The Keeper - Reviews

Directing/Overall: This is a very well made film, its professional, slick, looks and sounds like a well budgeted movie and Waxman knows how to direct a film. The locales all look good and its very much in the vein of Pistol Whipped looks wise-in other words quality and no jarring quick stylish cuts or any of that nonsense

Story: Despite the somewhat generic storyline, its execution is not your typical Seagal fare, in fact it reminds me a lot of kidnap style movies in the 70's; its slow, builds character and makes sure everything happens for a reason; there's lot of characters and things going on but you never lose track of the main story-in terms of execution, at times it just doesnt feel like your formulaic Seagal flick (good or bad thing I dont know, up to you)

Fights and Action: The shoot out scenes, car chases are all compotently handled, a lot like the Pistol Whipped scenes, lots of explosions, good shootouts, no slow motion; there are quite a few of these sequences and they are nice and loud; will give you speakers a working out. Fights wise, this isnt the movie for your Seagal kicks, Driven to Kill fares much better. we do get some excellent quick Seagal moves (disabling of weapons etc) but anything in the way of extended randori or throwing people about is pretty much absent; we just get the usual quick arm locks and crunching bones- a few 1 on 1 fights are very sloppily shot and end up doing the usual paddy cake and kick routine, its very dissapointing; any doubles are very disreetly hidden so thats not a problem for those of who fussing over these things-in general, you may feel cheated that there's so little Seagal beatdown action

Seagal himself: His first few lines of dialogue are dubbed, in fact the first things he says are dubbed; its not too distracting and there are no stupid stunt double shots of people walking around or getting out of cars etc. His performance is decent; he smiles, he cracks jokes, he has a few decent one liners but nothing major; this again is not your typical Seagal performance; he has a nice old school stand off early in the film with your typical put downs and bitch slapping but later on you realise this easily could have been a role for Wesley Snipes or Lundgren or Van Damme; there's ntohing about this role tht is uniquely Seagal

Acting in general: Above average, no one really stands out, no Brits pretending to be US, everyone does their job, eagle eye viewers will catch some supporting cast members from Renegade Justice lurking around

Overall: This doesnt really feel like a Seagal flick and there's not too much in it to accomodate his style of things like say Pistol Whipped. It is a very well executed kidnap movie with great visuals, a strong story and above average action scenes. This is a well thought out and planned script probably not designed for the hardcore Seagal fan; its a movie anyone could get into and appreciate; those expecting a throwback to the glory days will be bitterly dissapointed, and if you want your Seagal in badass mode, consider rewatching Ruslan to get your fix, as good as it is, The Keeper may dissapoint you for not giving you enough of the 'good stuff'

Just watched THE KEEPER and was pleasantly surprised. Sure, it wasn't 'Out For Justice', but it was a lot better movie, than it's distributors give it credit for (can't believe they printed an earlier draft of the script on the back cover......don't the people at OPTIMUM have proof-readers for these things?)

THE PLOT
Anyhow, the story gets straight to the action, with Seagal as Roland Sallinger, a cop with 25 years on the force, partnered up with an over-ambitious (and greedy) bad apple cop. After a drug bust, Sallingers partner is keen to pocket the drug money. Sallinger (a good cop) hates this idea, and is promptly shot by his crooked partner (who then phones it in a gang-shooting)....Only thing is, Sallinger is rushed to the hospital, wounded, but not dead.
The crooked partner turns up at the hospital looking for Sallinger, who has a visit prior by a female collegue (and lifts her gun from her handbag, in order to defend himself) As the lady cop leaves the hospital, she realises her gun is gone, and races back to Sallingers ward. The crooked cop tries to suffocate Sallinger with a pillow, and is promptly shot with the gun Roland stole (never take a pillow to a gunfight, i say!)

Much time passes, and we witness Sallinger (banished from the police, due to injuries) taking medication, lifting weights, throwing knifes (we also get to see his many, many awards, medals and trophies, earned during the line of fire) We also notice a picture of him and a wealthy texan millionaire (but more on that later.....) As he mends his injuries, aided by his female collegue, the scene shifts to the glitzy night-life, of a wealthy young (Paris-Hilton- like) heiress (named Nikita) who's saddled with a playboy boxing womaniser (NOT a football player, as the cover states) who we know from the outset is rather crooked, as he flees the scene of an attempted kidnapping of the heiress.
Sallinger is slowly getting better, when a surprise phone call, from a millionaire friend, asking him to fly over and help him with a problem. Feeling better, Roland agrees, and is met in Mexico airport by a cop, who warns him from causing trouble, and reminding him that he's no longer a cop anymore. A mutual respect is brought about, and Sallinger and the cop, part ways. Driven to the Millionaires ranch, Roland also strikes up an off-beat friendship with the chauffeur, and is quick to help out en-route, defend the drivers sister against two gangster types. Sallinger kicks the s**t out of them, and finally meets up with his millionaire friend. He explains that his daughters life is in danger, and would Sallinger be her bodyguard? Roland agrees (but senses that his friend is not giving him all the 'intel') Sallinger has the security updated/modified/changed at the ranch, and puts his 'bone-breaking' skills to good use, on his first nights work (as he defends the Heiress, against two heavies at a bar) whilst Nikita's boyfriend is smooching with another girl in a back room.
Nikita feels safe with her new bodyguard, and she regains her confidence again. But unbeknown to her, her cheating boyfriend has been 'leant-on' by her earlier (would-be) kidnappers, and plans to assist them in her kidnapping, next time they are out alone.
Sallinger almost thwarts this kidnapping, but is arrested, after a crunching car-chase, and brutal shoot-out, leaving the kidnappers to get away with Nikita, and sending a ransom note to her wealthy father. I've gave away enough for you to guess that Sallinger, won't stop until he saves the girl, and kills the bad guys.......

THE ACTING

Seagal is fine (although some of his dialogue is quiet) but i didn't notice any dubbing (other than the opening scene....which was an overhead shot of a car) He drops a few 'F-Bombs' from time to time, and is basically a (soft-hearted) badass throughout. The supporting cast are capable enough (no big names) but efficent enough, to keep ones interest. The Chauffeur gives the best secondary performance (emoting a lot, just through his looks and gestures)

ACTION
Once again, i wasn't expecting UNDER SIEGE 2, but thankfully the movie had a fair few shoot-outs (about 3) a few fights (mostly a few quick moves) but brutal enough, and well spaced out (about 4) and a half decent car chase.

VERDICT
THE KEEPER was a good solid DTV movie. A lot better (and easier to understand, than say) KILLSWITCH or AGAINST THE DARK
And coming after DRIVEN TO KILL, it's fine as a companion piece to both URBAN JUSTICE and PISTOL WHIPPED. Fans of non-stop action, might feel a little short-changed (but luckily, this has a coherent plot to fall back on, and it's pace rarely sags) But fans of Seagal himself, will enjoy this modest thriller (especially if they enjoyed MAN ON FIRE?

My rating 8 out of 10

Here's a few screenshots from the film, i've tried to get the fight scenes (but they are pretty fast moving) but as you can see, its Seagal doing the business.
Will try put more up (took about 30)
WARNING these still may spoil the plot for people who haven't seen the movie yet?

My Review

I too have just finished watching The Keeper. Very unusual for me to watch a movie during the daytime, but i was looking forward to this film as the trailer was very promising.

First of all, the DVD box. As many have stated already they have not even got key plot details correct on the back. Very poor. The cover picture though is very well done, certainly better than the photoshopped head from other DTV efforts. The movie only cost £7.99 so decent value too. :)

Plot:
Simple, easy to follow and flows well. Probably the best plot for any of the DTV releases.

Action:
Car chase was much better than we have previously seen on the DTV releases. The fight sequences were generally short, but there were a few nice brutal ones similar to those in Urban Justice. Nice crunching noises too. A couple we got the swinging arms, legs, sequence! The shootouts were excellent too. Sound effects from the guns was spot on.

Stunt Double:
Not really visible if at all. There were a couple of scenes where we saw Steven Seagal's character from the rear that may have been the double, but very hard to tell.

Dubbing:
A little at the start for some reason, but after the first minute or so it was all Steven Seagal.

Cast:
Casting was great. Not any star names, but overall a very good job from all.

Overall:
This is amoungst the best DTV Steven Seagal releases and i thoroughly recommend it. It is on a par with Urban Justice and probably even Fire Down Below. It is well shot and directed. I am now looking forward to Dangerous Man, Lawman and Machete and his other future projects. Steven Seagal's career is hopefully on the way back up. 8/10

Questions:

Does the carchase have some crashing/exploding cars and carstunts?

How is the bad guy in this movie? Is it a real mean character who needs to be punished by Seagal?

How is the music in the movie. Does it sounds like a professional movie or is it just the typical dtv sounds?

Does the opening has some cool action? I mean does Seagal fights in here or is it just shooting?

Thanks for your review! Is the nice night-shot from the city on the DVD menu also to see in the movie? That's what I missed in the last movies.

Yes it has some crashing, but don't remember anything exploding. Lots of gunfire between the vehicles. Not really any stunts, such as jumps, but fast driving.

Quite a few bad guys, and yes they all get punished.

How is the music in the movie. Does it sounds like a professional movie or is it just the typical dtv sounds?

Music was pretty good, quite quiet though. The sound of the action was excellent. Gun shots, breaking limbs, etc.

Does the opening has some cool action? I mean does Seagal fights in here or is it just shooting?

Don't want to give away too much, but the opening title sequence is a very well shot night time view of the city. See the first sceen shot i posted above. Nice action in it.

See above.
