wing.

Jake shares some of his info with Leon - still testing the waters. Can he trust the CIA agent? Another attempt is made on Jake's life - this time Jake is sure that Leon was involved. Finally, the Abu Karaf contact Jake to arrange a meeting - the pieces are coming together.

Jake gets his reading from the old oracle. The cryptic message confirm his fears - evil and demonic spiritual forces are working against him. Jantapan tries to send the spirit of an ancient warrior demon to kill Jake but the ceremony goes wrong and the spirit enters Jantapan himself giving him amazing physical and spiritual powers.

Jake and Sunti go to meet the leader of the Abu Karaf SUNGRIT - he confirms what Jake suspects - since 9/11 Jantapan has worked to corner the narcotics and arms market. It was Jantapan who kidnapped the girls, blaming the Abu Karaf so the army would wipe out his competition. Sungrit knows where the girls are and gives Jake plans and intelligence. They both need the girls alive. With more betrayal and action on the horizon, Jake must engage in a battle that will put both his physical and spiritual powers to the ultimate test as he takes on the demon Jantapan in a wild battle that can only end in death.

Great information Craig! Thank-You!
I can't wait to see this one!
Sounds like some real spirituality is thrown in there, and I bet Thailand was just gorgeous for the shooting of this film...
I bet Jake's character gives us a refreshing little glimpse about what the real Steven is like, eh? :)

I'm not happy about this "spiritual" business - one of the reasons why Steven's films work for me is that they are solidly in this plane of existence. Now that we've got magic entering the picture, Steven's on-screen credibility is slowly being eroded.

I'm not, alas, looking forward to BOTB as much as I had been.

But thanks, Craig, for posting the synopsis. I'll just have to wait and see the film to see if the supernatural elements work, or not.

-TD, hopes dashed

Disciple

come get some
What I don't get is where is Russell Wong? I could be mistaken but I don't see him in the trailer...

Nick

The Writer
I thought he was the main villain that fights Steven Segal in the end. The one that was shooting arrows at Steven, while Steven was blocking them with a sword. Also there’s a scene where you see a man practicing various kicks, I believe that’s also Russell Wong.

Oooooooh, him with the sword...I can't wait to see more of that!
One of the reasons I loved Exit Wounds and OFAK...
He is amazing with that thing! What an exciting man...mmmm....;)

I mainly posted this to update the site introduction page. So people can see the latest easily.

I got this email this week from a girl who was fortunate to meet Steven Seagal in Thailand when he was filming Belly Of The Beast. She wants to remain anonymous.

My ex-boyfriend is lawyer in Bangkok and is American. I found out he
helped Mr. Seagal when Mr. Seagal was in Bangkok earlier this year 2003.
Mr. Seagal was staying on the 30th floor of Sheraton Grand near Asok
and his bodyguard Jimmy Moy called my boyfriend to come the hotel at
midnight to discuss some problem. I heard Mr Seagal wanted some reason to
permanently stay in Thailand because some problem with the mafia in New
York and some legal case where there was a death threat against Mr
Seagal. I think Mr Seagal found out that my ex boyfriend had some
connection to the CIA and my boyfriend told me that Mr Seagal was also a CIA
agent or used to be CIA agent. They also both know Aikido, so there was
some connection from the government or from martial arts but I am not
sure. The two of them met a few times and there was some plan to get Mr
Seagal arrested while he was in Thailand for some fake charge like a
staged fight, or a bounced check, or a stolen movie script. This was so Mr.
Seagal wouldn't have to go back to the US for the legal case. This was
while Mr. Seagal was in Thailand for the movie Belly of the Beast. One
night I went with my boyfriend very late to the Sheraton- Mr. Seagal
had a lot bodyguards and had the whole 30th floor of the hotel. They
checked my boyfriend for gun and then we went to Mr. Seagal's room. I
couldn't believe how tall he was, and he spoke Thai very fluently, which
most foreigners cannot do, even after living Thailand long time. There
were almost 10 bodyguards in the room and some Thai girls giving Mr.
Seagal massage. It was very strange and scary, but also exciting. I don't
know what happened, but I head that the Mr. Seagal did win the legal case
in New York, so maybe the problem was solved. They never talked in
front of me and my boyfriend never told me anything, but I just believe
that whatever happened in Bangkok was a help to Mr. Seagal.
I am waiting now for the movie but it not come out yet in Thailand.
Well, maybe this is interesting for your website.

Isn't anybody at all bothered by our Steven's lack of moral sensibilities (and I'm not talking about the girls giving him a massage, either) and his cowardice? I'm so creeped out by this information, and because of it, he continues to diminish before my very eyes. This is more than I really wanted to know about my "hero" and his decided deficiencies in the area of good character, and, yes, I'm back to bleating about the more I know about "real" Steven, the less I like him.

The young lady reporting this might want to remain anonymous, but just by reporting it, his "people" will know who she is. She'd better know how to hide.

I know that some people will do stupid things to avoid unpleasant consequences to their actions, but this absolutely takes the cake.

Sorry, folks, but - yuck.

Follow-up Jan 10, 2004

I was debating about deleting this post myself since someone recently brought it up as an incitement to riot. A few posts down from this one I realised what I had said and decided to bow gracefully out of the discussion, but at the time, I decided to let this post stand as is.

I came back to it again today, and realised it was one of my typical knee-jerk reactions. But again, I decided against deleting it. What is the point? It's been quoted in other messages, and I would have to get the moderators to go in and delete those posts as well, and that would incite a further riot amongst the members who already think there is too much censorship going on.

So here it stays, at least for the time being. My request to anyone reading this post for the first time is to read further down for my follow-up. If this post is used again to stir up trouble, I will delete it, and I will ask the moderators to delete the text from any place that it has been quoted. I'm not interested in starting any flame wars. There's been enough of that already.

Sorry, TD, but he doesn't diminish in my eyes.
If what this person said was true.
She "heard" that Mr. Seagal was looking for some
way to stay in Thailand? He's never had any problems
staying there before, why a problem now? But nothing was
discussed in front of her and she and her boyfriend never
discussed it? Something smells fishy here. I've learned,
over the years, to take "comments" like these with a grain of
salt. Steven knows that getting "arrested" over there would be
a stupid move, to say the least.
You called him a coward. I don't see it that way. Especially when
even "undercover agents" know that they could die if the mob finds
out who they are. Most ordinary citizens won't testify againt the mob.
They don't want to die and they don't want their families harmed.
Testifying against the mob was a very brave thing to do. I don't know
that I would have that kind of courage.
We believe that he is the greatest Martial Artist. But even superior
knowledge of the Martial Arts won't stop a bullet. I'm sure that he
is all too well aware of that fact, especially where his family is concerned.
Still friends? :D
God bless,

Of course, Casey! Heck, if we all agreed with each other, it would be pretty dull around here, wouldn't it? :D

I take your point; and it was something of a kneejerk reaction on my part, it's true. Most people do take the path of self-preservation in the face of threats against one's life and that of one's family, sometimes doing or proposing to do stupid things in order to accomplish that. It takes a lot of courage to stand up and do the right thing, and it doesn't necessarily make one a coward if one doesn't, under those circumstances.

And, I grant that this article could be a put-up job by someone looking to discredit Steven's character - like we haven't seen those before. If so, someone has a really, really good imagination. I'm a good writer, and I sure as heck couldn't come up with anything so bizarre.

I think I know where my reaction comes from: I can't conceive of making up such a story myself, so why anyone else would escapes me. That would perhaps make me naive more than gullible. (Well, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.)

I'll stand down on further discussion, since I realise now I can't be as objective as I'd like. I'm sure the usual suspects will heap villification upon my head, both for my initial comment and my backing away from it. Either way, it's a no-win scenario for me - again. (sigh)

No worries with you, Casey - and thanks for pointing out an alternative point of view.
