Mark Dacascos Martial Arts Bio.

Al Dacascos was Mark's first Sifu (martial arts teacher). Moriko McVey, Mark's natural mother, was also one of Al Dacascos' students.

Malia Bernal, Mark's "second mother," became Mark's second Sifu. She was one of the top ten competitors in the United States, and for five years was rated as the Number One female competitor in weapons, fighting and forms. She was also the first female to grace the cover of "Black Belt" magazine.

Sifu Al went on to become the originator and founder of his own style of martial arts, which is now known as WUN HOP KUEN DO, which has Chinese and Filipino influences. It's a combination fist-arts style that derives from KAJUKENBO (KArate, JUdo Jujitsu, KENpo, and Chinese & Western BOxing), which was developed in Hawaii. You can sign up for classes with Al Dacascos if you're in the Portland, Oregon area:

Mark was literally born into martial arts, specifically the discipline of Wun Hop Kuen Do Kung Fu. However, while winning his first international tournament at the age of only nine, even genetics could not yet determine just how much he would eventually excel.

At 17, Mark traveled to Taiwan, to study with his third Sifu, Muo-Hui Shen. Muo-Hui Shen then taught Chin-Na and Shui Jiao (Chinese Judo), which is where one uses the opponent's clothing to "wrap" the person, thus disabling him/her.

As he'd done throughout his childhood, Mark went on to demonstrate martial arts and compete in tournaments, early on developing an obvious affinity for performing.

Mark is also a student of Professor Jiang Hao-Quan, who teaches various Shao-Lin styles, as well as Chin Na, Shui Jao, and Tai Chi.

He's been a Capoeira student of Amen Santo's, who played his teacher in the movie, "Only the Strong."

The January 1999 issue of "Inside Kung Fu" features Mark on its cover. In the November 1998 issue of "Men's Fitness," there is not only a cover photo of Mark, but a whole section on him.

Martial arts has... "always been a part of my life, and I'll work hard to keep it that way. There have been times when I've hardly trained. There have been a few times when I've needed to take a break and practice other things. But if I'm honest with myself, there's never been a time that I've thought that I'd stop altogether. I was blessed with having three parents, two of whom are, in my humble opinion, amazing martial artists (Al Dacascos and Malia Bernal). I'd like to someday teach and share some of the things they taught and shared with me. Having been their student, and thus learning about hard work and dedication at an early age, really helped prepare me for my life as an actor. The mental and spiritual aspects have helped me as much as the physical training. Actually, I think they've been more important. Thanks, Mom and Pop!"

trailer for The Nomad..

The trailer for the upcoming Mark Dacascos & Jason Scott Lee film The Nomad is online. It looks terrible but nonetheless, here it is Trailer.. You only see a quick glimse of Dacascos if you blink even once you'll miss it. Even if you dont blink there is an 90 % chance that you will miss it anyway. :D Theres allso an image of him when they introduce the cast that is the only clear image of him.

Dacascos has made a few good movies.. but he has been slaking of alot lately, he should be focusing what he is good at .. Kung Fu ..

'Drive' is an awesome film. I really like Dacascos and he has a lot of talent as a martial artist. His fight sequences in Brotherhood Of The Wolf were some of the best I've seen for a while.

I'm a fan of Marc Dacascos as well though, he hasn't made too many movies that I have liked. It's a shame because he really could do quite a bit. I'd like to beat the people up that made Cradle 2 la Grave and put Jet Li and Marc Dacascos in another movie but this one will have a well written script and a good director.

News!

"Nomad" recently completed principal photography and has now moved on to post-production. The producers of "Nomad" intend to premiere the film at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival.

Prepare to set your TiVos for the Food Network, as Mark will be returning to the set of Iron Chef America for ten all-new episodes, the first of which debuts Sunday, January 16 at 9PM. Allez Cuisine!

Keep an eye open for the January 2005 issue of "Filipinas" magazine. If you squint carefully at the cover you'll likely miss the large photo of Mark adorning it.

Mark has recently begun work on the new film, "Only the Brave." The movie tells the story of the 100th Battalion and 442nd Regimental Combat Team during WWII. This regiment is one of the most highly decorated of its size in all of US Military history. Most amazing is that these soldiers were of Japanese ancestry. What complicated matters further is that while these men were fighting the Germans in Italy and France, much of their families back in America were being held captive in internment camps. "Only the Brave" is written, directed and starred in by Hawaiian-born, award-winning filmmaker Lane Nishikawa. The film also stars Jason Scott Lee, Yuji Okamuta, George Takei, Tamlyn Tomita, and Mark. It is executive produced by Nishikawa and Eric Hayashi, produced by Karen Criswell and Jay Koiwai. The director of photography is Michael Wojciechoski who was also the DP on "Drive." Stay tuned for more news about Mark's newest production.

Mark's Magazine Covers page has been updated. Take a look at his latest cover-stories in the Martial Artist Photo Gallery.

Take a look at the new page for "The Nomad" for several never-before-seen photos of Mark in character. Things are really rolling now, so keep checking back for more photos and updates.

Keep an eye out for "Iron Chef America: Battle of the Masters," debuting on Food Network, April 23-25. Sharp, or even not-so-sharp eyes, will catch an appearance by Mark in a rather unusual capacity. Other guests will include Wolfgang Puck, Mario Batali, Bobby Flay, Iron Chef Sakai, and Iron Chef Morimoto. All in all it sounds like an event not to be missed.

Fans of Mark and Christophe Gans may be disappointed to learn that their long-in-planning film, The Adventurer, has been shelved after Christophe's parting of ways with rights-owning French studio, Canal Plus. Hope of the two teaming up for another film is far from lost, though, as Christophe will be launching pre-production this summer on "Rahan," based on the French comic book by the same name. Rahan is France's best-selling comic book to date, enjoying great success since its debut in the late '60s. Written and directed by Christophe Gans, the movie tells the story of Rahan (played by you-know-who), and was described by Mark, in a nutshell, as "a prehistoric love story." Filming is currently scheduled for the beginning of '05.

Mark Dacascos fans, old and new, will be especially excited about this next bit of news once again relating to Mark and Christophe: Their 1995 cult-fan-obsessed film, "Crying Freeman," is finally seeing a stateside theatrical release this August by way of Universal Focus (responsible for the U.S. release of "Brotherhood of the Wolf"). For the handful of Mark fans not familiar with the film, "Crying Freeman" tells the story of a Japanese potter who is unwillingly recruited by a Chinese mafia to become their number one hitman, code-named: The Freeman. The film stars, among others, Julie Condra, Tchéky Karyo, Mako, Masaya Kato, Yôko Shimada, along with, of course, Mark Dacascos. Whatever you do, don't miss your opportunity to see this breathtaking film upon its much-demanded U.S. release.

Mark should be making his final return to Kazakhstan to finish up the rest of his filming for "The Nomad." Check back soon for more information on this film, as well as photographs.

Mark Dacascos is currently in Kazakhstan, working on the new motion picture, "The Nomad." He is co-starring alongside Jay Hernandez and Jason Scott Lee. The film is directed by Ivan Passer, written and produced by Rustam Ibragimbekov, and also produced by Milos Forman, Ram Bergman, and Pavel Douvidzon. Filming starts this month and is expected to finish up in December. Check back for further details.

Mark will be co-starring in one of NBC's "one-minute movies" in mid-September. These ultra-short films will be broken up into even shorter segments throughout entire evenings of NBC line-ups, scattered randomly through commercial breaks. So make sure you stay tuned to NBC this fall, and only take bathroom breaks during the actual show!

Smile dammit!
Dacoscos has a lot of talent. I expected him to do better in movies, but he remains one of the best to watch performing.

And in The Base he had a great fight with another soldier. Drive,is still one of the most dazzling of his talents, yet i saw him in one trying to save the world by a nuclear bomb going off (!!) and no fighting at all? I forget the name, but anyway he seems a good guy to me.

Storm - that would be Armageddon.

Drive is fantastic, I agree. Crying Freeman is good too, but a little strange.

Drive is a superb movie. Have you listened to the region 2 disc's commentary? It is hillarious.

I also like 'Only The Strong'. It was a good movie too. Yes 'Crying Freeman' was strange. :D

I've never listened to the commentary, dude. I might watch the movie tomorrow with the commentary on. Do you have 'Only The Strong'? I haven't seen this movie, but have heard it is awesome. I might try and buy it on eBay or something, as you can't get it in stores anymore. Same with 'The Base'.

Yes i've got 'Only The Strong' on VHS. Bought it ex-rental years ago.

I see you can pick up both on region 1 from Play USA. Very cheap too. :) Might be time to upgrade.

Has anyone seen the latest Mark Dacascos movie 'The Hunt For Eagle One'. It is one of the worst movies i've seen this year. The action is constant, but it is very repetative. It is just one constant battle. If you enjoyed the battle at the start of Mercenary For Justice it is pretty much the same quality, but lasts 90 minutes.
