Believabillity and health concerns, that's why.
The characters he is supposed to portray in his movies will be portrayed more believable when he is about 50-100 pounds lighter and a bit more muscular.
F.e. his character in MC is supposed to be some ex-marine special forces dude and now trains private contractors. I think that when you look around in the 'real' world that type of persons are in way better shape then Seagal is at this point of life.
Don't get me wrong, I am happy with him still turning out movies (as long as they are better then AF, KS, OFAK and sorts). But he is turning into (unintentional I'm sure) a bit of a joke.
He had one part in which his physique was fitting the part he played, Pistol Whipped.
And besides there are several examples where he has put in an effort to lose weight and have a better physique for the movie.
EW is the best example, but there also some scenes in Ruslan/DTK in which he looks thinner then in the rest of the movie (carpark chase) and even The Keeper.
I'm a fan of Seagal and I have all his movies and have seen them all at least more then once, but I'm at a point where his screenappearance is starting to bug me and bring down the film.

I guess no one is really going to be happy about this bloody weight issue so lets all agree on one things at least ..he knows his stuff wether its movies, music...his police work... have to give him that ..

Maybe we can all just agree not to immediately bring up the weight or appearance when a new batch of photos appear, only because it reflects derogatory comments that surface everywhere else online. Don't get me wrong, I hope his health is okay, but he's not showing any signs of slowing down in work-load, so good for him. If things suddenly get quiet, projects start to get cancelled and so on, then bring it up..

I hope that some US-folks can tape the MMA Awards 2012 where Seagal presented an award. It will be on air on January 20th on Fox.
