Belly Of The Beast

This is Steven Seagal's latest motion picture. This movie is released on region 1 dvd on 31st December 2003 and region 2 dvd on 16th February 2003. This thread contains important information on the release.

Budget: $14 million

Location: Bangkok, Thailand

Plot: Ex-CIA Agent JAKE HOPPER has run a successful private security business since leaving the agency when his wife died, leaving him alone with daughter, JESSICA.

While hiking in Thailand, Jessica and her friend SARAH are kidnapped by an organization that calls itself the ABU KARAF. Sarah is a US Senator's daughter. For ransom the Abu Karaf demand the release of 20 prisoners from American custody. The US Secretary of State urges restraint - he won't negotiate. An ex-colleague of Jake's recognizes Jessica on the ransom tape and tips him off. Jake knows he must rescue the girls himself.

An old CIA buddy puts Jake in contact with 'LEON WASHINGTON' an active CIA agent working in Thailand. Jake goes to Bangkok and escapes an assassination attempt by unknown forces. Leon arranges a meeting with SOKU Ð the internal security chief for JANTAPAN. Jantapan is an eccentric and scary character, a rebel military general that is making a play to be one of the most powerful men in Thailand. Secretly Jantapan is messing with some dangerous spiritual forces.

Soku provides Jake with a cover story, but the CIA wants Jake out of it - they are planning to take out the Abu Karaf with the aid of the Thai army and don't want a civilian in the middle.

Jake is a spiritual man so he contacts his spiritual master PAITOON. As Jake is in trouble, Paitoon offers to arrange a divination from the oracle of the order.

Jake enlists the help of his old friend and partner SUNTI. Together they con LULU, the girlfriend of WU an arms dealer, to steal information leading to the Abu Karaf. Jake & Sunti follow the leads to a warehouse where they discover evidence of highly sophisticated weaponry. With the dangerous drug dealer Wu now after Lulu, Jake takes her under his wing.

Jake shares some of his info with Leon - still testing the waters. Can he trust the CIA agent? Another attempt is made on Jake's life - this time Jake is sure that Leon was involved. Finally, the Abu Karaf contact Jake to arrange a meeting - the pieces are coming together.

Jake gets his reading from the old oracle. The cryptic message confirm his fears - evil and demonic spiritual forces are working against him. Jantapan tries to send the spirit of an ancient warrior demon to kill Jake but the ceremony goes wrong and the spirit enters Jantapan himself giving him amazing physical and spiritual powers.

Jake and Sunti go to meet the leader of the Abu Karaf SUNGRIT - he confirms what Jake suspects - since 9/11 Jantapan has worked to corner the narcotics and arms market. It was Jantapan who kidnapped the girls, blaming the Abu Karaf so the army would wipe out his competition. Sungrit knows where the girls are and gives Jake plans and intelligence. They both need the girls alive. With more betrayal and action on the horizon, Jake must engage in a battle that will put both his physical and spiritual powers to the ultimate test as he takes on the demon Jantapan in a wild battle that can only end in death.

TD, I think your problem is you forget that Steven Seagal is human...He is a man...He feel emotions like anyone, he feels fear...When he is cut he bleeds like everyone else (these are his words...) He feel pain like anyone else...In fact I believe from what I know of him, that he is a very sensitive man, probably more sensitive than most individuals...I am the same way, so I have a bit of insight here...Him being rich, famous, or a movie star doesn't make him infallable, it doesn't mean he is bulletproof, and it does not mean he can't be hurt or killed...It must be hell trying to live your life in fear...Before the mafia thing I am sure he had no privacy and had some security issues, but now I am sure he has to watch his back at all times, that is nothing to make light of, I know I'd be worried...I think that his main concern is not himself at all, I think he fears for the safety of his family...Think of it, what would they do without him? I personally don;t believe this story...Because even I know that the mafia would probably have known where he was when he was there filming...This girl didn't even identify herself...We don't know either way...But I just don't think you should forget that he's a man...If he wasn't concerned then he wouldn't be very smart now would he? I don't fault him...I want him to be safe always because I care so much about him...I wish these threats and worries would just go away...We don't need to add to it by saying such harsh things about him...I agree with Casey I think he is brave and I admire that, but I don't envy him...Is it wrong that we have some compassion and concern in our hearts, TD? I don't think it is...I have all the feeling in the world for Steven and it's because he's a very special man...He is very human indeed, that's why I love him so...:) TD, all I want to know is what would you have him do? What if it was you? Put yourself in his place and think about it...

If you buy that little story, I've got a very large horizontal structure to sell you. :D

For starters, do you realize how much money it would cost to hire out entire floors of Sheratons and maintain that many bodyguards? and do you know how much Sensei is earning these days with his straight to video movies?

Gimme a break.

Well, his profligate spending has been remarked upon from time to time, so I didn't have any problem believing he'd rented out the whole floor of a hotel. He'd pretty much have to, with the retinue he's got. And, don't forget, this is Thailand. I doubt rates in a Sheraton in Thailand are going to be quite as much as one in New York.

I did, by the way, qualify my first comment on the subject. It's upstream a short way, if you care to have a look.

Jalu? I don't get it about the gum...
I guess I am tired too, TD...
But whatever Steven does or has, is strictly his business...
I just wish that I could be doing things riight along with him, that's all...

I wouldn't lie, or try to commit an illegal act to avoid doing something I had a responsibility to do. I wouldn't put my own safety and comfort first and leave my six children to fend for themselves. I would do the right thing, even at the expense of my own life, if it meant that others would be saved or protected from harm.

What's that quote, about evil thriving because good men do nothing? If more people stood up to the Mafia, they would no longer have any power, because no one would be giving it to them.

That's in a perfect world, of course.

But this is an imperfect world, and, as you say, Steven, like the rest of us, is only human, with very human frailties.

I've already mentioned elsewhere I've qualified my original statement with a follow-up response. My answer here is a response to the hypothetical question posed above.

I think I recall my friend who travels frequently to that part of the world telling us that chewing gum (or maybe it's kissing in public, I know it was something we consider fairly innocuous to do in public) is illegal in Singapore, but Thailand I'm not sure about.

Like TD said (Thank You) in Singapore it is illegal to chew gum in public places....I just wanted to know if it is illegal in Thailand also.

Look, the beauty of the internet is everyone's got a "story" and everone is anonymous. I've seen dozens of such "stories" about him (including some pretty gross ones) none of them are even remotely believable unless you're naturally a gullible person.

This one stinks to high heaven. First indicator is the spending- he does spend more than you or me, but that's just ridiculous Jacko level extravagance that is completely uncharacteristic of him. Not to mention the fact that he simply couldn't afford that kind of expense. You've got to remember, even in his peak fame he was never part of the $20 million per movie club, and he certainly isn't now. Factor in his court bills and a large family to take care of and properties to maintain etc and it doesn't make any sense whatsoever.

And don't get me started on all that stuff about how the bodygard supposedly knew the boyfriend...

(sigh)

Once more, I refer you my post upstream which I made in response to Mamasan.

Who gives a **** about that old story..He did testify and the bad guys are in jail and all of that is ancient history..
Nothing means more to Seagal than his kids and his family as he has stated many times..In fact he was more concerned about his family's secruity than his own during this whole mob fiasco..
Lets not just take anyone at their word on anything..

Storm

Smile dammit!
The whole story looks dodgy.Craig didn't say who it was so only he knows if the source is even remotely reliable. It was a brave thing to do to testify against the mob.No amount of bodyguards will save you from a sniper's bullet.
The man on screen and off are probably 2 different people altogether.

All I know is I adore him, and I don't believe half the things I have read, which isn't even that much to be honest, and some of the things that some folks don't agree with him doing just make him all the more interesting to me...
I think he lives his life as he sees fit, and I don't have a problem with anything that he's done...I think he's intelligent and interesting, and I admire him...
On screen image is probably something different from real life...
I love everything I know about you sensei, and I like you just as you are...:)

I am May from Bangkok. The story I told Mr. Craig is true. My ex-boyfreind website is edited at request. You can see for yourself that this law firm worked for Mr. Seagal in Thailand. I don't think Mr Seagal did anything wrong, they just talk about a plan. From what I see of Mr Seagal he respect Thai culture and law, I don't mean to you to think anything wrong of him. And my boyfriend told me he has a lot of respect for Mr. Seagal too especially as an athlete not just an actor. I am jst impressive with Mr Seagal not mean to hurt his reputation, this is why I wrote to Mr. Craig.

So, all those pictures in the gallery with him and his bodyguards, they're not really bodyguards, they're just grim looking men who just happened to be standing around him at the time the picture was taken? The same grim looking men in Poland as in New York as in Hong Kong? And the article from the artist in Poland that mentions both bodyguards and girls? Or this article at http://www.austinchronicle.com/issues/dispatch/2002-07-12/music_dancing.html (scroll down to "Mixed Notes").

Sorry - it's just that there's scepticism and then there's rose-coloured glasses.

-TD, vindicated, somewhat, still naive (I told you I was sticking to that story) and still bummed about her missing tape
