Stop Canada's Cruel Seal Hunt Part 1

Dear Friends,

Here's something which is very close to my heart...very close indeed...and we should all do something to stop these massacres...

The 2006 Canadian seal hunt left more than 350,000 seals dead -- almost all of them were babies as young as 12 days.

This year, before the seal hunt had even begun, hundreds of thousands of baby seals had already died as a result of catastrophic ice loss. Despite this grim reality, the Canadian government insisted on allowing the hunt to continue, setting a crushing quota of 270,000 seals.

Stand with me today to stop the seal hunt forever by joining the Canadian seafood boycott. https://community.hsus.org/campaign/protectseals/

Seal hunting is an off-season activity for Canada's east coast commercial fishermen. They earn a small fraction of their incomes from selling seal skins to the fur industry: only a reported $17.5 million (Canadian) annually, compared to the nearly $3 billion taken in by the Canadian fishing industry from seafood exports to the United States. The connection between the commercial fishing industry and the seal hunt gives consumers all over the world the power to end the cruel slaughter of seals.

The Canadian fishing industry has suffered a $350 million (Canadian) decline in the value of snow crab exports to the United States.

Once you've signed the pledge, you'll be able to identify Canadian seafood by using HSUS's downloadable pocket guide. You can also find out which restaurants and other businesses have also signed the pledge--and which ones to contact to ask them to sign on.

Thanks for joining me in ending this cruel hunt.

Much energy to you all,

Stop Canada's Cruel Seal Hunt Part 2

Dear all,

An update and more links...

PROTEST Protest against Canada seal slaughter

Few have failed to see, and be disgusted by, the brutal images of seals being killed on the Canadian ice floes. Hundreds of thousands of these beautiful animals are brutally clubbed or shot each year; the 2003-2005 quota was set at 975,000 seals. Thousands of animals suffer terrible pain as they are killed for their fur and other body parts - a 2003 study commissioned by the Canadian Government claimed that 98% of all seals were killed in an acceptable, 'humane' way (although evidence that suggests this figure is most likely much higher) therefore meaning that 2% of the 975,000 quota - almost 20,000 animals - are not killed humanely and suffer a painful death.

Despite claims by the Government that a ban on the killing of while-coated seal pupshas reduced the amount of suffering and therefore has reduced public opposition to the cull, it is not so widely known that seal pups lose their distinctive white coats when they are only 12 - 14 days old, meaning that pups aged less than two weeks are legally allowed to be shot or clubbed to death by hunters.

Claims by government officials and fishermen that the seals are to blame for dwindling cod stocks are unfounded. Cod is a very small part of the harp seals diet and many now point to human over fishing as being the most likely cause.

The Canadian Government has ignored such research and its Fisheries and Oceans Department continue to promote the hunt as 'sustainable' and claim that the revenue generated by the sale of skins - around $16 million (Canadian) per year - accounts for a large part of rural fishermen's annual income, despite this being equal to an average of $1066 (Canadian) per hunter. Whilst the images of the hunt have undoubtedly harmed Canada's image for animal welfare, to stand any real prospect of stopping such atrocities in the future we must make the Canadian Government's Fisheries and Oceans Department aware of the huge worldwide opposition to the cull.

Please take the time to e-mail the Minister of the Fisheries and Oceans Department, the Honourable Loyola Hearn, letting her know that you are opposed to this mass-cull of Canadian wildlife and asking her to reconsider plans for a 2006 cull. You might like to let her know of the effect that the seal cull is having on Canadian tourism, and that you won't consider Canada as a travel desination until this persecution of wildlife for financial gain ends.

You are welcome to use the letter below as a template for your email but we suggest that you adapt and personalise your email as it is much more likely to be read, making our campaign more effective. It will only take a couple of minutes to 'personalise' and it really will make a difference. As always, we would be grateful to receive copies of any replies you receive. Thank you.

Dear Ms Hearn,

I am writing to you concerning the killing of seals on the Canadian ice floes.

The horrific images of the hunt have been shown extensively around the world and have seriously harmed Canada's image regarding animal welfare. I have no doubt that any continuation of this slaughter will affect the country financially through a loss of tourism and the sale of Canadian products.

For so long as the seal hunt continues, I for one will be left with no choice but to boycott Canada as a holiday destination and also to boycott Canadian products. I look forward to receiving your thoughts on this matter.

Yours sincerely

Aside from the whaling there is also the dolphin hunting that goes on every year as well. They use sounding sticks in the water to disrupt their sonar and round them into a small area, then injure a few of them...because dolphins will not leave a wounded family member. They are then taken from the water, and either placed on, or drug beind trucks to an area where their throats and blow holes are slit open with a machete...and left to suffocate and bleed to death. All for the sake of human appetite.

It's a harsh watch, but I highly recommend that people watch the film 'Earthlings' at least once in their lives. It is a definite eye opener to what really goes on with regards to animals serving humans. You can watch it HERE. It's long, over 90 minutes and can be stomach turning at times...but it's the truth of what goes on.

Sure, I respect your decision here my dear friend...BUT...if everyone will think the same then we won't be making any progress or have any success...
On stopthesealhunt.com, nearly 100,000 people have taken part and written to the Canadian government and I am also a member of other websites where 1000's of people have taken action and written to the Canadian government.
People are now staring to boycott the Canadian seafood industry and believe me that is hitting them big time in the pockets.
GOOD! Don't go to the red Lobster restaurant in the USA or ask them where they're getting their fish or seafood as an example.
These are little things everyone can do and that can have a huge impact on everything.
I am a winner and a fighter and I believe in people's power...
Sure, it requires a lot of work, dedication, passion and commitment but on a personal level I'll never ever give up that campaign because I love seals, This is very close to my heart,I detest cruelty against animals and I will stand up and be counted for these beautiful creatures and fight for them...Positive energy and belief in ourselves...
I agree also that sometimes you can bang your head on brickwalls when dealing with shaddy politicians and all these crooks...But if we keep putting pressure on them , challenging them, then it will be only one way...Victory !
Take care and much energy to you,

I watched 5 minutes and gave up and went to watch Back To The Future II.

Not that I don't love the cute seals or anything, but watching a two hour film on your PC just ain't the same as watching it from the comfort of your sofa on a 37" LCD.

Rock on!
