In a bid to bring more recognition to the martial art form of Akido, the Durban Akido Club has borne the expense of flying one of the world's most accomplished students of Akido, Sensai Larry Renosa, from southern California to train their class of enthusiastic fighters in a four-day workshop.

A student under the ever-famous Steven Seagal, who is renowned not only for his Hollywood status but also for his 7th Dan in Akido, Sensai Reynolds emphasised that harmony and respect is what made Akido different.

Addressing a small audience at the seminar, jeers and cheers echoed as the Sensai tossed men much larger than himself in the air with uncanny ease.

"Akido is the way we manipulate energy, I simply channel the force you use against me back toward you," he said, adding that it is a very composed form of fighting.

He said that the art form not only teaches you respect and discipline, but opens your mind to the things that really matter.

The Durban club's sensai, Kevin Gounden, 29, a Second Grade Black Belt, was thrilled at the opportunity to meet an icon in Akido.

"His style is somewhat different to what we had been learning and our club can only grow from his wealth of knowledge," said Gounden.

The club, based at the Westville Civic Centre, has been in existence for five years. With 24 students, the club is managed and directed by Gounden and two other associates, Irshad Dawood, 33, and Zaahir Essa, 31, who are also avid students of Akido.

According to Gounden, the students are improving constantly and they all agree Akido is a lifestyle.

Thanks for the info Serena...what an privilege for those students of the workshop.....
You're welcome, Heather. :)

I really don't know anything about Sensei Larry Renosa, except the little bit I've seen mentioned here in connection with Steven. They did seem quite pleased to have him appear. :) And I did like the fact that they mentioned Steven's name in the article. :D
