Trained in Aikido last night

I trained in aikido last night at the nearby dojo. I had fun and got a workout too. All the students there seem really nice. The classes are even offered 6 days a week and for one monthly price you get unlimited sessions. I'm going to check it out two more times before I put money on the table. I think this is something I can do and look forward to. I think this is something I can do until the next girl comes along. I hope this is something that can make me happy. I'm tired of feeling depressed all the time. One thing is that the training really makes you sweat and out of breath so I'd have to definately quit smoking to do it. Which is a good thing because I really didn't want to start again. It sucks that I'm in the position I'm in but I think that I can train again and that this is one good thing that comes out of being single. Anyway, I have one final today and then I'm done college for the semester. Guess that would be a good thing but now my days are just going to be longer. I'll keep you all posted on my training and about the school.

It´s so fantastic that you have trainned aikid. You´ll fell more spiritual and bad things just go away, it´s almost a life philosophy. Keep trainning zen.

I will keep you posted. This could be a really good thing. One thing that has me feeling "iffy" is that the dojo seems to be student owned. It seems good that there are different black belts teaching the classes on different days but it doesn't really sound stable. Guess I'll see because chances are I'm going for it. I need a reason to get up in the morning.

If you're a little worried about it being taught by students, ZenLateralus, maybe you could consider checking out other dojos in your area?

Whichever one you decide on, it sounds like an excellent step ahead for you. :) Good luck and enjoy yourself. I hope it helps you find some peace of mind, among all the possible benefits.

That's great that you've taken up aikido, Zenlaterus!

As for students teaching the classes, even my 5th dan Sensei still considers herself a student. She teaches two classes per week, and the other classes are taught by various levels of black belt from 1st dan to 3rd dan. The advantage of having a number of different teachers is that each teacher brings their own experience to teaching the techniques, so you get to learn in a variety of ways.

Five and a half months for me and I'm still learning how to breathe.... but it's good that it's giving you incentive to stop smoking. at least.

And here's a story - my dojo's sensei is 60 years old, and she met her current husband in aikido class, some years ago. So you never know what might happen....

Zen, I am very happy you are taking steps to regain control of your life and emotions!
I am glad you have taken up aikido, even tho I know nothing about it but what I read here! I think it will teach you self worth, discipline and motivate you to go out there and have the nice peaceful life you deserve! Stick with it, the other seems to be saying that the instructors still consider themselves students it must be a constant learning experience! I am proud of you rather it matters to you or not it does to me!

I started Aikido 6 months after a very painful break-up which sent me spiraling into depression. Aikido does help and it can make you happy, at least, part of the time. To me it worked as a sort of a reminder because when I returned from an Aikido class I always felt "normal/happy" as opposed to depressed.

However relying on someone outside of yourself to make you feel happy is never going to work for long. A girl cannot make you happy, you can.
Actually I think the word "happy" is inaccurate. "Content" is the right word.

Recently I had a brief but intimate relationship with a girl. After we both decided it couldn't go on, I was sad for a few days but I got it out of my system. Girls may come and go, Aikido is always there for you.

I appreciate your sharing of your philosophies and your comments. I may be able to get to a point where I can make myself happy. Sure, maybe I can be happy to not really have friends outside school and work and maybe I can be happy not having a girlfriend and a possible family to look forward to. What bothers me is the damned loneliness that ensues.

You may find friends in the dojo. If not friends, then "buddies" at least. Any sort of human interaction helps, as opposed to being locked inside your own mind.

Well, it's been a while since I've gone to aikido. I'm thinking about going tonight. I don't know what they'll think of me not being there for 2 weeks though. I've just been having problems with motivation and my work schedule keeps changing. What's worse is that I have this whole week off work for vacation and it turns out to be a bad idea to do that. It only reminds me of how boring and lonely my life is. Anyway, if I don't go to aikido today I'm sure I'll go someday this week or start going next week when I back at work.

Don't be concerned with what THEY think. This is America, not Japan. You're not a live-in student. This is pure capitalism. You pay money for your Sensei's time. This gives you the right to come when you wish. The moment you start concerning yourself with what "they" think, you're going a downhill road of making excuses for yourself not to go.

And if you don't want to go, thats fine. You're not forced. But you have to give yourself a clear answer - in your heart, are you really interested, or did you realize its not for you ? If its the case of the latter, you should stop feeling guilty and making excuses and instead find another activity that you're aligned with more.

Does your dojo have classes at different times? Is it possible to go to a morning class if you have to work in the afternoons? Is there one class a week you can go to for sure, like on a Saturday morning?

I find that sticking to a schedule works best for me. Otherwise, I'd have lapsed a long time ago... (and which is why, even though I feel like I need a break, I won't take one because once I stop going, I'll stop going forever).
